Achieving Online Goals: Goal-Oriented or Action-Oriented?

Posted in Online by Bes on Jan 25, 2007

If you are thinking of setting up online goals this year, one of the most important things you can do is to realize whether you want to be goal-oriented or action-oriented. If you are goal-oriented, your main focus will be on the results and not the process. If you are action-oriented, your main focus will be on the process and not the results. Figuring out which type of person you want to be for each of your online goals can be crucial to the success of those goals.

You have to focus on how you will achieve your your online goals. If, for example, your goal is to get 50 comments on your blog every week, you are being goal-oriented and will do different things in order to get those comments. Similarly, if your goal is to participate on 5 new blogs everyday, you are being action-oriented and will participate on different blogs while hoping for good results. The underlying purpose of your goal in both cases is to bring more people to your blog.

Realizing how you would like to approach your goals makes it easier to focus on the goals. If you want to be goal-oriented, you can simply make a list of results you hope for and regularly write a list of actions that can help you achieve those results. Similarly, if you are action-oriented you can simply make a list of things you want to do and regularly write a list of results you think will be achieved because of your actions. This will help you realize what you are after and what you are currently achieving.

What do you think about this? As for me, I have yet to finalize my online goals for 2007. Once I do, I will share them here and let you know how I would go about addressing them.

That’s good. Having both types of goal-orientations helps as a person can switch back and forth and have a lot of flexibility.

Regarding my comment on your site and your response to it here, good to hear that! March will be an important month then. Smile Regarding WordPress, the dashboard should include the time frame for next release and similar data also, if possible. Smile

You are right Daniel. The important thing is indeed to know how one wants to achieve the results they expect, whether directly or indirectly.

Thank you for the encouragement, I really appreciate it.

I can be both action-oriented and goal-oriented, though I am moreso the former. Whenever I make goals, they tend to be direct actions, rather than numbers or statistics I would like to achieve. But, I also am goal-oriented, in that my goals I set are measured by numbers. Let’s use running as an example. About a year ago, I wanted to start running at least 5K a day instead of 3, but I also wanted to run the 5K in no more than 20 minutes. I hope that makes sense.

I find that those who have various ways to back up goals that are set are usually the people who fulfill them, which basically rehashes what you stated.

I look forward to seeing your list of online goals!

That makes sense Lara, yes. Knowing what kind of orientation you have and at the same time knowing how to execute that level of planning is essential, like you pointed out. It makes things clearer for the goal-setter since they will know exactly what to do and thus it will be easier to figure out how to do it.

Thanks for sharing that example, it explains things a lot. As for my goals, yes, I will post them soon. For some reason, I feel as if my goals will change somewhat as time passes, or I’ll come up with new goals eventually.
