Myspace, hotlinking, and site gallery
Several people on Myspace had been hotlinking to images on this site lately. All of those people are under 16 years old according to their profiles. I don’t know any of them, and none of them asked me for permission to link to any image.
Yesterday, I blocked the direct linking of any image on this site from any Myspace account. Until such hotlinkers turn 18 and make money on their own, I was guessing they could learn how to use an online picture service now or ask their parents for an increase in their allowance in order to buy some hosting space. Any of my contacts can email me or simply link to an image and let me know; I don’t mind any of my friends linking to images here.
Earlier this morning, I decided to upgrade the local gallery on this site also, since I’d saved, theoretically, a lot of bandwidth that could’ve been wasted by Myspace hotlinkers. I somehow managed to wipe off all the picture albums from the server. I still don’t know how it happened, so I’m guessing it’s because of me getting way too old. Of course, the deletion of the gallery also fixes the issue of hotlinking on a bigger level; no image to hotlink to. I’ve backups of all the pictures on my computer, so I’m going to wait for a while to see if I should move everything to Flickr or keep everything locally on the site.
Moving on from Myspace hotlinkers and picture galleries to San Francisco: Here’s a picture I took while waiting outside a clothing store called “After the Quake - Shopping Zone”, near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. The two guys on the right are resting on two statues and waiting for their families to come out. The guy in the center has the famous Boudin Bakery shopping bag on the floor. The guy on the left was hanging around, waiting for someone too.

Ugh, hotlinking.
That’s cool. They look like they’re posing for a photo shoot. Haha. Especially the guy in the center.

Wow, sorry to hear about the hotlinkers! I haven’t had any hotlink any of my images from Myspace, which is a good thing… Well, I usually keep most of my images on my domain so that I’ll know if anyone’s hotlinking it… Then I can catch them and tell them to not hotlink. I’ve also disabled hotlinking, so that’s why…

How’d you find the hotlinkers? I’m always lost when it comes to actually finding them…

people used to hotlink my drawings and claim them as their own. it pissed me off, but i liked that they hotlinked because 1) that’s how i found out, and 2) it allowed me to change the image to say *THEIR NAME* IS A FUCKING LIAR/STEALER/IDIOT/ETC type things and that always made me feel better
which photos are the myspacers linking? is it going in their profiles, or are they leaving it as comments? i’m curious as to how they’re being used since your photos aren’t something i’m typically used to seeing on myspace (read: it’s not all sparkly glittery words)

birdie — > WB! Yes, there is. I just used the htaccess file to solve the issue.
Kxia — > Heh, yeah!
It looked really cool.
Chau — > Yeah, keeping the images on our own domain results in the image being hotlinked, but also lets us know in greater detail who’s linking to images and who’s viewing them.
Jess — > ok
Valerie — > I found them by looking at picture/file requests and referrals in my site logs, and found a few myspace profiles linking. I visit their site and then go through everything to find out the picture they want to link to.
Stacee — > That is so lame! Yes, good thing with having our own sites is that such things can be found. I’ve wanted to do that too; have a message appear instead of the actual image for the hotlinkers and the viewers on their site.
They left it as comments. For example, this profile was linking to an image I had of a McDonald’s logo with a maple leaf embedded in it.

This was in one of the comments and used repeatedly by that user in other places. Also, photos of rains used in peoples background pages or art pictures and museum pictures used as background picture or to post in comments.
