Winter holidays in Austria

Dreading the winter blues this year? While winter may bring, snow, ice and a distinct lack of sunshine, it also lets you enjoy the many exciting winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, telemarking, ice-skating and snowshoeing.

And what better place to revel in the winter wonderland than Austria! Set in the middle of the Alps, the land of The Sound of Music and Mozart’s concertos, Austria is the prefect place to turn your dark winter mood around by experiencing the bright side of all that snow and ice.

To help you get into the spirit of things, here is a list of the best holidays Austria has to offer.

Best Winter Holidays in Austria

During the winter, Austria’s mountain villages swell to bursting with skiers who are eager to try out the slopes in the region where their sport was born. You can choose from a wide range of luxury resorts and traditional, family-run chalets, where you can experience the mountains firsthand.

After a fun-filled day on the slopes, relax in one of the many spas and experience the unforgettable après-ski treatments, designed to help you revive your strength. Popular locations for skiers include Innsbruck, the Arlberg region, Montafon and Kitzbuhel.

But Austria isn’t just skiing. You can also wander the streets of Vienna, where you can experience the art, music and the Baroque architecture that this gem of a city is known for. You can visit Stephansdom, the Hofburg palace and the MuseumsQuartier.

If you plan your holiday before Christmas, you can also visit one of the many traditional Christmas markets, which offer handicrafts and handmade knick-knacks as well as festive treats. Or, if you’re up for a side-trip, take a few days to discover and be inspired by Salzberg, where Mozart composed some of his greatest works.

Make It Happen

While Austria is considerably less pricey than it’s neighbour, Switzerland, it still has a reputation for expensive holidays, particularly during the prime skiing season. But there are many ways you can raise the funds.

To finance your dream winter holiday, the first step is to plan exactly what you want to do and where you want to go, so you have an exact amount to work towards. Then, start by cutting expenses, sticking to a conservative weekly budget, and switching to the cheaper versions of your household items. You can also find creative ways to earn extra money like walking your friends’ dogs, selling your original artistic creations on sites like eBay and Etsy, or selling your (gently-used) outdated electronics on musicMagpie. There is no shortage of ways you can gather the funds for your winter wonderland trip.

So this season, don’t let the winter blues get you down. Instead, revel in winter’s charms and book your dream holiday to Austria today!

I am from Austria and always spend my winter holidays here. Most of my friends travel somewhere warm during that time, but I love the snow. I can highly recommend the Christmas market at Schönbrunn palace, if anyone visits Vienna in December. :)

Even though im correctly in Sweden the country of snow i have to say that Austria is still one of the great winter-countries Ive been to, my first stop was by car in Januari of 2006 on my way to Italy and Ive told my self that Ill have to get back to it later, and we did, December of 2006 for 4 days again on our way to Italy. I loved it.

You should try Sweden the next time, its not that bad here either, even though i came from a worm country to Sweden in early 2000 i fall in love with Sweden every winter.

    Thanx for sharing your experience

One region in particular is well suited to breaks of this kind and if you choose one of the traditional villages in the Tyrol for your winter snow holidays in Austria then you will not be disappointed.

love love LOVE Austria. We took a trip to the swiss alps and then headed over to vienna afterwards. We stayed 3 nights, ate awesome food, and caught an opera. Line up for a couple of hours and you can get the cheap seats for only 5 euros. totally worth it!
