Canada’s Bait Car Program, the heat and the layout, and sushi

Posted in General by Bes on Jul 24, 2005

I found the “Bait Car Program” very interesting in the sense that each suspect is arrested with the help of around 22 specialized cops who use a car as a bait, set it up to be stolen in an area where car theft is high, and then arrest the suspects. The idea is simple; put hidden cameras on a car that can record video and audio, and have the car tracked by a GPS system that alerts an operator of the speed, location and other details of the car. The operator coordinates all the details to officers who slowly, and surely, follow the suspect. When they are in a good position, they let the operator know, and the operator turns off the engine of the car with the “click of a mouse button.”

Every officer is armed while making the arrest. While the use of such a force on a single suspect [or at times, 2 suspects] may seem to be “overboard”, the site says that many times the suspects are armed and dangerous. It’s good to know that technology is being used to lure in the suspects. Opponents of such a system may argue philosophically that leaving a car out in the open actually “attracts” the attention of those who previously had no intention of stealing. Thus, giving someone the tools to do something intentionally and making it look like the outcome is going to be good for that person may actually tend to make that person perform that action, even if the person may not have had any interest in that action before the opportunity was around. Doing something like this intentionally and then labeling the person who responds to such a bait a “criminal” may lead some people to argue about the ethics of such a program, though I am sure that in this age and era such people are a very few compared to the majority. The program does seem to be working, though, since almost every “bait” episode seems to result in an arrest, thus eliminating another chance of having a real car stolen. People are feeling the heat, as many of the people in the videos available on the Bait Car Program site actually say in the recorded video that they hope the car they just stole isn’t a bait, indicating that they are very well aware of the police initiative and are still willing to take the risk.

Speaking of heat, and coming back to the U.S., it’s considered the middle of summer, and July is about to end. We had a long winter, and are having a very hot summer [imagine having a cold summer]. I had always thought that the previous colors for the site were very nice. The site now has a new title “The Penguin Chronicles” and a meme that is the same as before, with different colors and a different “look.”

Since we are still on the topic of heat, have you every noticed the “affection” level of friends around you, during the summer? Even though it’s biological because of the heat, it’s still interesting to see how people either care more about relationships during the summer, or try to ignore it. They will start missing people all of a sudden, and they will start ditching people all of a sudden too. How many relationship issues, involving yourself and your friends, do you hear about in the summer, and how many do you hear about during the winter? It’s interesting to find out. Imagine hearing someone “rant” about their relationship online, and then when you wish to inquire more about it by asking even a single question, they tell you to forget about it. How can you forget about it when they told you about it in the first place? Why start a topic when you aren’t willing to let the other person be interested in what you’re saying?

On a different note, the top 2 key phrases used in search engines last week to come here were “Sushi” and “Sbc rewards.” I haven’t had sushi for a long time, and penguins love fish.

  1. Ally :

The other think I find wierd is that if one couple break up, or start having obvious issues with each other, it seems to have a knock-on effect and make other people around them re-evaluate their own relationshipsl.

Just like ice fishing only better and a bit more dangerous! :)

Yes, it spreads like the flu, and everyone starts examining their own situation and comparing: "He/she does it for her/him too, why don’t you do it for me?? You don’t care?!"
