If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Thought: Are personal blogs the least manipulative kind of blogs when it comes to the idea of earning money?08.07.07

This is a thought that was intended to be only a few lines long, and yet it has turned into an extensive article of some sort. Since personal thoughts are important and even a single thought can be expressed in a dozen books, I hope you do not mind the length of this article, as the message inside it is very dear to me. I appreciate your time reading this, if you decide to read it all. If not, I appreciate your time reading this very paragraph. Knowing someone has read even a single letter written by me on my site is a very interesting feeling.

This thought and endless variations of it have been on my mind since the beginning. I am noticing an increasing trend where an increasing number of bloggers are manipulating their readers in order to make money. More and more blogs are talking about making money in different ways, and more and more people are saying that their blog readers come first, when in reality all they are doing is saying things, without actually doing anything. In this article, when it comes to talking about the idea of manipulating, you can keep in mind that money is usually a big factor why people manipulate others. Also, you can keep in mind that by the the very words “writing” and “reading” and any of their variants, I am referring to all forms of creating thoughts and all forms of feeling those thoughts, including writing and reading, speaking and hearing, producing and feeling, touching, etc.

It is sad, yet not completely surprising that that original personal blogs, from the original days, which did and do nothing but talk about random things because they want to, are slowly disappearing. They are being replaced by blogs that exist in order to make money, and blogs that are highly influenced by the idea of money earned directly or indirectly through and because of those blogs. I wonder if the simplest of personal blogs are the least manipulative compared to other kinds of blogs.

Simplest personal blogs aim only to be heard - nothing else

Thought: Impressing people in order to appreciate them?06.21.07

He’s just trying to impress me“, she said to me. I agreed with her; the guy in question was visiting from another country and was indeed trying to impress her at this party. However, me and my friend knew that this guy was just impressing her in order to appear as a good person. She told me she knew he was already in a relationship, and so was she, and she knew he wanted nothing from her. Even then, my friend thought about the reasons this guy would want to impress her.

She started questioning the possibility that he could be impressing her in order to appreciate her. That reminded me of my post last month in which I hinted at the question of whether or not impressing someone is the same as appreciating someone.

It seems that in many cases, one can effectively try to impress someone in order not to benefit themselves, but to appreciate the other person. This in turn automatically results in both parties benefiting, hopefully.

Is it a crime to impress others?

Bloggers choosing between Blog Readers and Blog Commentors05.28.07

I am seeing an increasing number of bloggers reward and interact with blog commentors more than blog readers. While it is true that a blogger can communicate easily through comments with a commentor, it is also true that a blogger can communicate easily through a post with the reader. Because of the thirst for more blog traffic, many bloggers are slowly starting to choose between blog readers and blog commentors, creating a thin line between different site visitors.

On Blogging To Impress Others05.18.07

A long time ago, a friend of mine who was helping a prominent human rights organization was going to be interviewed by a local TV station in Texas about the experience she had working for that organization. My friend had both good and bad experiences with the organization, yet she told me that she would sugar coat the entire scenario, “I am going to tell them how we are given a lot of support, since I may end up applying for a job right here.

She did not lie during the interview, yet she did not reveal any of the bad experiences either. What was the result? She was honest, and she also ended up getting a very good job with the same organization.

I was thinking of that tonight, and that made me wonder: many bloggers do the same thing, by blogging in order to impress others, so is it all right to blog to impress others?

Thought: On comparing physical appreciation with mental appreciation04.08.07

The Reader Appreciation Week starts tomorrow, and that got me into thinking about something. Winning prizes can be cool. However, when we give away prizes to readers in order to appreciate, are we sending a signal that physical prizes are better than virtual words and gestures when it comes to appreciating? Is it necessary show appreciation in a physical form, or can we simply convey our feelings through emotions and words to someone else and be satisfied?

Thought: on donating to charity to get more blog readers and customers03.22.07

The following post is written to all bloggers who talk about donating to charity based on the number of comments they get, the number of MyBlogLog members they get, or anything else that means more readers or money for them or their blogs.

I am seeing a continuing trend on a few blogs where many bloggers are talking more and more about how they want to donate to charity. These bloggers say that they will donate something for every comment they get on their site. While this may seem like a nice thing to do, think about this: if your own life, or the life of your father, mother, daughter, son, sister or brother, depended on the number of comments on your site, would you feel good about it? Would you not wonder why your life depends on the number of comments a rich person gets?

Do you donate because it is a good thing, or do you donate to get more blog traffic and comments?

Announcing Reader Appreciation Project03.18.07

Because of your support in everything I wrote, even if you disagreed with some things, I am happy to announce a new project : Reader Appreciation Project (RA Project). The Reader Appreciation Project intends to do one thing: appreciate people more. It will hopefully help us appreciate our blog readers more. Since all bloggers are also readers of their own comments, this should help everyone. You can also read what the RA Project is all about.

Are you treating your blog commentors like slaves?03.13.07

Comments are important“; we hear that all the time. While asking people to leave comments is nice, not feeling obligated in any manner to your blog readers is not nice. In my view, if someone takes the time to leave you a comment, they deserve something back. It is the same in our offline lives; if you keep begging someone to say something to you, you should be prepared to listen and respond to that person with respect. People who leave comments are not our slaves. We should treat commentors with respect by doing them favors the same way they do us a huge favor by writing for us for free.

Run polls and ask for comments only when you are listening03.07.07

Polls and comments are good ways to find out opinions of your site readers. I myself look forward to comments from you, and I have also started running polls on this site. While it is nice to know what other people think, you should realize that when you ask someone for their opinion, you have to respect that opinion, whether or not the opinion goes along with your beliefs. On your blog, you should treat every vote in your polls and every comment on your blog with utmost care. Otherwise, you are simply asking for opinions without actually caring.
