Employment Solicitor, thanks for the comment. Have you experienced or dealt with such cases before? Are you associated with that site you linked to, by the way?

Do you have any advice as to what a customer should do if they see work-related discrimination somewhere?

The employment laws are not enforced as they should be. That's the main reason of discrimination at work.

Birdie; thanks for sharing that, and a very good note about leaving things untouched.

Valeria; that is a very important point, and I agree with you. I used the example of what some people do to others and it goes unnoticed, and when it is done to them by others, they yell discrimination. I used very specific examples of certain places owned by certain people that I've seen myself, and many times, encountered them myself or simply witnessed them. I do wonder, though, what rational explanation could there be for things that are obvious?

I agree about discrimination not being the only reason all the time; someone from a foreign country or even another state, who may be a 40 year old worker from an automobile industry, for example, may be disqualified from a pool of job applicants applying for a one week vacancy of being a tour guide at a local university, when there are applicants available who have graduated from the university, and there is no time to train anyone from scratch, educating them about the background and the different aspects of the university.

This is a hard subject to talk about, I think. Because sometimes what seems like discrimination, if you knew all the facts, really isn't. Not to say that you're not going to analyze it all if you have the chance. I just find that a lot of people yell discrimination without really knowing if it is or isn't. It sometimes just seems like a way out, a rationalization, a way to make one's self feel better by shifting blame.

When I was in my teens, I waitressed in a Chinese restaurant. I wasn't Chinese, but I was Asian...so waitressing wasn't out of the question. The other waiters and waitresses were also Asian, if not Chinese. The only employees that were non-Asian were the guys that washed dishes.

I cannot agree with you more! We as a society tend to attack the majority for their wrongs in order to give justice to the people...but when the tables are turned, we are hestitant because it arouses certain issues in regards to race and stereotypes that were suppose to be left untouched. The ongoing hypocrisy in our daily lives seems unfathomable, yet they happen. It's hard to imagine that these issues will be easily or swiftly resolved...but acknowleging that they exist is the first step that everyone needs to take.
