If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Falling asleep because of medications

Posted in Life by Bes on Nov 15, 2005

I went to a few places yesterday, including the hospital. I’d been up since 6 in the morning and had only a 4 hour sleep the previous night. I then went to one of my course seminars, which I haven’t been to for a long time. The doctors have told me to have complete rest for at least 90 days, but I can’t do that; I’ve missed so much work, courses and life, that I can’t afford to keep sleeping or getting wasted on meds. In the hall where the seminar was taking place, I couldn’t sit straight, nor could I focus well because of having taken 4 pills an hour before. Almost an hour into the torture, however, I fell asleep for about 90 seconds because of being literally drugged with legal drugs from Walgreens. I woke up with a sudden jerk for reasons unknown to me, as if I was electrified by touching an open electric socket. I somehow slammed my knees under the small table attached to my chair and my legs to the empty chair in front of me, and it made a huge sound that resonated throughout the hall everyone was sitting in.

A few people including the lecturer turned their attention toward me, and I had to do something. Instinct kicked in, whether it worked or not; the pen in my hand immediately started scribbling in the notebook in front of me. I was drawing circles and different shapes and writing different letters that didn’t make sense, and most of the people thought, I think, I was studying and had accidentally hit the table. They all turned their attention back to the lecturer, and the lecturer continued with his lecture.

An hour later, the same lecturer was giving several examples of a complex concept by including people in the class as being part of the different examples. For some reason, everyone was included in his world of examples except me. I guess he didn’t think I was writing something important. Since I’m probably on his special list now, I guess I’ll try not to wake up at all after a nap in his class, instead of trying to avoid napping altogether. Thank you modern medicine for giving us legal ways to knock ourselves out; long live the pharmaceutical companies [hmmm].

Hi Chrissy. Thank you so much for sharing. If I may ask [you can reply via e-mail if you wish], is your medication directly related to sleeping or something else? My apologies if that is not an appropriate question.

Are you cutting back on your sleeping on your own because of other things related to the medicine, or is the medicine helping/making you stay awake more?

    Thanks!
