If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Thought: On being lured back for more purchases06.20.07

I get the car back from the mechanic after getting an oil change and a new fan belt for it, and I am told that the car needs a new radiator within a month or so, even though the same mechanic, on the last car change, only suggested getting a new fan belt. The bank tells me to go to their website and pay a certain fee for a program that will help me save “even more money” on my accounts, though I am not sure how I was saving any money already.

The grocery store cashier, while giving me a bag for my purchases, tells me that they will have a limited supply of a new brand of orange juice soon, and that I should come back to buy some within a few days or else they will all be sold out for a while. Maybe businesses know that I can be lured back in by attractive things like orange juice?

Advantage Rent A Car took advantage of me04.06.07

Approximately 24 hours before I left, I booked my trip via Expedia and paid Expedia for a car by Advantage Rent A Car for around 6 days. I paid the tax and the Expedia.com booking fee also for the entire trip. Everything was set. I had a printed confirmation and I was on my way. I thought I would rent the car from Advantage Rent A Car at the airport once I arrived in Los Angeles and could then start driving to go to different places to do many important things. I was wrong. Some Series of Blamable Events were about to change my entire trip. One of those events was that Advantage Rent A Car would not honor my paid reservation.

The Truth Behind Rebates01.22.07

We see them everyday and everywhere. Rebates, that is. Retail outlets, electronic stores, even grocery shops have mail-in-rebates now. The price tags on items mention that if you buy something for a certain price, you will get a mail-in-rebate in the form of a rebate check for a certain amount at a later time. Such offers sound enticing, but in reality they are usually a scam. Rebates are used by most companies to make customers spend more and wait around for a rebate check that usually never comes in the mail.

3 technological advancements that are somewhat still useless01.17.07

I have decided to participate in the January 15th Peeve Week project . This is my second post for that project.

Human beings have for a long time depended on tools to achieve goals faster. From cars to computers to watches and cell phones, we all use some tool that helps us do things more efficiently. With advancements in technology, however, more focus has been put in the last decade on adding glamor to things instead of improving those things. Here is my list of 3 small technological advancements that were intended to help people but at this time are simply not doing as much good as originally hyped by their respective industries.

Two simple steps to offer stress free shopping01.06.07

For many people, shopping is a way to relax. Window-shopping and buying things on a whim makes some people feel happier. When people are relaxed, they are confident about making big decisions like spending money. That is why it is important for shopping places in the real world to allow for a stress-free experience for shoppers. The more relaxed a shopper is, the more focused the shopper can be on shopping instead of things not related to it. Unless the stress arises from the pricing or the store itself, based on my personal experience, here are 2 very simple steps stores can take to offer customers a stress-free shopping experience.

Time Warner Cable: no followups with customers12.17.06

An internet connection is to an online experience what a heart is to a body. Without it, you can’t browse anything unless you like saving pages offline. The overall browsing experience has been good since I switched to Time Warner Cable last month. Even though I had an issue earlier this month regarding bad communication from Time Warner, the overall service so far has been nice. Last night, however, the connection dropped without any warning around 9 pm. I tried a few things like restarting the modem, disconnecting the cable wires and changing the settings on the modem and my computer. Nothing worked, so I decided to call Time Warner.

Backing out of classified ad deals12.11.06

Selling things online is a great way to make more space in your home. I like using online classifieds like Craigslist to get rid of things like movies, books, and sometimes furniture. When it comes to asking me questions, people usually contact me through email and sometimes over the phone. Many times people will ask me if I could hold some things for them until they had time to pick it later during the week. Most of the time, these people never finalize the sale by never showing up.

Time Warner Cable: no communication12.07.06

Recently, Time Warner Cable bought Adelphia, the company that provided cable services in my area. I switched to Time Warner Cable from SBC DSL service a few weeks ago. I got onto the Adelphia network which, I was told, would soon be upgraded and switched over to the faster and more efficient Time Warner network.

Narrow-minded business approach of wanting either a lot of money, or no money08.29.06

I took my car to an authorized Honda service center to get an oil change around 5 pm today. There weren’t that many customers there, and the only cars that were there were already being looked after. The staff that wasn’t looking at the cars was either doing paperwork or sitting around. I told one of the staff members that I was there for an oil change. He said it was too late for an oil change, since any oil change after 3 pm required an appointment. He further said that all the people who specialized in oil change had left for the day. He did, however, have people who specialized in the 30K service, which was “only $130 including tax.” Oil change costs only $19.95 these days at most Honda dealerships, so he further explained that the $130 was a bargain as that would include the oil change and a host load of other tuneups.

Offering alternatives to customers instead of turning them away08.24.06

Businesses have to develop an attitude where not only they try to sell a product, but they also try to keep in mind that they are trying to fulfill a need or a want of a customer. With that mentality, businesses can train their employees and customize their products and have a broader sense of how to offer products to customers even if the products differ slightly that the exact requirements specified by customers. Thus, instead of saying “We don’t have that, sorry“, businesses can say “We have something similar to what you need.

Bes Z’s Top 5 new plans for fast food places08.01.06

Many people know more about the location of nearby fast food places than the whereabouts of their close relatives. Whether it’s because of the necessity of survival through eating or the satisfaction one gets by buying food, the trend of depending on fast food and paying top dollar for it is starting to become something more than a cultural norm: it’s becoming a cultural necessity. Keeping that in mind, corporations are coming up with brilliant ways to make more money, while giving customers the same exact thing most of the time, and even less on many occasions. I have created and worked on a list of five new ideas that food companies may use in order to bring in millions more in profits.

Your bank on your side, and your bank on no ones side03.30.04

The next time you think you will be safe if your credit card is stolen because your bank will be there to help you and do a chargeback, think again. If you enter your credit card and personal information onto any site, you can be held liable and responsible for it by your bank. According to the Mercury News, a bank can tell you that since you yourself entered the credit card information on a site, whether it is a bogus Paypal site or any phony site which is out to get your money or use your identity for something similar or worse, you cannot have a chargeback for any such charges.
