If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

6 signs of Racist-R-Us11.15.07

Racism is everywhere. Stereotypes are everywhere too. Racism and discrimination do not exist only to flow from the majority to the minority; even the minority discriminates against other minorities and majorities. Many people, if not almost everyone, is guilty of racism in one form or another. “Guilty” is an interesting word here; how can we know what is right or wrong when we do not even know what is right or wrong? On top of that, how can someone be guilty of something that is probably always disagreed upon by certain people?

Today I would like to show you 6 trends I am seeing in people that results in many people becoming full-time racists. Here are 6 practical signs that you may be discriminating, and that you may in turn be having a racist attitude towards someone or certain people. By racism, I am also referring to discriminating, hating, and having a stereotypical mentality against someone or a group of people.

Thought: is Bes Gay because of moving to San Francisco?06.07.07

In this article, whenever I say the word Gay, I am referring to lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders [LGBT].

People often ask me if I am gay because of my decision to move to San Francisco. That can be a bit like asking me if I am a cop because of my decision to visit a police station. Even if I am gay, does it matter? Many people have such a huge phobia against gay people that their lives will become chaotic if they even hear the word “gay.” For me, a phobia can exist in someone’s mind, but if that phobia starts to make someone pass judgments or start hating others, I think it is more of an obsession than a phobia.

In fact, I get asked “Did you move there because you’re gay! Tell us man, we won’t care” so much, I have begun to say yes to everything others are scared of. Are you afraid of gay people? I’m gay then. Are you afraid of straight people? I’m straight then. Are you afraid of people who may be witches in disguise? You’re in luck! I’m a witch in disguise. If your fear of gay or bisexual people scares you to death, please keep that fear to yourself and do not let that affect your interaction with me or other people. It is really strange, for you and your own character, if you start getting scared simply because someone moves to San Francisco. For me, it is just funny and boring at the same time.

The flow of offline discrimination onto the internet01.15.07

I have decided to participate in the January 15th Peeve Week project . This is my first post for that project.

A website is like a house. We usually know the house owner before we visit them. Online, however, we usually get to see a website first and then come to know the author. This is a good thing, for it allows us to break away from the chains of stereotypical discrimination and instead look at someone based on their achievements in the form of their website. Having such a mentality online helps us in real life also. However, just like in real life, we usually discriminate others without realizing it many times. If we can get used to not discriminating on the web, we will be hesitant before discriminating in real life. I will summarize below two forms of discrimination that exist in the real world and also online.

Stereotypical gender bias and sales - a reflection05.06.06

Whenever I go to buy something with a female friend, I notice that the salespeople usually talk to me more than my friend. Most of the time, this happens because of the assumption that I’m the one who will be paying and thus, I’m the one who needs to be convinced that making that purchase will be a very good thing to do. For the sake of this post, whenever the words ’sex’ and ‘gender’ are used, we shall assume two things. We shall assume that the word ’sex’ refers to the actual biological nature of a human being : male or female. We shall also assume that the word ‘gender’ refers to the characteristics found in a human being that are usually attributed to a specific sex.

Mankind, womankind, humankind09.08.05

We live in an advanced society. We are supposedly living in the most advanced era in history. Man has moved out from the confinements of the caves where he seldom came out because of eating food or drawing on the walls and moved into the confinements of the high rise buildings where he seldom comes out because of eating pizza or playing games and watching television. There are several things that have changes, and several things that have remained the same, as time has passed. The very element of “mankind” has remained the same so far; man is still considered superior to the “female” species, since mankind is all about, well, “man”, and not “womankind.”

Discrimination against the minority and the majority, by the minority08.13.05

While driving by Silicon Valley today, I noticed a sign at an under-construction Lee’s Sandwiches. I was looking for a place to eat, and took a picture of what I saw [below].
