If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

Missing pictures to find missing cats

Posted in General by Bes on Aug 16, 2005

I have always been puzzled over the fact that almost all the cat owners, that I know of, don’t have a picture of their cat. When I get invited to their home or I meet them somewhere else, they always talk about their cats. When I ask if they have a picture of the cat, they always say that they don’t have a picture. Their reasoning falls into two circles:

  1. They don’t need a picture since they have the cat right in front of them.
  2. The cat is shy in front of the picture.

I always smile at this answer, as it sounds a bit interesting to me. However, I also get puzzled over the fact that every time a cat goes missing,

<%image(20050817-missingcat.jpg|188|280|Missing cat picture)%>

there is a picture of it on the lamppost somewhere, or at a corner, with the picture of the cat and the announcement that the cat is missing. How is that possible? Was the picture taken by the owners right before it went missing, or do the owners don’t like to acknowledge the fact that they took pictures of it? The picture itself shows the cat in such a pose that it makes you wonder if the cat was auditioning for role of the lead actor/actress for one of the cat-world movies that have haunted Hollywood from time to time. If you ask someone about the picture, they will always say that it was one of their kids who took it, unless it’s someone who doesn’t have kids, who will say that they took it long time ago, and don’t even remember.

I am not sure why taking pictures of a cat is considered to be taboo in the minds of many people, but taking pictures of a dog is considered holy and a sign of intelligence. Maybe the cats will be evil, after all, once they take over the world one day, just as shown in all the movies shown here that show the dog as being innocent and the cat being related to Catbert in one way or the other.
