If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Question: what daily activities would you skip for blogging?

Posted in Online by Bes on May 11, 2007

This should be a simple and fun exercise if you think blogging is an integral part of your life. How important do you consider blogging when comparing it to daily activities in your life?

If you had 10 minutes before you had to leave your house to do something, and had a choice to either blog about something important, or do one of the following 10 things, which one would you do? Which ones would you be willing or not willing to to give up, and why?

Which of the following 10 things would you skip to blog about something important instead?

  1. Brushing teeth
  2. Eating breakfast
  3. Doing laundry [if you skip this today to blog instead, imagine you have to wait a week before doing laundry again]
  4. Finding out the latest news [Reading a newspaper, watching news online or on tv, or listening to the news via radio]
  5. Exercising in the morning
  6. Showering
  7. Spending time, romantic and non-romantic, with your significant other
  8. Combing hair
  9. Cleaning the house - considering the fact that if you do not clean right away, there might be ants or insects by the time you get back home
  10. Taking a 10 minute nap, considering the fact that you are not feeling well because of not having enough sleep for days

What would you give up for blogging, and what would you not give up for blogging? Please let me know, thank you. :)

Ronald helped me with the above list. Thanks Ronald.

  1. Ronalfy :

    INSTEAD of blogging huh?

I’d rather be at a movie or watching a cool band at a club in a non-smoking environment.

I eat breakfast while reading feeds, and the same with brushing teeth.

I think if it were something really important, I would give up combing my hair and cleaning the house for blogging.

  2. Bes :

Ronalfy, yes, instead of blogging. I like watching movies also, so I would also be at a movie theatre instead of blogging sometimes, or maybe all the time.

You read feeds while brushing teeth? I would like to try that out, having a screen built into a mirror so I can brush teeth and browse automated browsing feeds, something that might even read out the feeds to me. So when it would say “Next feed: Ronalfy.com” I can say “SKIP! No, delete! delete!“. :)

Giving up combing hair and not cleaning the house, hmmm. That is what hats and cats are for, right? :p

  3. Klearchos :

I am not sleeping more than 4-5 hours per day… Does that say anything? lol

  4. Simply Precious :

Hmm… I would skip brushing my teeth, combing hair, showering, and eating breakfast(I would do those after I blog). Hahah, that’s what I’m doing now… Hahah… The rest are more important to me than blogging, so blogging would have to wait.

  5. Bes :

SP, haha! Have you already skipped those to blog? Come on, tell us the real truth. ;)

So you would basically not give up basic hygiene, right? Interesting. :)

  6. Klearchos :

I suppose nobody can smell you through a DSL line if you quit showering!! lol

  7. Bes :

Klearchos, thanks for stopping by and commenting, I really appreciate you checking out other conference members. :)

Yes, not sleeping more than that says a lot. I am myself sleeping less on most days, though gradually I am starting to sleep more after the body has been exhausted. :)

Also, true! No one can smell you through a DSL line. :D We have to wait for webcams that come with “smell detectors” that produce the same exact smell on the webcam participants side as everyone else. So if Ronald smells bad, everyone watching his webcam can smell it too. :p

  8. Simonne :

Well, I’d skip checking out the latest news. As for the rest, let’s see:
    1. This takes about 4 minutes. How much could I possibly blog in 4 minutes? Not too much, therefore I would brush my teeth (and think of my next post, of course)
    2. This can be done while revising a post to be published. I would not skip it. Besides, I think slower on an empty stomach.
    3. This takes 2 minutes (grab the laundry, throw it in the machine, put some detergent on top and push a button). I would not skip it (but I’d think whether I can make a blog post about that)
    4. I’d skip it, OK (the latest news in my country are horror anyway, with a suspended country president and a bunch of mafia guys trying to get him out for good)
    5. I’m not exercising, so that’s nothing to skip here.
    6. It takes 10 minutes. I would not skip it. The water, running down your body can make a great source of blogging inspiration.
    7. Which of them?
    8. It takes 20 seconds. Why skip it?
    9. I would not skip that. My cat would eat the ants and get sick, so I’d spend more time at the vet with her than cleaning the house.
    10. I never take naps, so I can’t imagine if I’d skip it or not.

Nice challenge. I never thought at priorities this way. Thanks.

  9. Bes :

Simonne, thanks for coming and commenting! :)

I would also skip the news unless something was on that I feel I “must” know about something, or views of others about something. Now, regarding your points:

1 : Interesting point. I am guessing some people can quickly post an update or ask their readers a quick question, or even post something like “I am late today, will blog at night instead of the usual time, sorry!

So, hmm, so far, no one wants to give up brushing for blogging, even for a day. :)

2 : I myself am hungry almost all the time, though I eat whenever I am hungry and have no fixed schedule. Thus, the concept of breakfast for me is weird: every hour is buffet time!

3 : Good point again. Some people have their laundry rooms outside, like in many apartment buildings, and some people have to go to laundry shops to do their laundry. I wonder if someone would be willing to push the laundry time to the next day if they absolutely must blog about something.

4 : News these days is usually depressing, so skipping it makes sense. Being aware of something is one thing, but being aware and not doing anything but stressing yourself out more is something completely different.

5 : I see. :) Some people may even call blogging an exercise for the brain. :D

6 : Interesting. Feeling fresh and refreshed does feel better!

7 : Which of them? Do you mean which of the sexual partners or which one of the romantic or non-romantic choices?

8 : I know many people who spend a long time on their hair; for those people, combing and managing hair in 10 minutes will be a speed record.

9 : Do you think we can train cats to take out the garbage? :O

    10 : Interesting. :)

Thanks again for the comment. I am glad the “challenge” gave you another way to look at things. :)

  10. Simply Precious :

No, no, I didn’t mean giving up hygiene to blog! Just delaying it… ;) LOL. I just blog early in the morning! Haha, most of the time, I’ve already gotten most of the blog written out(like today’s), and I’d go online right after I wake up, and just publish it, and then go brush my teeth and all the other stuff. Haha, that’s what I meant. I usually don’t blog in the mornings very often, though, but if I were, then that’s what I’d do.

  11. Bes :

Thanks for clarifying that SP. I think I was also referring to delaying it, instead of giving it up for good. :)

When you write your post in advance, do you reread it to edit it before publishing it? Do you also write the blog posts in the morning? Is that a good time to write posts?

  12. Simply Precious :

Nope, I don’t re-read it. LOL, you know that! I usually don’t re-read my stuff, since it basically is my diary/journal, and all of the events happened so recently, I usually don’t re-read what I’ve written… hahah… Yeah, sometimes I’d write blog posts in the morning, if something changes, but a lot of times, things doesn’t change, so I just leave it how it is… LOL… I don’t know if it’s a good time to write posts or not, since my blogs are just my diary/journal, so it doesn’t matter to me… LOL… Unlike a lot of the other people’s blogs that comments here… LOL…

  13. Bes :

SP, thanks for replying. What I meant was if you reread anything right before publishing the post again. From your comment I am gathering that you are a good writer and do not need to reread your stuff. :)

So one thing I am assuming: you would not give up waking up in the morning for something else, right (?), since if you do not wake up, you may not be able to publish/write a blog post? Or, like you said, since time doesn’t matter to you, mornings are not something you try to prefer when it comes to posting or writing. :)

  14. Simply Precious :

LOL, yes, I did know that you meant if I re-read right before publishing it, and yes, the answer is no. And it is definitely NOT because I’m a good writer; it’s only because I don’t want to read what had just happened… As for me waking up… I basically have a set time to when I wake up, and usually on the weekends, it’s the same time I wake up for school anyways… Just some stuff happens at home that’s uncontrolled by me, so I wake up around the same time regardless, so that’s why I know when I’ll publish a post… The only time I publish a blog in the mornings are on the weekends, since I usually have nothing to talk about, since my weekends are so dull, unlike my weekdays… Haha, you should know that by now! That’s why when it’s a school day, I’ll publish the entry after I come back from school, and when it’s on the weekend/a day off, I write/publish it in the morning…

OT: Why the heckaren’t you on instant messenger?! Trying to avoid me?? Hahah, I’m just playing! =P

  15. Simonne :

    Hey, Bes,

I do have a comment at your no 1 answer: if you can do a certain thing in 4 minutes, it means that you can always do it in the next 4 minutes, so there would be no point in delaying things like brushing teeth.

As of training the cat to take out the garbage: yes, they come already trained to do that. It’s only they take it out from the bags. :)

  16. Question: do you wish, or do you expect your readers to comment on your blog? at The Reasoner :

[...] should be a fun question to ask yourself, just like the last question about whether or not you would skip some activities to blog instead. When it comes to getting comments, do you expect your readers to comment on your site, or do you [...]

  17. Bes :

SP, I see what you mean. Sometimes I find it boring also that I have to reread my own stuff. However, as time passes and for some articles, that feeling is slowly calming down. :)

I had not realized that, since I was focusing on your great quality content instead of the publishing timestamps. :D

I was in deep sleep at 9:33 pm [more on this soon], when you posted the comment.

Simonne, thanks for clarifying that. You are right, 4 minutes will still leave time to blog because of the 10-minutes time frame in the question itself. :) Good observation.

Also, I almost forgot that skill the cats have, thanks! I have noticed that too. Now if I could only train a cat to drag the garbage bag to the dumpster and then rip out the contents, that would be sweet, no? :) Maybe not so sweet for the people who will have to clean the area afterwards.

  18. valerie :

    Uh from that list? lol
    I’d skip 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10. :P

  19. valerie :

But you know… my last 10 minutes is usually taken up with taking the dog out, making sure the stove and whatever else is turned off, and wrangling a 3 year old into the Jeep, so…

  20. Bes :

Valerie, to sum it up, you would skip the following points:

    3 : Doing laundry,
    4 : checking news,
    5 : exercising,
    9 : cleaning the house,
    10 : taking a nap

Interesting. I should add your daily tasks into the list also, or into a future list:

    11 : Walk the dog
12 : Checking if the stove and other things are turned off before leaving
13 : “Wrangling” someone into the Jeep

    Thanks for sharing! :)
