Meme – The Goal Meme
Carolyn from Thoughts & Philosophies tagged me again for an interesting meme. This meme is called “The Goal Meme.” The meme simply allows a person to list their goals in life. If you wish, you can read my article that describes what memes are.
I think this is one of the hardest memes ever. I also think this is one of the best memes ever. A point about a goal in life? A point about several goals in life? That is so hard! I think life itself is here so we can find out what our goals are. Along the way, we can figure out a few things we would love to have to see in our lifetime. There are a few such things for me. I just focused on one point and decided to write about it below, because if I start wondering which goal or point in life to write about, I might spend a long time thinking and not actually writing. I would like to list a goal in my life here:
Find out whether goals involving only myself are more important than goals involving others
This is one of the most interesting questions in my life. Do I focus on myself, or do I focus on others? Is a secluded life better for me than a life spent among others? Can I live a life where I keep my entire personal life private from others, yet at the same time I blend with others to be part of other people’s lives in order to live life together? If you know me in person, you probably know the answer to those questions. I ask myself everyday whether or not focusing on myself can be good and better than simply helping others all the time.
Some people help others to feel better. Some people help others to find out more about themselves. Among the many other reasons, I think I help others for two main reasons because of my experiences in life:
- Bes cannot imagine helpless people in misery or pain, both mental and physical, conscious or unconscious, direct or indirect
- To figure out more about Bes each and every moment of life.

Bes, we go through our days and our lives by rote, so often. It’s good to stop and make ourselves consider what we’d like to be when we grow up.
I’ve taken this sentence out of context, but love it, nonetheless: “To figure out more about Bes each and every moment of life”.

Valerie, lol, maybe. I am already doing it and have already been doing it my entire life though; the question I think about, hmm, is whether or not it is healthy.

I’m still being tortured. And my cat is still holding me prisoner. I’m just nice enough to feed it and change the litter every once in a while.

So, I’m curious.
Everytime I see a meme you post, the people you tag are:
As usual, I would like to tag anyone who would like to be tagged.
Why don’t you ever pick specific people? (IMO,) that’s half the fun of a meme.
I’m not asking to be tagged, I’m just curious. I don’t generally do memes, but when I see that someone tagged me, well, it’s just nice to know that someone is thinking of me and that they either think that I’d be interested in doing the meme, or that they want me to because they’re interested in my answers to the meme. Likewise, when I see someone else’s meme, I like seeing whose answers they’re interested in seeing.

lol. That is a very good question. A few months ago, if I remember correctly, I tagged someone for a meme and they replied back along the lines of:
“Thanks for the tag, but you should know that I do not like to be tagged for a meme. Tagging me publicly means that I am forced to participate in a meme, which in my view is rude. I will do your meme, but please do not tag me in the future without asking me first.”
That is the basic idea of what that person said. Since then, I have started to allow people to tag themselves, as I do not want to upset anyone. =\
You are right, half of the fun is in being tagged or tagging someone out of the blue. I will definitely tag you in the future, and I tag you for this meme also! lol.

That is just plain absurd. It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard all day (and I hear a lot of ridiculous things). Yes, it is rude to force someone to participate in something, but unless you held a gun to that person’s head and threatened to pull the trigger, you did not force them to do anything.
You should do a poll, or ask in a post how many of your readers feel this way. To me, it sounds like one person overreacting, and that’s a shame if that’s the reason that you don’t tag people (assuming that you like tagging others. If you don’t, then ignore this comment).
Tagging does not mean that the tagged has to participate. Maybe that just needs to be made more clear. You even say so in your “What is a meme?” post that it’s an invitation. Invitations can be accepted or declined. It does not mean someone is forced to attend an event or participate in a meme.
Also, taking another point from your explaination post, tagging provides a trail in which to follow back/forth to see where a meme started/ends. If you don’t tag, there aren’t potential paths to follow to see if the meme continues on, or if it ends with you. It just ends.

I’ve only participated (was tagged) in one meme so far, and then I tagged 5 more people, but only one of them accepted my tag and replied.
I did get upset a bit about that, but then I’ve also learned my lesson – don’t tag people you don’t know.
So in that sense I do agree with Bes’s approach to tagging, although I also agree with Stacee, that it’s nice to be tagged because it means that the other person values my opinion.

Stacee, I was a bit surprised also. I originally thought that interacting with others through memes would be considered good, and didn’t realize that some people might not like it.
Ok, you have a good idea for a poll! The next poll will be about memes: whether or not people like being tagged for a meme.

Yes, I made that clear in my “What is a meme?” post but I am guessing some people feel that if they decline an invitation, they may look bad in public? I’m not completely sure yet.
You are right about the trail also! Right now, there are a few memes that get carried onto my site and simply stop on my site. That is sad! Maybe I need to revive some old memes so they can be carried on, heh.

inspirationbit, you bring up an excellent point! I should not tag people I do not know. I knew that person [mentioned above], by the way, but still, it is better to tag someone you have interacted with than to tag someone out of the blue, as it may appear to be rude, or, hmm, it may appear to be a form of getting a site to link back to you indirectly [which in my view should be perfectly fine if done right].
I think I am going to tag people I know or have interacted with even a bit, and at the same time, avoid tagging people who may have a negative view towards memes [which means I have to do some research on their blogs].
