Thought: On boredom being a powerful motivational tool05.01.07

Imagine being bored because of sitting in a hospital waiting room for over an hour, waiting for your name to be called for a regular checkup. To avoid being bored, you may start talking to other patients around you, or you may start reading a magazine lying around the waiting room. You may even take a small nap, hoping that you will hear your name being called. In all of these possible steps that you take to avoid being bored, you use boredom as a tool to take an action. Boredom basically motivates you to do something.

Personal Blog Subniches04.30.07

Personal blogs are everywhere. You probably run into personal blogs everyday where people talk about their daily lives. Majority of the personal blogs do not make any money, whereas a few personal blogs make more money than some offline jobs. Even though people are focusing more and more on writing about specific niches on the internet in order to make money, personal blogs are being overlooked unfairly as having any potential for growth.

In reality, personal blogs probably have the highest growth potential compared to almost any other blogging niche on the internet due to one simple fact: the personal blogging niche has not been categorized into smaller, more specialized personal blogging sub-niches, the way life is categorized into smaller thoughts and feelings everyday.

Meme - 5 Things I Enjoy About Blogging04.27.07

Last week I got tagged for a “Why do you blog” meme by Jonathan. This was a bit similar to “The Goal Meme” for which I was tagged by Carolyn. Because of the similarity, I decided to take the approach that Jonathan took on his site and list a few things that I find enjoyable about blogging. You can also read my introductory post on what memes are, by the way.

Thought: on donating to charity to get more blog readers and customers03.22.07

The following post is written to all bloggers who talk about donating to charity based on the number of comments they get, the number of MyBlogLog members they get, or anything else that means more readers or money for them or their blogs.

I am seeing a continuing trend on a few blogs where many bloggers are talking more and more about how they want to donate to charity. These bloggers say that they will donate something for every comment they get on their site. While this may seem like a nice thing to do, think about this: if your own life, or the life of your father, mother, daughter, son, sister or brother, depended on the number of comments on your site, would you feel good about it? Would you not wonder why your life depends on the number of comments a rich person gets?

Do you donate because it is a good thing, or do you donate to get more blog traffic and comments?

Announcing Reader Appreciation Project03.18.07

Because of your support in everything I wrote, even if you disagreed with some things, I am happy to announce a new project : Reader Appreciation Project (RA Project). The Reader Appreciation Project intends to do one thing: appreciate people more. It will hopefully help us appreciate our blog readers more. Since all bloggers are also readers of their own comments, this should help everyone. You can also read what the RA Project is all about.

Thought: On Online Copyright Laws03.18.07

I face one issue regularly while blogging: how to treat online content created by other people, and how to let others treat online content created by me. Copying and pasting written content online is easy, so sometimes it is tempting to use someone else’s writing in your own. While giving credit to other people is a good idea, does giving credit to someone automatically justify the use of other people’s content?

I recently saw an article by Daniel that listed 12 things you should know about copying and using things online. That article made me realize that having good intentions alone does not make people who copy with good intentions innocent.

Slow down when facing problems achieving your blogging goals03.17.07

If you face issues while trying to achieve some goals, you may be tempted to give up. What I would suggest before you give up, or before you even think of trying harder, is to take a small step back and see why things are not going smoothly. You can do this by observing yourself, and by observing both people who are successful and people who are not successful at the same goals you are pursuing. When you run into problems, continue your efforts at a slower pace in order to figure out why you are facing problems.

Why Non-Intrusive Ads give you more freedom to avoid ads03.16.07

With so many shopping places to chose from, no wonder more and more companies are getting aggressive in placing their ads in different places. Because these ads are everywhere, people have started to avoid them. The companies have in turn become even more aggressive in their advertising techniques, which results in people who hate ads to run farther away. What the ad companies need to realize is that showing ads everywhere does not work, even if those ads are creative. Why? Because most ads are intrusive and waste people’s time. Non-intrusive ads are better at marketing a product or a service.

Are you treating your blog commentors like slaves?03.13.07

Comments are important“; we hear that all the time. While asking people to leave comments is nice, not feeling obligated in any manner to your blog readers is not nice. In my view, if someone takes the time to leave you a comment, they deserve something back. It is the same in our offline lives; if you keep begging someone to say something to you, you should be prepared to listen and respond to that person with respect. People who leave comments are not our slaves. We should treat commentors with respect by doing them favors the same way they do us a huge favor by writing for us for free.

Thought: on being sick and thinking of blogging03.10.07

I was not feeling well today, so I decided to visit the nearby hospital. While there, I realized that for me it has become an interesting habit lately to think about blogging as more of an an offline activity than an online duty. The concept of blogging did not seem to be a strange thing to think about while at the hospital. I am guessing that is a sign that the blogging world can indeed be seen as part of our overall lives instead of only our online lives.

Feeling motivated is useless unless you act upon it03.09.07

Motivation is an important element that can help you do different things in life. If you are motivated, you feel as if aiming for something is worth your time and efforts. While being motivated is good, you should realize that without actual effort, motivation is useless. There is no point in finding ways to be motivated if you cannot work that motivation into your efforts in order to achieve different things.

Avoid blogging the way you always have been03.08.07

You may have noticed that your blogging efforts have remained the same since you first started blogging. As time passes, things change, and you should change accordingly. You have to keep refreshing and changing the types of efforts you put into your blog in order to keep your blog appealing to the new changes. Sometimes you can rely on past experience to do things. Sometimes, however, you have to learn new things while not relying on your past experiences. Why? Because you have to keep changing the way you approach your blog in order to have your blog survive in the long run.

Thought: On writing things to please people vs. writing in ways that pleases people03.06.07

Find a blogging niche that is not saturated.” I read that advice everyday on different blogs. It is an online school of thought, to find and dedicate time and effort to a blogging topic that will attract a lot of audience and appreciation over time. There is another idea that is slowly dying, an idea that does not subscribe to any school of thought: writing whatever you feel like writing, with dedication, and in ways that arouses other people’s interest. On the web, you can write specific things that pleases people, and you can write in ways that pleases people. What kind of writing should you do? You decide.
