If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

My Response to My MyBiggestComplaint Complaint and Assumptions06.16.07

This post was actually intended as a comment response to my Peeve Week 2 post, “Mixing Spam and Invitation Perceptions Together” on Ronald’s site. Since it is turning into a discussion, Ronald is going to turn off comments on that original post, and the conversation can be carried on here.

Therefore, anytime I say something like “my comment above” or “my post above” or something similar, I am referring to my original post and comment, and other comments, on Ronald’s site. If you have no idea what I am talking about, and would like to know, please head on and read “Mixing Spam and Invitation Perceptions Together“, as that will hopefully explain everything about the context of this e-mail. Thank you. :)

Hi “not george“,

First of all, Thanks for the comment. Ayya, this is going to be another long comment, which is definitely not good. I am hungry again, and I really need to write this quickly. It seems that the biggest issue here is the way a debate is carried on; I am trying to carry the argument using the logical points from my original post which are still valid as of now. My post was about showing how assumptions and perceptions about things can be different online, and hard to judge, and how peeves about online assumptions can be done in a peeve week project. You and George are focusing on how me thinking and assuming negatively about something that I consider part of a bulk mailing is not good, and that I should be not voice any concern, even through doubts and doubting my own self publicly, about anything and everything that comes through my contact form [even though the admins at MyBiggestComplaint have said and admitted that they did e-mail the same thing to multiple people].

The concept of being considerate to others06.06.07

Here, I would like to talk about the concept of being considerate “to” others, and not just being considerate “of” others. The idea is to not only coexist with people with different views, but to actually appreciate them and implement them and their differing views, and the concept of them doing anything they want differently than us, into our own ways of thinking and life.

I was driving on an almost empty freeway today when I noticed a very slow driver in one of the middle lanes, the same lane I was in. Even though I was within the speed limit, it seemed that I either had to change lanes to get ahead, or simply slow down. A thought came to my mind “Aaah, slow driver, move!” and then I realized: I was not being considerate of this very driver! The freeway was empty, I did not own any rights to this lane, and I could simply overtake this person if I wanted to. However, instead of doing that, I had felt as if this person driving slow in one of the middle lance was an annoying thing I had experienced. In my view, that was being inconsiderate to that other driver, who probably simply wanted to drive slowly, and safely, on a rare day when the freeway was not crowded at all.

I wonder how many times we may feel online that someone or something is annoying us, but in reality, we are just being inconsiderate. Why is it that many different views like cultures, religions, political views, and even online views on things like blogging, dictate or advice us to do something specific, but rarely, or never, tell us that we should be accommodating and considerate to others and conflicting views also.

Thoughts: On when not to link to other blogs in your posts05.03.07

You read it on almost every prominent blog: “Link to others.” Many people preach it, as if not linking to others would result in damnation in the blog world. I like linking to other sites for only one reason: I want to link to other sites because they have some interesting information related to something I am writing.

There is one situation, however, when you should avoid linking to others. If you link to others with even the slightest hope that the person you linked to will link back to you, you have probably biased your article, consciously or unconsciously, to include a link so that you can hopefully get a link back. In my view, that can be a very bad thing unless you know for a fact that such is not the case.

Questions are better than assumptions02.14.07

When you deal with people on your blog, make efforts to question different things in order to know more about those people. Making efforts to know more about your blog readers gives you more chances to realize the value of your readers, and it also shows your readers that you care about them. If you make assumptions about people instead of inquiring and asking questions, you run the risk of offending and alienating your blog readers.
