If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Thought: On blogs being regularly posted content06.22.07

The debate of what defines a blog will probably continue forever, the same way the debate about what constitutes good writing has been going on for a long time. One of the things that I am noticing on many sites, is that any kind of regularly posted and updated writing is being considered a blog, including advertisements hidden in the form of supposed unbiased advice.

If you post something on a regular schedule, whether it is 10 times a day or once every 10 days, it can be considered and shown off as a blog without much disagreement from many people. Even if I post less about personal life and more about blogs, many people will still call it a blog, regardless of what I think.

That makes me think if the very essence of a blog can be divided and based on a single element, or even a single sole element, like regularly posted content.

Question: Are you in blog debt?06.16.07

Today’s question is very important, as it can define and affect your relations with other people. Do you feel obligated to other people because of what you do on your or other blogs? Are you in blog debt?

Ronald asked me this question recently: is it possible to be in blogging debt the same as in the offline world? I think it is a very important question that many of us think about regularly, in one form or another. You may owe someone online something because of you asking them favors. Sometimes, people may do things for you and may expect you to do something in return, thus forcing you to be in blog debt. To be in a blog debt, your blog can be on its own domain, or you can have your blog through networks like MySpace or Mixi.

5 examples of Blog Debt

Following are a 5 examples of blog debts that you may end up owing others:

Thought: On blog posts and comments being the lowest levels of communication for most people06.14.07

This is just a thought about things already happening. It is funny how at the moment, communicating via blog posts and blog comments seems to be the most primitive form of communication for many people. What do I mean?

If you meet someone on your blog and would like to talk more and become closer friends, you would probably e-mail each other more, or talk via instant messengers, voice chat with each other online, see each other through webcams online, text each other, call each other or meet in person. It seems as if everything else is one step higher than communicating solely via a blog post and a blog comment, for most people and as of now. You do not see most people talking on the phone first and then, in order to get closer, talking only through blog comments.

What do you think? Does that make blog posts and comments more or less important than other forms of communication?

5 Things No One Likes To Blog About - June 200706.13.07

With more and more people talking about new topics that draw blog traffic, there are fewer bloggers people who talk about random, strange things in an interesting manner. I consider The Reasoner to be both a personal and a non-personal site, though since almost every post here has some unique touch to it because of what I write, it can probably be said that this blog is a 100% personal blog. That is why I usually feel the need to talk about something random in this world, in this universe, something that people usually do not talk about, yet they should.

Of course, one of the reasons I do not go about posting completely random things every day is because of the output: what would such a random post about a very unique random topic provide in return, non-monetary and non-traffic for me, and something specific and unique to you as the reader?

As of today, following is a list of 5 things that most bloggers, if not all, usually do not talk about. The reason for such a trend is because many people focus on bringing in traffic and on what advertisors are looking for, and now how the blogger him/herself can take any topic and provide some useful output to the reader. This is also one of the reasons most of the bloggers today are not writers but only marketers and sales people, but they portray themselves as being bloggers and writers.

Question: Do you want guest bloggers on your blog?06.10.07

This question goes hand in hand with yesterday’s question. Would you be willing to have someone else guest blog on your own blog?

Yesterday’s question focused on the question of guest blogging yourself on other blog. Today, you can focus on the question of whether or not you want others to guest blog on your own blog. Having guest bloggers can mean both more posts and more responsibilities for you and your site. If you do not currently have a blog, in the future you may have a blog where you will have a choice of either having or not having guest bloggers.

You may or may not want to have guest blogs on your blog because of various reasons:

Question: Do you want to guest blog on other blogs?06.09.07

This can be a bit of a more serious question than usual, though the answer may be a lot of fun depending on what you think. Do you like the idea of guest blogging on other blogs?

You may have already seen my Guest Policy here or the guest policy at RA Project, which allow you to guest blog site easily. You may have a blog of your own, or you may be a person who loves commenting instead of having a blog. You may even be a reader who prefers reading to writing. Regardless of you who may be, you may or may not like the idea of writing posts, or guest blogging, on other sites.

The concept of being considerate to others06.06.07

Here, I would like to talk about the concept of being considerate “to” others, and not just being considerate “of” others. The idea is to not only coexist with people with different views, but to actually appreciate them and implement them and their differing views, and the concept of them doing anything they want differently than us, into our own ways of thinking and life.

I was driving on an almost empty freeway today when I noticed a very slow driver in one of the middle lanes, the same lane I was in. Even though I was within the speed limit, it seemed that I either had to change lanes to get ahead, or simply slow down. A thought came to my mind “Aaah, slow driver, move!” and then I realized: I was not being considerate of this very driver! The freeway was empty, I did not own any rights to this lane, and I could simply overtake this person if I wanted to. However, instead of doing that, I had felt as if this person driving slow in one of the middle lance was an annoying thing I had experienced. In my view, that was being inconsiderate to that other driver, who probably simply wanted to drive slowly, and safely, on a rare day when the freeway was not crowded at all.

I wonder how many times we may feel online that someone or something is annoying us, but in reality, we are just being inconsiderate. Why is it that many different views like cultures, religions, political views, and even online views on things like blogging, dictate or advice us to do something specific, but rarely, or never, tell us that we should be accommodating and considerate to others and conflicting views also.

Thought: Forgetting the bloggers who helped you06.05.07

Whenever any of the sites listed on my links page stops working, I start wondering about those site owners. Where did they go? What are they doing now? Why did they let their domain name expire? Are they ok? These are some of the questions I think about regularly. Ever since my first days of blogging, or running a website, I have had a lot of luck finding people who have helped me, and finding a lot of people who have taken advantage of my help.

I wonder how many of us actually think, after our blogs start becoming popular, about the bloggers who have helped us improve in the past.

10 signs you are a naïve blogger06.04.07

Everyday, many bloggers are making a lot of mistakes when it comes to blogging. However, these bloggers keep making such mistakes on a regular basis, while feeling proud, because they notice many other famous bloggers doing the same thing. Because of such mistakes, many bloggers tend to be naïve in the world of blogging, since they do not understand the concept of blogging, and the impact their blogging has on their blogs and the blogosphere. Making money through a blog does not guarantee that one is a professional or a mature blogger, so I believe it can be good for us to realize certain things that may make us naïve in our blogging efforts.

Following is a list of 10 signs of naïve bloggers that Ronald helped me create. These signs can be present in many people and do not guarantee that someone is naïve. However, if any of these points are the main focus of a blogger, or the focus of their obsession, then chances at that the blogger in question is more of a naïve blogger instead of a useful blogger, for the blog readers.

Question: Do you hope to make money from your blog?06.03.07

This can be the most important question for many bloggers. Whether you are a personal blogger or a non-personal blogger, do you hope to make money from your blog?

For many people, blogs cost money. Domain names, hosting, buying layouts or logos, buying software to make layouts or logos, and a myriad of other things result in us spending money and time on our sites. Many bloggers can try different sources of income in order to cover up any expenses for their blogs. Usually, there are two ways to make money from those sources through a blog: earning money directly and indirectly.

Earning money directly vs. earning money indirectly from your blog

Question: Do you want your offline friends and family to visit your blog?06.02.07

This should be both an interesting and a very important question to ask yourself. When it comes to your blog or your site, do you want your friends and family, that you know in person, to know about your blog?

With so many people focusing on getting their content indexed by search engines, it is becoming even more important for many people to find ways to have search engines stay away from their blogs. Why would anyone want search engines to not crawl their blogs? Well, there is one simple reason why: a blogger may not want their offline contacts to know about their blog.

Offline people knowing vs. Offline people not knowing about your blog

Thoughts: On not being able to handle online stress05.29.07

Online stress can stem from many things in the offline world. Online stress can also result from realizing that one is headed for, or already in, the Blog Hell. Wherever the stress may be coming from, it seems many bloggers are not able to handle the stress, even if they can manage to control the stress.

Bloggers choosing between Blog Readers and Blog Commentors05.28.07

I am seeing an increasing number of bloggers reward and interact with blog commentors more than blog readers. While it is true that a blogger can communicate easily through comments with a commentor, it is also true that a blogger can communicate easily through a post with the reader. Because of the thirst for more blog traffic, many bloggers are slowly starting to choose between blog readers and blog commentors, creating a thin line between different site visitors.
