BlogExplosion, Battle of the Blogs and the blind shots - Part 2
In response to my question about BlogExplosion’s new Battle of the Blogs, Jeff over at BlogExplosion responded to my original question and clarified further things for me over their ticket system. Following are the combined highlights [direct quotes] from Jeff’s responses. I had suggested, after knowing about “silent vote” and timed competition [explained below], about the possibility of hiding the identities [usernames] of the voters so that the people who got votes for their own sites don’t go around voting against someone who didn’t vote for them [Grudges].
Excerpts from BlogExplosion Staff member, Jeff, to my questions:We are working on the Battle of the Blogs feature right now .. Details should be finalized over next few days and get them into production.
Looking at making vote count silent where only people that pick winning blog win the credits, that way it incents people to pick the blog they think is best to win credits… If you cannot see who is winning then you need to pick the best one..
Second idea is making all Battles say 15 minutes long, where a few people cannot gang up to rig votes.. With a silent vote count and essentially unlimited voting for a specified time period although the credits you earn might be a little less on average the result is a better voting process..
Grudges are unfortunately going to play into the voting system no matter how we do it …
I think it is important that we do list the voters (once the battle has completed) as it does add accountability to the voting process..
With the silent vote and timed battles and giving credits only to the people that voted for the winning blog it will make the results much more relevant where even if you pick your friend (and they lose) with a timed period it means that the BEST blog is going to win each time…
Should have the changes along with optional email notifications done by next week.
That sounds very good; those changes should help a lot.

15 minutes to vote gives time for voters to actually read the blogs, which I feel makes this a fair for all.

Yes, the incentive to actually read something would benefit the competitions and also the blog owners.

they should also make it so you cant vote on a battle with someone that battled against you that day, to keep grudges from happining

That’s a good point also.

I like the 15 minute idea. That would give time to actually read the blogs. I hardly ever get to vote on those things because they are over in seconds.

BlogExplosion did start hiding the identities of people who rate your site. Maybe it’s a sign that other places within BlogExplosion will also conceal the identities/usernames.
As for the 15 minutes voting, we definitely need those, even though slowly many of the competitions are slowing down in pace already.
