Question: Do you want guest bloggers on your blog?

Posted in Online by Bes on Jun 10, 2007

This question goes hand in hand with yesterday’s question. Would you be willing to have someone else guest blog on your own blog?

Yesterday’s question focused on the question of guest blogging yourself on other blog. Today, you can focus on the question of whether or not you want others to guest blog on your own blog. Having guest bloggers can mean both more posts and more responsibilities for you and your site. If you do not currently have a blog, in the future you may have a blog where you will have a choice of either having or not having guest bloggers.

You may or may not want to have guest blogs on your blog because of various reasons:

Wanting to have Guest Bloggers vs. Not Wanting to have Guest Bloggers

Some Reasons To Want Guest Bloggers On Your Blog:

  • Having more types of content and writing on your site
  • Attracting more audience because of different writing and topic styles
  • Building relations with the guest bloggers and any audience they may have through any of their blogs
  • Wanting to take time off from your blog so someone can fill your writing spot
  • Wanting to share responsibilities on your blog

Some Reasons To Not Want Guest Bloggers On Your Blog:

  • Wanting to have a single and consistent type of writing and topic style on your site
  • Wanting to build relations with others through your own writing and not other people’s writing
  • Guest blogging goes against your blogging philosophies and maybe some offline philosophy
  • Wanting to maintain full control of your blog so that you can improve it instantly based on what you think is good
  • Wanting to revolve the blog around your schedule which may include vacations and many days of not posting anything

So, what do you think about this? Do you want guest bloggers on your blog? If you do not have a blog, would you allow guest bloggers if you get a blog in the future?

Please let me know. Smile Thanks for reading.

Having guest bloggers is a lot of work, but can be very useful in building relationships. I’m running a thing right now where I’m having about 9 guest bloggers in one week. It’s a lot of work editing, formatting, getting permissions, etc. But I believe it’s worth it in the long run.

Guest bloggers also helps give a blogger a a reason to be more loyal to your site.

Ronald, yes, guest blogging is extra work and can sometimes add to a lot of stress for many bloggers. However, when done right and if the intentions aim for it, a lot of relationships can be built or mended through it. Your Peeve Week 2 series is really nice, by the way, and it allows many people to participate because they want to.

Hmmm, could you please explain a bit more about what you meant by guest blogging being a reason to be more loyal to your site?

    Thanks for the comment. Smile

    Bes,

A guest blogger now has a personal stake in a site. It’s the same thing as building loyalty by giving someone more responsibility. It’s a trust.

I haven’t used any guest bloggers since my site is still fairly new and I’m working to develop its focus. However, I think guest bloggers can be a nice addition. They can provide different insight and perspective on issues that you blog about as well as increasing the content on your blog. Both are good things.

I agree that it will create more loyalty as well because once somebody contributes they become involved in your site.

Ronalfy, thanks for answering; basically you trust the readers by trusting that guest blogger. Good point!

El Yanqui, thanks for coming to the site, and thank you so much for your comment!

I agree, guest bloggers can indeed by a nice part, even if temporary, to many kinds of blogs. Since humans beings are all unique, hopefully, a different writer should hopefully bring in some new perspective for things. However, if the guest blogger acts like a paid writer and basically is there to promote what the original blogger wants to say, it is less of a guest blogging and can be more of an advertising.

Thanks again! I hope to see your comments around the site more. Smile

I think guest bloggers can be a really good way to let viewers and readers feel they are personally included… as well as get support if you are trying to make a point or promote something. However, it can also be a good way to open your mind, such if you for example, make a statement… another person may guest blog a completely different perspective of the situation. Though I’m pretty sure everyone gets their little point across in our ultra long comments, lol, a guest blog would add more… weight. As it’s a blog, it’s more ’solid’… hope that made sense, lol.

However, if it’s a personal blog, such as mine or SP’s for example… I can’t really think of how a guest blog may be appropriately included. Maybe I’m just not thinking hard enough right now, but personal blogs about our feelings and events that happen, it’s sort of weird (if you want to keep the personal theme) if someone else suddenly blogged about their day.

Jess, thanks for the comment. That makes sense, yes. A guest blog post, even if it disagrees with some certain topic that the original blogger wants to convey, still probably tries adds weight to some discussion.

Good question about guest blogging on personal blogs. One could ask guest bloggers to give their opinion about things that you have already blogged about, like analyzing situations. For example, if you post about a friend acting weird in a certain situation and what you think of that friend, a guest blogger could analyze the exact same situation and offer their version of the analysis.

What do you think? Smile This is something that has not yet been analyzed much on the blogosphere.

Hey that’s good, I haven’t thought of that. Thats a pretty good idea, and workable. I haven’t ever seen it either… I hardly ever saw guest blogs till recently, on yours and Ronald’s site =D
