Thought: does the monetary price set the value of an ambition?07.13.08

This thought has been on my mind forever I guess. It keeps coming back up again in the main spotlight whenever I do different things where the value of something can be considered in terms of cash or resell value. The thought revolves around the idea as to whether or not the actual value or purpose of an ambition depends on the monetary cash price or value of any tool or tools being used to help with that ambition. This could range from cameras in taking pictures, to cars in giving rides, to gifts in giving things to someone, to tools in helping you make websites, and more. For me such a value does not exist, but it seems to exist within many people and almost everywhere in the society.

Examples of monetary values & perception: Camera & Software

To explain this stereotypical trend a bit more, following are two examples from the offline and the online world:

Example 1: Richer cameras produce richer emotions

  1. Open source refers to the concept of allowing anyone to look at the code of a software or the details of a plan without hiding it. Open source advocates cite the benefits of such a concept in order to promote its use: more exposure means more people participating and improving a product, and supposedly less monopolistic control over something. I, however, also cite the downsides of such a concept while also citing the benefits of such a concept. Maybe I should go after the downsides of Open Source in another article? []
  2. FTP = File Transfer Protocol. Ftp programs allow users to connect to different servers/computers, and to either upload or download or organize files on those servers/computers. An example of a free FTP software is FileZilla, while an example of a paid FTP software is WS_FTP. []
  3. This website :) []

Thought: On setting achievable goals being a bad concept06.29.08

Around December or January of every year, I notice many people talking about the goals1 they wish to accomplish for the coming year or the goals they wanted to accomplish for the ending year. Many people set goals that are good for their health, like losing weight, or exercising to remain slim. Many other people set financial goals, like earning money, earning more money, or paying off debt. Still, many other people have different kinds of goals that they try to coordinate around the concept of a 365-days goal period.

One thing I would like to propose to you is to start thinking of setting up goals, instead of planning to set up achievable goals. Your goals can be sorted out in ways other than the achievable and non-achievable category. You can look at a goal and think “Can this goal be pursued easily using the exact tools, resources and character that I have at my disposal at this very moment?” That way, goals which can be achieved easily can also exist along side the goals which cannot be achieved easily. Thus, your goals will exist based on what you want your goals to be and the difficulty level of their completion or progress, instead of your goals existing based on whether or not you think they can be achieved.

5 reasons setting achievable goals is a bad stereotypical trend

  1. No, not soccer goals. Soccer goals and saving soccer goals help you in different ways, like making you stop the goal and start the pain. []
  2. The Challenge Facer!!“ []
  3. I myself have talked about goals planning before, but I have also noticed that I have rarely, or ever, explicitly expressed the details of my yearly plans in public. There is a reason for that: I do not end up having goals based on a year. Instead, I have goals for life, both short term to long term, which keep changing or modifying or updating dynamically every moment of the day, or whenever I think about them or whenever I do something about them, when it comes to realizing as to how or what can be done for me to change to get that goal or to get similar results as the goal in mind. My goals rarely change in terms of being eliminated - a few new goals keep getting added from time to time, while many goals have been with me since childhood. Without goals or efforts towards goals, which are in my view the desire and the actual action to experience an idea or a concept or a dream, life can be very robotic or extremely unsatisfying for me. []
  4. I stand against the idea of doing something because the society does it. Think emotionally, think rationally, think from scratch, and decide what you want to do: that is what I tell myself all the time. []

Bad trends that hurt relationships - Part 1 - 1-sided responsibility, no appreciation, & no focus06.21.08

I would like you to please do something for me at this very moment: please take a few moments to look at yourself in a mirror or a puddle of water [maybe mud if you abuse relationships], or simply try to feel or imagine what you may look like. Whatever you are, you are the result of some form of a relationship. Whether it was a relationship based on 20 years of trust or 20 minutes of alcohol or genetic research in a secret lab hidden from anti-clone people, you are the result of some form of a relationship. You yourself may have so far encountered relationships of many kinds every single day, or from time to time. This article is the beginning of a series that focuses on harmful relationship trends which may seem unrelated, but are in reality the main causes of many things that make some or all participants of such relationships unhappy.

Having gone through some strong personal relationships of all kinds myself that ended in a lot of teddy bears being crushed by cars and a bicycle, I have had this idea for many years ago to write some of the things you are about to read. It was not until a few days ago that I thought of writing this post after talking to someone online who seems to have gone through some similar things also. I would like to introduce you to this relationship series, where I will talk about several different trends that can result in unhappiness and even mental or physical abuse for some of the participants.

Trends dictating relationships, instead of relationships dictating trends

  1. Yes! a woman coming before the man and the man being the follower! Ohh the horror for the typical male in you, right??!! []
  2. Why do you think I am writing this series? :) []
  3. Each and every country on this planet is still more favorable to men than women []
  4. Sex is not love, by the way, in case you are one of the majority that thinks love means being sexual. I will talk about sexual intimacy in the next part of this series. []
  5. Being able to go to the grocery on your own does not mean you have control over your life. []
  6. Because guys realize saying this will numb the smartness of the girl and create a sexual situation later []
  7. Such relationships exist and are extremely important for such people, by the way []
  8. Sexual concepts in a relationship will be discussed next time []
  9. Relax, calm down, I am holding off talking about the topic of sex and sexual relations in relationships, and how people think sex equals to a good relationship, until the next part of the series as it will take a lot of attention and requires a whole set of writing of its own []
  10. Do not run around screaming “I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO AVOID THE UNHAPPINESS CAUSED BY MY HUSBAND NOT THANKING ME FOR WHAT I DO” unless you want him to find out through other people who do not believe in secrets but only in sharing of all vital information with everyone. []

The Moocher’s Guide To Riding In Bes’s Car - Part 306.01.08

As of today, the following things in my car need some form of fixing: passenger door side panel, roof bumps, internal electric discharge, seat belts, actual messy texture of the seat cloth in some areas, a bit lose gas tank chamber. All of these things were working perfectly about 2 years ago. While there are some more issues with the car, all of the above listed issues exist solely because of the passengers in my car who got a ride from me: these passengers simply experimented or acted carelessly. Because of them, my car is suffering a bit. The car runs fine, but I know the problems it has, and majority of the problems exist due to careless and selfish riders.

The total amount of money to fix these issues will be at least around $2100 as of today. Are those passengers going to team up and chip in some money to come up with the total cost? Are those passengers going to chip in their share of the cost? Are any of those passengers going to chip in even $1 as of today? No. Many passengers do not even remember anymore they did anything wrong to or in my car.

So far, I have given you 14 things people do or have done in my car, in the form of Part 1 and Part 2 of this series. Today I would like to present to you 7 more things that people have done in my car in the past, things that you should avoid when in other people’s cars.

Part 3 - Seven things for non-friends to avoid while getting a car ride from me

Staff & obligations shortage at shipping companies05.24.08

Someone sent me a package last Friday using the FedEx overnight delivery option, meaning the package was supposed to arrive before noon on Saturday. Saturday came and went, and so did Sunday: no package or any FedEx delivery person came. There was no update of any kind in the online tracking system either. Monday afternoon, I had the sender’s secretary call FedEx to find out where the package was. FedEx told her that the reason for the delay was “a shortage in staff these weeks” in my area. They promised the delivery would happen on Tuesday.

The package did come on Tuesday, though the late delivery changed a lot of my plans. Even though I did not pay for the shipping, both the sender and the receiver were hurt by this situation. The late arrival of the package and the reaction of FedEx caused me to think about the obligations of shipping companies in such situations.

Question: Do you read other people’s junk mail?04.30.08

Many people around the world receive postal mail that does not belong to them. Such mail includes letters from loved ones, post cards, billing statements and more. Many times, the mail comes in the name of some person who used to get mails at some address before, but does not live or have that address anymore. You yourself may have probably gotten someone else’s mail by now. Usually, many people either throw such mail away, or they return it to the post office. Still, many other people open such letters and packages to see what is inside1.

I wonder now as to whether you treat junk mail in a similar fashion as non-junk mail that is addressed to other people. Since junk mail is not necessarily requested by the receiver, does that result in you reading other people’s junk mail?

Is unwanted junk mail the private property of other people?

  1. The ethics of whether or not to read other people’s mail that comes to you will be discussed soon []
  2. Junk mail is usually advertisement or similar mail that is sent to you without you inquiring about it. It includes coupons, special discounts, announcement of new stores or products, and many more things. For example, if I get 1 piece of real letter like a bill, which can be considered junk mail by many people, I will get about a pound or more worth of junk mail which will include flyers for new fitness stores, coupons for restaurants, specials on oil and tire change, discounts on eye surgeries, and more. Bes Z’s Poor Practical Guide to Surviving Without Much Money - Part 1 - Electricity Usage04.24.08

Today I would like to start offering some dedicated tips and suggestions for the poor on how to change life habits so that money can be saved. The first part in this series will focus on your electricity usage. This guide applies to many individuals on this planet who have to pay for electricity usage at the house. Also, for every dollar that I list below, simply assume a similar unit for your own current currency in your region of the world.

What does being poor mean in this series?

  1. Avoid playing with the meter or trying to open it if it is not open. Electric companies charge a heavy fine and sometimes pursue police records for anyone who tampers with these meters. []
  2. Keep the fish tank water motor running however; you do not need to torture fish to save more money. Otherwise, you can sell the fish tank and the fish or give them away to someone who can take care of them. []
  3. The mp3 players and other electronics better be necessities and not just for fun. Otherwise, you can get cheaper alternatives and sell the mp3 players and other electronics. []
  4. If you find the link to that article, please let me know. I found a link to that article while reading Lifehacker, by the way. []
  5. Simply asking photo labs in different areas will not hurt: “I was wondering if it would be possible for me to please get the batteries from the disposable cameras that you throw away. I only need the batteries and cannot afford them, and I would be very grateful if you could give me some batteries from time to time or even just once.” Worst come to worst, they will say “NO” with a weird face and you can walk out with a weirded smiling face if you wish. If you can find even a single store that is willing to give you such batteries every 2 to 3 weeks, or even every month or two, you may never have to buy those AA-sized batteries for many months or years to come. []
  6. See if you can exercise in places where people will not freak out if they notice you exercising. A lot of people in this world get easily spooked if they see someone doing something different. Unfortunately, a lot of criminals also do different things, so doing different things results in you being assumed to be a criminal at first. For example, exercising in a family neighborhood in the parking lot in the middle of the night, while someone notices you, may result in the police coming over and asking you why you chose that time frame to exercise and that neighborhood. Sure, there is nothing wrong with exercising in that exact manner and at that time, but remember: doing things differently on this planet does not mean everyone will understand you. You have a lot of barriers to break. This will be a topic for another article very soon. []

Thought: The Wrong Number Dilemma04.14.08

I have been getting a lot of wrong number calls lately, asking me for different people. A few hours ago I got a call from a Berkeley phone number (510), asking me “Can I speak with Marilyn?” I know of no other person named Marilyn that wants to share my number, so I said “Sorry you have the wrong number“, to which the lady said “Oh ok” and hung up. That got me thinking about the way the call was handled by both parties. It could have been handled better, so that we could both realize The Wrong Number Dilemma.

Realizing the reason of the entire phone call and understanding it a bit more, even if that results in more mystery, is better than not thinking about the reasons or the situation at all. It is time to think a bit more about a situation which many consider to be nonexistent.
