If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Online communication may be hindering your offline communication skills05.05.07

I am slowly running into an increasing number of people in the offline world who seem to be communicating with others as if they were communicating online. These people do not realize that they have either forgotten, or do not easily realize, the proper ways to interact with others in person. Now, each individual in this world has his or her own way of interacting with others, so the “proper” way to communicate is probably relative to and for each person.

However, you can easily realize how some people are actually communicating in person as if they were communicating with someone online. While communicating online has its benefits, it has also hindered the ability of some people to communicate effectively in the offline world. Here are two examples that I have experienced in the last week alone that show how comfortableness with online communication may be negatively affecting the offline communication skills for some people.

Thought: On boredom being a powerful motivational tool05.01.07

Imagine being bored because of sitting in a hospital waiting room for over an hour, waiting for your name to be called for a regular checkup. To avoid being bored, you may start talking to other patients around you, or you may start reading a magazine lying around the waiting room. You may even take a small nap, hoping that you will hear your name being called. In all of these possible steps that you take to avoid being bored, you use boredom as a tool to take an action. Boredom basically motivates you to do something.

A Series of Blamable Events03.27.07

Here is what happened today from around 5 am in Bay Area until around 11 pm in Orange County and Los Angeles. This should give you an idea about 2 different ways to look at certain days.

I woke up this morning around 5 am to get ready to head for the airport. I printed a few things on the computer and then got a ride with a friend. We left the house about 15 minutes late and got stuck in traffic. Once at the airport, the plane left about 30 minutes later because the cleaning crew was taking some time to clean the plane, and maybe also because the pilot was walking around enjoying the terminal.

Avoid telling people they are wrong03.24.07

One of the biggest mistakes I see people making everyday is to tell someone during an argument: “You are wrong.” Those three words, when combined, have a very scary effect on people. The word “You” makes a statement very personal. The word “are” makes it sound like there is no way to argue about it. The final word is like a final blow in an action movie: “wrong” says that someone is stupid enough to not be right, since that word is coming out of someone else’s mouth with so much intensity.

Many people do not like to be told what to do, let alone be told that they are wrong. Even if a person is wrong, he/she becomes defensive because of the natural instinct of not wanting to look like a fool in front of others. That is what you make someone feel or look like, a fool, when you tell them that they are wrong so clearly. Avoid telling others they are wrong. Focus on other things instead to make your point.

Avoid following people’s advice without thinking yourself03.20.07

We do it almost daily. We ask others for advice, both online and offline. While asking others for advice is a good thing, you should analyze each advice before you act upon it. Just because some famous person recommends something does not mean you should follow that recommendation. Anyone can try to give you advice; you have to see whether or not the advice in question applies to your unique self and situation.

The Art Of Reacting To Criticizing Comments02.21.07

Getting comments from people makes many bloggers happy. Increasing number of comments usually shows that the number of people reading your blog is increasing. You will, however, run into comments from time to time that criticize what you have to say. People may disagree with your opinions, or they may be offended by what you suggest through your writing. If you can plan out any reactions you may have to comments that criticize you or your blog, you will win over people who may not agree with what you have to say. I would like to talk and share with you an important concept that helps me everyday with this. I call it “The Art Of Reacting To Criticizing Comments.
