Thought: On feeling obligated to comment on friends and contact’s blogs09.06.07

There is a thought in my head about an increasing trend: people expecting their friends and contacts to comment on their blogs. Many of my offline friends have blogs or other types of sites now. As time passes, more and more people tell others about their sites. Some contacts expect me to regularly participate on their sites.

From what I am noticing in several personal and non-personal cases, a slowly increasing number of people are looking down at friendships and other relationships simple because someone does not comment and participate on their site regularly.

Question: Do you prefer reading blogs written by bloggers from your own ethnic background?08.05.07

This can be a very serious question, if you try to apply it to yourself. Do you prefer reading content produced by bloggers whose ethnic background is the same as yours? Do you prefer linking or commenting on blogs written by people from the same ethnic background as yourself?

More and more bloggers are trying to link only to bloggers of the same ethnic background

Thought: When is criticism real, and when is it only a linkbait?07.19.07

I have been thinking about trends in the online world where it is easy to call any criticism a piece of writing that is not worthy of anyone’s time. Imagine you wrote an article talking about how bad your employer is, and I wrote an article saying that the only reason you criticized your employer on your blog was to gain traffic for your site. What would you think?

I wonder if such a thing is justified. I also wonder if there is any absolute way to make sure something was written with some good intentions, or if something was written only to generate traffic for one’s site. Without such an “absolute way“, it can be hard for anyone to criticize anyone else and not be labeled as a person who criticizes others just to gain publicity and traffic.

Example: Connor Wilson saying that Franky criticized Matt Mullenweg only to get traffic

5 offline stereotypes you can use to stereotype bloggers07.12.07

I like certain kind of stereotypes. If I go to a bar and I do not get carded once in a while, it is awesome. However, sometimes, I even get asked to show my ID to be able to get a student discount or to be admitted to any rated-R movie in theatres, like The Last King of Scotland. I like to think it is because of the fact that I look young, though sometimes I wonder if it is because of the way I act.

Carrying on that tradition onto the online world, I would like to present to you 5 offline stereotypes that many are successfully bringing into the online world, ensuring that there is an abundant supply of stereotype to associate people with.

Thought: On sharing other’s personal information07.10.07

The same way many people share other people’s personal and private information in public, I am noticing an increasing trend online where bloggers and others will share other’s private information, entrusted only to them, in one form or another. I am also noticing that some people keep repeating the “I want to share your personal life details” behavior even when advised against it.

Sharing someone else’s personal information anywhere can be bad

Question: Do you like responding to all blog comments?07.08.07

Today I have a fun question that probably applies to every blogger and every blog reader and commentor. Do you like responding to each and every blog comment?

There are two main ways you can respond to blog comments. One could be as a blogger, and the other could be as a blog reader.

Question: Do you like using MyBlogLog?07.07.07

Today’s question revolves around your view of a specific blogging service: MyBlogLog. At its simplest, MyBlogLog is a service that is supposed to help you track specific people who visit your website, along with those people’s details like name, gender, any associated website, etc. Keeping that definition of MyBlogLog in mind, do you like using MyBlogLog?

A while ago I talked about 5 things that MyBlogLog can improve. I can see some of the improvements being implemented that I recommended to Eric at MyBlogLog, like the revamped MyBlogLog community pages, where the focus is more on the related blog itself through the use of RSS feeds instead of having the RSS feed be a non-significant part of a community.

Following are some pros and cons of using MyBlogLog. If you can think of any other things, please let me know and I will update this list and give you credit.

5 ways people copy The Reasoner07.03.07

Someone recently told me about how they love the way I run The Reasoner. A day after they told me that, that nameless-blogger took a lot of the techniques I use here on The Reasoner and applied it to her own blog, while telling her readers that she has come up with those ideas herself.

I have been blogging in various forms for more than 7 years, so it is interesting for me when someone who earns a living from their blog or someone who copies me comes along and starts claiming blog expertise as their skill.

Another person I talked to about this told me to go ahead and talk about the things that people copy from my site. It sounds weird, since I usually do not brag about myself. So, after about 15 days of hesitating and rewriting this repeatedly, and after pointing out only the things that are clearly copies from my site, I would like to present to you here 5 ways many people copy The Reasoner. Some people give credit, while others simple act as if they were born with these skills. This post is going to be the very definition of bragging on many levels, so brace yourselves!

Question: Do you prefer no blog comments over disagreeing comments?06.24.07

This can be an important question to ask in order to realize how you want to communicate with your blog readers and commentors. Do you prefer having no comments on your blog, instead of having a lot of disagreeing comments?

The Art Of Reacting To Criticizing Comments applies to comments of almost any kind. You may be running a personal blog, a business blog, or some other kind of a blog, and may have enabled comments for the different content you post online. However, people may be disagreeing with what you say on a regular basis. Many of the disagreeing comments you receive may be very informative, yet those comments may be disagreeing with everything you have to express through your blog, all the time.

Would you prefer having no comments instead of dealing with comments and commentors that only exist to disagree with you? Do you prefer having no comments compared to having comments that disagree with you?
