Question: Do you prefer reading blogs written by bloggers from your own ethnic background?08.05.07

This can be a very serious question, if you try to apply it to yourself. Do you prefer reading content produced by bloggers whose ethnic background is the same as yours? Do you prefer linking or commenting on blogs written by people from the same ethnic background as yourself?

More and more bloggers are trying to link only to bloggers of the same ethnic background

5 offline stereotypes you can use to stereotype bloggers07.12.07

I like certain kind of stereotypes. If I go to a bar and I do not get carded once in a while, it is awesome. However, sometimes, I even get asked to show my ID to be able to get a student discount or to be admitted to any rated-R movie in theatres, like The Last King of Scotland. I like to think it is because of the fact that I look young, though sometimes I wonder if it is because of the way I act.

Carrying on that tradition onto the online world, I would like to present to you 5 offline stereotypes that many are successfully bringing into the online world, ensuring that there is an abundant supply of stereotype to associate people with.

The concept of being considerate to others06.06.07

Here, I would like to talk about the concept of being considerate “to” others, and not just being considerate “of” others. The idea is to not only coexist with people with different views, but to actually appreciate them and implement them and their differing views, and the concept of them doing anything they want differently than us, into our own ways of thinking and life.

I was driving on an almost empty freeway today when I noticed a very slow driver in one of the middle lanes, the same lane I was in. Even though I was within the speed limit, it seemed that I either had to change lanes to get ahead, or simply slow down. A thought came to my mind “Aaah, slow driver, move!” and then I realized: I was not being considerate of this very driver! The freeway was empty, I did not own any rights to this lane, and I could simply overtake this person if I wanted to. However, instead of doing that, I had felt as if this person driving slow in one of the middle lance was an annoying thing I had experienced. In my view, that was being inconsiderate to that other driver, who probably simply wanted to drive slowly, and safely, on a rare day when the freeway was not crowded at all.

I wonder how many times we may feel online that someone or something is annoying us, but in reality, we are just being inconsiderate. Why is it that many different views like cultures, religions, political views, and even online views on things like blogging, dictate or advice us to do something specific, but rarely, or never, tell us that we should be accommodating and considerate to others and conflicting views also.

The flow of offline discrimination onto the internet01.15.07

I have decided to participate in the January 15th Peeve Week project . This is my first post for that project.

A website is like a house. We usually know the house owner before we visit them. Online, however, we usually get to see a website first and then come to know the author. This is a good thing, for it allows us to break away from the chains of stereotypical discrimination and instead look at someone based on their achievements in the form of their website. Having such a mentality online helps us in real life also. However, just like in real life, we usually discriminate others without realizing it many times. If we can get used to not discriminating on the web, we will be hesitant before discriminating in real life. I will summarize below two forms of discrimination that exist in the real world and also online.

German stereotypes in DaimlerChrysler & Volkswagen ads08.07.06

For the past month, I’ve been seeing DaimlerChrysler commercials everyday featuring the chairman of DaimlerChrysler, Dieter Zetsche, as Dr. Z, a name which was apparently copied from my earlier posts and nicknames. The ads focus on the German appearance and the thick German accent of Dr. Z to show that the company is indeed making better cars. Volkswagen (VW) is doing something similar, airing ads that portray a German engineer going to different dealerships to judge the performance of other cars by using his German sense of humor and personality. This results in the stereotyping of the German individual in order to show that the two companies have superior cars compared to companies that are not associated with the German culture in any manner.

Discrimination against the minority and the majority, by the minority08.13.05

While driving by Silicon Valley today, I noticed a sign at an under-construction Lee’s Sandwiches. I was looking for a place to eat, and took a picture of what I saw [below].
