Your experience of watching movies in different environments
Have you ever watched a boring movie at a theatre? You pay money to see the movie, and it turns out to be so boring you want your money back. In such cases you usually wish you had stayed at home and slept instead. Compare that to watching the same boring movie at a party; you still watch it if everyone else watches it. You usually don’t complain about it at all.
Now, have you ever watched a boring movie in a classroom for an assignment? That movie, even if it’s the same boring movie you watched at the theatre or a party mentioned above, may be the best or the worst thing you’ll experience in the class. Either way, you’ll never complain about it in terms of wasting your tuition money.
Whether it’s the money spent on a movie or the atmosphere in which the movie is seen, a movie can have different effects on different people not only because of its content, but because of circumstances beyond the control of the movie itself or the people themselves. Imagine watching a funny movie in a theatre where everyone laughs out loud on every hilarious scene, and then imagine watching the same movie in your house, all alone.
What’s your reason for the difference in experiencing the same movies in different places?

I know when I’ve seen movies that make you gasp at the end when there is a twist in the plot (ie. Primal Fear, Sixth Sense) I find it exihlirating (sp) to have the entire movie theater gasp at the same time. Also funny movies when everyone laughs together is great. If a movie is just awful I usually just walk out and figure I made the stupid decision to see the movie in the theater anyway.

Yes, the group experience adds to the experience in many cases.
Interestingly enough, you can request a refund or a change of movie [ticket stub] during the first 15 or so minutes of any movie at many theatres.

Personally, I find that I am a lot more tolerant of a bad (boring/slow/whatever) movie if I’m watching it at home versus watching a movie that I paid for at the cinema.

Yes, at home it’s much easier to do something else, even if we paid money for renting that movie.
In such cases, however, I usually try run back to the place very quickly and tell them that I want to change the movie. Some places usually allow you to change within an hour or two without the need of any dramatic excuses.

Viewing the same movie in a different place?
Usually it’s because I’ve enjoyed it. I might buy the DVD then go watch it with my family or then my in-laws.
Hmmm… I think that’s the only reason

Watching the same movie, as in "if you would have watched the same movie" without actually watching it twice, simply to see how your reaction would have been to a movie when you saw it for the first time, but in different environments."
I also don’t buy the DVD unless I’ve already seen a movie and like something about it.

i love when i go to the movies and find that i have the theater to myself (+ whoever i’m with). then we can talk as loud as we want and make comments without anyone complaining. it’s like watching at home, but with a much larger screen and better sound.
i’m short, so if it’s a theater full of people and there are heads in my way, i’d probably enjoy a movie much more at home. i also like to lay down in bed more than sitting in a theater seat. i guess environment does make a difference, but not too much since i still go to the movies and still watch them at home.
