If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

The missing car that wasn’t missing

Posted in Life by Bes on Apr 05, 2006

This is a hurried post; I simply want to type it to explain [Gulp, please don't hurt me!] why I couldn’t post yesterday, and get the whole thing out of the way so I can get back to other, more important posts. So if you see any weird sentences, or something that seems to be written by a 10-year old, don’t worry; it was.

A friend of mine visited me 2 nights ago, late Monday night to be precise, just to say hi. He stayed for about half an hour. About the time he wanted to leave, he realized he had somehow lost his car keys. We searched like squirrels for his keys, without any luck. I dropped him home in my car, and he said that he would come back the next evening to pick up the car whenever I got home home. He also instructed me to “Keep an eye on my car.” When I came back home, I looked around and found his car keys in the stupidest place possible; the front door. I don’t know how his keys dropped right outside the front door, but who cares. I emailed him, since he doesn’t have a cell phone at the moment, about the keys and told him that I’ll pick him up the next day, which was last night [Tuesday], and then would drive him back to his car. He replied back immediately and said that he would wait for me to pick him up then. Ok so far.

So I came home last night around 6 pm to take an early break from the daily routine, eat something and then go back for an exam. After the exam, I would go to my friend to bring him over for his car. When I got home, my friend’s car was nowhere to be seen. I was surprised; my friend didn’t have a ride to get here, and I knew he would not pick up the car without letting me know since, well, he said he would let me know. I tried emailing him to see if he responded quickly; he didn’t. I called a good friend of mine, his girlfriend, to see if my friend was with him. He wasn’t, and she told me that he definitely didn’t have the car since she hung out with him less than half an hour ago and he was carless at that time.

I went around the neighborhood asking the neighbors if they knew anything about the car. No one did, and everyone told me to go to the cops to report the car stolen. I called and went to 3 neighboring police stations and 4 towing companies to see if they knew where the car was. I was thinking of 3 possibilities; my friend had somehow picked up the car somehow, the car had been towed for some reason, or the car had been stolen. I was guessing the car had been towed away, most probably. However, all the towing companies in the neighborhood had no record of a car being towed from my street, and neither did the donut eating cops. I was puzzled, and I could not get a hold of my friend.

I went to to my car and started driving to a neighboring city where my friend usually hangs out on a Tuesday night. “What if the car got stolen?” and “It’s ok, it’s not my car anyhow” were the two things going through my mind repeatedly, since my friend was careless in the first place to drop his keys like that. The 20 minute drive ended up being an hour long drive, because of the the beautiful, pouring rain. I found my friend and told him that his car was missing. He replied with an uneasy smile on his face “Oh, I ran into my friend and gave him the spare key, and told him to pick it up for me since he lives close to my house.” I embarked on a a mini-lecture on responsibility and how he was supposed to let me know that the car was being taken away, instead of worrying me that the car was stolen. I missed my exam, and searched for a missing car that wasn’t, in fact, missing. He got the point, and things were supposedly back to normal. It was already past 9:30 at that time, and there was no time to even contact my professor to tell him why I missed the class. I came back home late last night after hanging out with him and a really good Professor friend of ours, since I had already wasted time. We went to eat and talk, and had a really good night surprisingly.

Now I have to get back to the posts that I was supposed to post last night. Hmmmmm.
