Thought: On writing things to please people vs. writing in ways that pleases people

Posted in Online by Bes on Mar 06, 2007

“Find a blogging niche that is not saturated.” I read that advice everyday on different blogs. It is an online school of thought, to find and dedicate time and effort to a blogging topic that will attract a lot of audience and appreciation over time. There is another idea that is slowly dying, an idea that does not subscribe to any school of thought: writing whatever you feel like writing, with dedication, and in ways that arouses other people’s interest. On the web, you can write specific things that pleases people, and you can write in ways that pleases people. What kind of writing should you do? You decide.

Do you prioritize nature or presentation of content?

You have two options when you write something, assuming that the the quality of content is the same in both cases: prioritizing the nature of the content, or prioritizing the presentation of the content. The difference lies in whether you want to write something that people already find interesting, or if you want to write something that you find interesting and want people to find interesting also through your writing.

For example, you can write about Paris Hilton since many people like reading about her, or you can write about charity and include Paris Hilton as an example somehow since many people may find posts that talk about her interesting.

Write in a way that comforts you

As long as you are happy with what you write, you can try either approach write on your blog. You should be comfortable with the way you write, whether it is writing things that people like or writing things in ways that people like. You can try changing your writing styles from time to time to see how it feels to approach writing from different perspectives. Regardless of how you write, as long as you have great content and passion for your blog, you can achieve desirable results through your writing.

I write my blogs about things I find interesting, and want others to find interesting also. I don’t really “follow the trends” about stuff that’s already “interesting”, and write about that. That just makes your blog “just another blog”… I like being unique, but that’s who I am, though, so my opinion’s probably biased.

I agree with you about being happy about what you’re writing though! Even if there are only a couple of people who reads your blogs, if you’re happy with it, then that should be it! You don’t need to please TONS of people, because that is definitely not going to happen. You can’t please everybody.

But yes, nice entry, Bes, as always! LOL.

Chau, thanks for explaining this further. Smile I am glad you like this piece. Following trends is simply weird in my view unless there is a logic behind it. For me, “because others do it too” is not a good logic. We all have opinions and feelings. If only we can channel in our own true self into our blog somehow, we can be unique, the way we are in our offline lives.

“You can’t please everybody“; you are right. Many people do not realize this at the moment. They think because of the money rolling in on blogs, they can try to please as many as possible without wondering what they are actually doing.

Thanks again for the support Chau. Smile

Nice one again Bes. If we don’t really write something we like or we are interested in, I don’t think we will still have the passion to go on the blog.

The best thing is, when you write something you really want to share, and lots of people appreciate that. EX: making money online!! LOL. Razz Well…. It might not be a that good instance. haha.

Thanks Iris. Smile I really appreciate the kind words. Grin You are right: if we don’t do something voluntarily, we will probably not have passion for it.

Sharing is good, specially if you love what you share, yes. Grin You are funny! Yes, making money online is an example of it. Razz

Heh. Thanks again for your nice and informative comments! I really appreciate them. Smile

I think the aim when we write should be to write what you want to write….

If there is passion and heart in your writing then the results will show. I think there are times when writer do compromise and then many will agree they are not satisfied with themselves.
