If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Question: Why are you online at this very moment?09.15.08

Today’s question is very simple and very important one. You are most probably online at this very moment, while you read these very words. My question to you is: Why are you online at this very moment?

Finding out why you are online at this very moment

Would it not be very nice and so productive to realize the exact reason or reasons you came online to be online at this very moment? Once you realize the reason or the answer to this question that applies to you, you can realize how much you depend on the online world. That can help in realizing whether or not you can easily switch the online world for you whenever you consider it to be unnecessary, by finding out the offline replacements and alternatives to the very online reasons that make you go online in the first place.

Allow me to give some example answers and reasons to help you figure out this question more. Please feel free to be as brief or as explanatory in your answer as you wish.

Question: Would you skip offline activities in order to chat with an online person?08.06.08

This is a very simple question that affects me on a daily basis. It is a question that is slowly ceasing to exist in any form: the offline world vs. the online world, due the the association and interaction I have with people online. Let us imagine a scenario where you question the validity of giving more importance to chatting someone online, to obtain nothing other than satisfaction from that chatting, compared to offline activities.

For this question, let us assume that you have no financial interest in that online contact with whom you are chatting, and that you interact with that online contact simply because you enjoy or value it in some manner other than to pass time. Would you give up some offline activities, on a one-time basis or even regularly or randomly, in order to chat online with someone that you have never met offline?

Twitter messages that exist because they exist06.25.08

Do you have a Twitter1 account? I do, and I call it “BesZ On Twitter” among other things, sort of like saying Bob on Drugs or Bes on Sprite. Just like other things in life, Twitter is a tool that many people use without understanding why they are using it. Many people on Twitter add nothing useful to their own lives or the lives of the Twitter machines2, yet they Twitter because they can. They Twitter so that you and I can look at their Twitter and wonder “Why?” I guess I should be grateful for the existence of such people: without them, people like me would either have gone extinct long time ago, or would have never existed.

With some people posting normal and nice Twitter updates, and with many others going psycho and posting everything they do in a day and claiming that they do not want attention, Twitter is one of the best examples of how technology can be used for good things and how technology can be abused and overhyped simply because of the existence of that technology. Today I would like to share with you some different Twitter messages that people can submit to Twitter for the sole reason of increasing their Twitter count and to get more of their life details into the attention of other people. And to appear cool also.

Twittering for no reason other than to Twitter

If you have any questions or comments about this footnote or footnotes in general, please contact me. Thank you.
  1. Twitter is basically an online announcement tool where you can let others know what you are thinking, doing, or anything else you wish, as long as you can fit it within the 140 word limit. []
  2. More strain on the machines :( even if it means more popularity and potential for the Twitter company. []
  3. Twitter followers are basically other registered Twitter members who have subscribed or chosen to follow your updates. Anything you Twitter is shown to those subscribers through their main Twitter page, and also through e-mail, instant messaging or cell phone updates if those people have chosen to receive your Twitter messages through such methods []
  4. Isn’t it interesting that it’s hard to find that many people who like a few things on Twitter but hate many other things, or vice versa, or that many people who look at Twitter in terms of its usefulness in life and its comparison to other existing tools which already do everything Twitter does? I am confused and find it interesting, as I think Twitter is overall a hype and brings only 2 main useful things to the table. Those 2 things can be discussed in a future article maybe. What do you think? []
  5. You did not forget the original meanings of the word “Twitter”, did you? 0_0 []

Bes Z’s Poor Practical Guide to Surviving Without Much Money - Part 1 - Electricity Usage04.24.08

Today I would like to start offering some dedicated tips and suggestions for the poor on how to change life habits so that money can be saved. The first part in this series will focus on your electricity usage. This guide applies to many individuals on this planet who have to pay for electricity usage at the house. Also, for every dollar that I list below, simply assume a similar unit for your own current currency in your region of the world.

What does being poor mean in this series?

If you have any questions or comments about this footnote or footnotes in general, please contact me. Thank you.
  1. Avoid playing with the meter or trying to open it if it is not open. Electric companies charge a heavy fine and sometimes pursue police records for anyone who tampers with these meters. []
  2. Keep the fish tank water motor running however; you do not need to torture fish to save more money. Otherwise, you can sell the fish tank and the fish or give them away to someone who can take care of them. []
  3. The mp3 players and other electronics better be necessities and not just for fun. Otherwise, you can get cheaper alternatives and sell the mp3 players and other electronics. []
  4. If you find the link to that article, please let me know. I found a link to that article while reading Lifehacker, by the way. []
  5. Simply asking photo labs in different areas will not hurt: “I was wondering if it would be possible for me to please get the batteries from the disposable cameras that you throw away. I only need the batteries and cannot afford them, and I would be very grateful if you could give me some batteries from time to time or even just once.” Worst come to worst, they will say “NO” with a weird face and you can walk out with a weirded smiling face if you wish. If you can find even a single store that is willing to give you such batteries every 2 to 3 weeks, or even every month or two, you may never have to buy those AA-sized batteries for many months or years to come. []
  6. See if you can exercise in places where people will not freak out if they notice you exercising. A lot of people in this world get easily spooked if they see someone doing something different. Unfortunately, a lot of criminals also do different things, so doing different things results in you being assumed to be a criminal at first. For example, exercising in a family neighborhood in the parking lot in the middle of the night, while someone notices you, may result in the police coming over and asking you why you chose that time frame to exercise and that neighborhood. Sure, there is nothing wrong with exercising in that exact manner and at that time, but remember: doing things differently on this planet does not mean everyone will understand you. You have a lot of barriers to break. This will be a topic for another article very soon. []

10 Stereotypical Elements to Offline Unprofessionalism11.09.07

When was the last time someone said that you were a professional individual? When was the last time someone told you that you were acting unprofessional? By now, you may have already read my 5 ways to be professional anywhere. Professionalism and unprofessionalism1 are confused with the idea of a job profession so much, that the majority of the society now thinks that professionalism is the direct child of the concept of a job profession.

Since stereotypes are everywhere, today I would like to present to you tips for 10 stereotypical elements to offline unprofessionalism, or hurdles to offline professionalism: hair, money, tattoos, housing, external and internal attitudes, transportation, attire, relationships, and jobs. Because of these 10 things, you or someone else may have a hard time coming off as a person who exhibits professionalism.

  1. I call being unprofessional a sign of unprofessionalism. Consider this my creation and a trademark if you have not heard about it before. :) []
  2. Emo here refers to the concept of taking the emo kind of music, or emotional music, and applying it to different parts of life. This is not something that focuses only or even at the very concept of being emotional about things, but about letting certain extreme emotions dictate our attitude towards things. Some applications can include wearing certain colors of clothing, dying hair to certain colors, eye lash colors, wearing white socks, black dress shoes, having enough facial hair to at least show your skin, etc. The “emo” trend itself does not completely and fully revolve around the concept of being emotional. Instead, being emo today means being emotional in terms of living a life in certain ways with the main and sole purpose to show that you are emo, and not necessarily to show emotions or being emotional about things. []
  3. If you do get my and my site name as a tattoo, let me know. I am sure I will be more than excited, I think. []

Stalker, stalker, oh my new stalkers11.04.07

You walk around in circles1,
I am the center.
You always hear what I say,
even when I whisper.
You look at me like that other girl2,
like a damn predator.
Wherever I might want to go,
you are already there.

  1. A guy I met last month who is following me in different ways and spreading rumors about me. He also drops into any conversation I have with any female; not sure why. He also follows a few other girls to their homes, including the other stalker girl mentioned here. []
  2. The new girl who thinks we are dating, and the one who keeps calling me several times a day. That story deserves a post of its own. She also, in her desperate times, calls the stalker guy to ask him why I am not calling her, which results in him getting excited and pursuing me to spread rumors about me, in order to make me look bad so she go drool after him instead. I hope he wins, as I don’t want her! []
  3. A professor said this last week, after I said DAMN WHAT COUPLE? to him. []
  4. I did get a glimpse of his orange t-shirt, before he got into the elevators. I had an appointment so I did not follow him at that time. I called him later and asked him if he was at the university around that time and if he saw me. He giggled and said he was around the university, and he was not sure if he saw me or not. []
  5. You would imagine San Francisco area as having less homophobic people. You’re completely wrong. Let me be, maybe, the first one on the planet to say this: San Francisco and the entire Bay Area has more homophobic people, in terms of anti-gay-lesbian-bisexualism feelings and not numbers, than most other states. Only here you can’t be physically violent about it easily without being noticed easily. []
  6. The other one being the new obsessed girl []
  7. every experience makes me feel like a certain way. Imagine being in the restroom at a university when your phone rings, and you hear a voice from the other end of the restroom saying “Are you going to answer that?“, the voice being the voice of that guy stalker. He wasn’t even supposed to be at that movie theater that day, which was about 45 miles from where our usual meeting/encounter point, the university, is. []
  8. I should maybe make a public log of everyone following me. If anyone is interested let me know. []
  9. I am sure he is at least bisexual because of many things, but he always says he hates gays because he is an “African-American Christian influenced by Muslim culture, and both of those religions are against the existence of gay people.” Maybe I should start saying I am gay to get him and her off my back, though I wonder if that will result in him stabbing me instead because of that. []
  10. Lucky me, eh? Not only am I avoiding a girl who thinks we are dating, I now have to look out for a guy who likes her and is obsessed with me because she is obsessed with me. They complete each other in their quest to stalk me: she stalks me around the house and he follows me whenever I leave the house. []

Gone MacBook Gone10.24.07

If Ronald ever needed the help of the blogosphere, this is it. On October 23th, 2007, between 0700 and 1100 Central Standard Time, Ronald, from Ronalfy, lost his one and only child, the Apple MacBook Pro. Someone broke into his house and took the laptop child. Ronald is offering a $500 reward to anyone who can find his laptop undamaged and return it to Ronald, or help Ronald so that he can actually recover it and without any damages.

Ronalds’ cat was acting strange after the incident, indicating that the kidnappers of the laptop child had a struggle with the cat who probably tried to stop them. Or maybe laptop child screamed “Help help my love! We love each other when Ronald’s not around, so help me because these people are taking me away!” while the cat ran for cover and probably said “Screw you! I value life and sissiness!” and hid in the bathroom. When the cat probably came back out, the coast was clear, and the laptop child was missing.

1 month old baby laptop kidnapped! OH THE @#$%^&* HORROR!

Thought: On feeling obligated to comment on friends and contact’s blogs09.06.07

There is a thought in my head about an increasing trend: people expecting their friends and contacts to comment on their blogs. Many of my offline friends have blogs or other types of sites now. As time passes, more and more people tell others about their sites. Some contacts expect me to regularly participate on their sites.

From what I am noticing in several personal and non-personal cases, a slowly increasing number of people are looking down at friendships and other relationships simple because someone does not comment and participate on their site regularly.

Question: Do you consider online and offline friends to be equally important?09.01.07

Today I would like to ask a question that may affect your personal life directly. Do you consider your online and offline friends to be equally important to you?

For this question, let us limit the socially broad definition of a friend to some specific things: a friend that can help you whether or not they gain something from the help, a non-business friend in a non-monetary friendship interacting on a personal level, a friend you find important because of the value of that person and their friendship and not because of their religion, ethnicity, cultural background, political views, gender, sex, etc. Also, by an online friend, I am referring to friends we make solely in the online world. By an offline friend, I am referring to friends we make solely in the offline world.

Some people prefer online friends, while others prefer offline friends. I try to mix the two in the offline world, to hopefully achieve something that has at least some offline value to it.

Question: Would prefer chatting with your distant relatives online instead of meeting them in person?08.26.07

Today’s question can be both fun and a bit frustrating for many of you. Supposing that you have at least some continuing, good relations with any of your distant relatives. If you had a choice of either meeting your distant relatives in person or chatting with them online with, which one would you choose?

I would like to ask you to keep three things in mind for this question. First, imagine that your relatives lived at a place where you could go and visit them if you really wanted to, or if you had the resources, like money or time. Second, imagine that you had some kind of a relationship with your distant relatives so that you could go visit them for any reason you considered important, or that you wanted to meet them to solve any disputes. Third, by distant relatives I am referring to relatives who may not be close to you, mentally, emotionally, or in some other manner. I am not referring to actual physical distance by the word “distant.

Question: Do you like using your real name online?08.25.07

Today’s question is related to your online public identity. Quick, before you look at anything else, do you know what my name or nickname is? Whatever answer comes to your mind, that answer can show you how my efforts have ended up representing myself in your view, whether or not I really wanted to be represented in that manner. Do you like using your real name online, instead of a fake online name?

I would like to briefly point out 3 random benefits and some drawbacks of using your real offline name in the online world, to help you decide whether or not you prefer using your real name in the online world. You should keep in mind that your real name can be considered either your birth name, or any name you always go by, both legally and in other situations. Also, when I say using your real name online, I mean using your real name in blog posts, comments, forums, chats, etc.
