How Cell Phone Helps You In 5 Ways During Busy Times08.04.07

This article has been updated with more useful content. The original, unedited content of this post is included at the end of this article. Thank you for your patience while I was moving.

I just got done changing houses. I moved from the cool Bay Area to the warm boundaries of the Bay Area. I prefer the cool Bay Area, though my move was more necessary than being voluntary. My new place is a bit better in many aspects, though I still prefer the atmosphere and the weather that Berkeley has to offer.

One of the things I noticed during this move was the amount of time I saved and the stress I was able to avoid because of having a cell phone. Here I would like to talk to you about the 5 ways a cell phone helped me tremendously while I was moving from one city to another, in order to give you an idea of how a cell phone can help you a lot during busy times.

T-mobile order and pricing; Missing in Action09.25.06

I called T-mobile a week ago on Monday to get a new camera phone. I pressed 611 via my current Samsung x495 and asked the lady on the other end about the deals they had on camera phones. Within a minute I was told that I qualified for a phone for only $9.99, and it sold in stores for $199. I’ve had several Samsung phones before. Each one had its ups and downs, but overall I’ve been satisfied with Samsung phones.

Reacting to civilian and police cell-phone drivers09.11.06

Ever seen someone get annoyed at other drivers for talking on cell phones? These annoyed drivers will sometimes go to great lengths to let the other drivers, who are blabbing on their cell phones, know that talking on the cell phone will grab the attention of those annoyed drivers. They’ll honk and they’ll drive next to the cell-phone drivers just to grab their attention. They’ll show fingers of all sorts to annoy the other driver also, as if driving fast and showing fingers while driving fast was safer and nicer than talking on a cell phone. Now, do you think these annoyed drivers have the same courage to honk and show fingers of all sorts at cops who are driving and talking on a cell phone?

ABC vs. T9 mode, and horror movies08.17.06

I went to Blockbuster today, trying to find a good horror flick. I text messaged Jerine to ask for some recommendations. She responded quickly as usual, letting me know a few good names. I usually type on my cell phone using the standard ABC mode, in which I have to type each word manually. While I was typing a response to her text message, a young girl in her early teens near me was also typing something on her cell phone while waiting for her parents. She typed very quickly and then put her cell phone in her pocket. I think she was typing using the T9 mode, in which the cell phone will automatically assume the words you want to type, saving you from typing a lot of key strokes.

Content and length of text messages07.24.06

Text messaging is moving on from being an emerging trend to becoming the cultural norm. I get several text messages everyday; I got 12 text messages yesterday alone. Text messages have gone from being very brief and up to the point, to being extremely vague and lengthy, and in many cases, serving no purpose at all. While text messages use abbreviations and different lingo to express different words, these words overall do not make the messages any clearer, and sometimes they also fail to shorten the length of a text message.

Overusing the different ways of leaving messages07.20.06

Many moons ago, people used to leave short, discrete messages on answering machines. The message used to state the name of the person calling and the reason they called. People were confused and shy about this new technology, thus not leaving long speeches in their messages. Slowly, answering machines became more popular and people started leaving longer messages, stating the reason they called along with any other unrelated thoughts they might have had on their minds. It was all right, since checking the answering machine at home was supposedly the only way to know that someone had contacted you, and it costed nothing. The same way people were excited about leaving messages on answering machines was the same way people were excited listening to their answering machines. Just like answering machines, new advances in technology allowed for better levels of communication, and these communication channels were also respected in the beginning, and then overused.

The world of cell phone bills07.19.06

Cell phones are amazing gadgets. Not only do they allow you to communicate with anyone anywhere, they also allow you to rupture your wallet in ways not imaginable before. Take my cell phone as an example. It’s a Samsung SGH-x495 phone built for the T-mobile network that cost me $225.47 to use for the last 27 days. Even though that amount is less than the previous record of $559.01, it still warrants hiding the wallet or the cell phone in a secret place while one is drunk, so that the chances of finding either things ever again are slim to none.

Cell phone may cause risk of Cancer03.31.06

I’ve said it to many people, and many people have told me this too. Even then, I have a cell phone, and my use of it will continue [almost a rhyming poem, darn!]. The National Institute for Working Life recently published the results of their research on cell phone usage which strongly suggest that using cell phone for prolonged periods of time does cause brain tumors. My research in college wasn’t done in vain, after all.
