The delayed refund check mail
I’ve been waiting for a refund check from my university for about a month now. I was told last month that I would get it by the middle of June. When I didn’t get anything in the mail for 2 weeks, I contacted the refunds department and was told that the check hadn’t been mailed yet because of the end of the fiscal year. I was told to wait another week. I waited for almost two weeks after that, checking every piece of mail as if it was my only purpose in life. I went to the refunds office again afterwards to see what was going on. After checking on the computer for about 10 minutes, the front desk staff at the office told me that the refund check would be mailed on Friday, which was last Friday. I was told to wait another week for the check.
The University is less than two miles from my home, so I assumed that I would get the check in the mail within 3 to 4 days. While there are instances when mail sent from one part of the state to another is delayed, the United States Postal Service (USPS) claims that it usually takes them about 3 business days to deliver any mail within the same city, sometimes sooner. Today marks another week already, and I still have no check. I called the refunds office early this morning to let them know that I was getting really old waiting for this refund. The lady over the phone responded by saying “sometimes the mail takes a long time to get to its destination.” I asked her if the check was being mailed from the University or from Alaska.
She laughed with me and said that she would check to see why it was taking so long and asked me to call her back on Monday if I still hadn’t received the check by then. She could then cancel the previous check and issue me a new one. I personally don’t want to use that option, as that would mean having to go through all the hoops again just to get them to mail me the new check. I’m hoping the check arrives tomorrow, even though I forgot to ask if the check was sent through postal mail or via a mule. That might be the reason it’s taking so long.
Have you ever faced something similar? Have you ever waited for a long time for a refund from any business? How about waiting for some mail for a long time? As for me, I’m keeping an eye out for any mule that walks by my house.

Wow…dejavu….^_^ I’ve been waiting for 2 months now for my refund check from school also! It’s a fairly small college, so it’s unimaginable as to why they have to mail out checks…but alas, they did….and now I’m waiting on a $400 check that needs to be signed, and sent back to the loan company for my original reimbursement. Gahhh…I get so frustrated over the fact that they couldn’t have just credited the overpayment back to the bank! But then again, they’re not worried about the interest that accrues. XP

Wow, sorry to hear about the refund check!!
Hehe, I actually think that if something is sent in the mail within the same city, you’ll get it the next day. Or that’s how it was back then… Hehe. I don’t send anything in the mail anymore. Hehe.
Anyways, yeah, I do hate how long you have to wait for something, though! I hope you’ll get the check sometime soon!!

heh, true! They’ll never be late when collecting money, but giving it back takes a whole process that makes sure they keep money as long as possible. It’s as if you’re committing a crime by asking for your money back.

Wow, 2 months is long too. Hmm, that’s frustrating, yes. They can also just give a refund via cash, by saying “Ok, it will be ready in 2 weeks or a week”, since it takes them less than a week to see if a refund is valid or not, and then the rest of the 2 months are spent simply creating the check, as if they go and find a good tree to cut down and convert into a check.

Yes, one would think that, wouldn’t they? I also think if it’s within the same city it should arrive within a day or two.
I got it! Will post an update soon.
