Alarm clock to put you to sleep

Posted in General by Bes on May 12, 2006

Hi. If you are new here, you may want to read more about me and this site. You can add me on Facebook, BrightKite, MySpace and Twitter. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed if you wish. Thank you for visiting and reading! : ) I really appreciate it.

After talking to Valerie online for a few minutes, I thought of an interesting idea related to alarm clocks. I was thinking of not using alarm clocks to wake me up in the mornings anymore. I could try to do that on my own. How about having an alarm clock that actually reminds me to go to sleep at a certain time?

How about setting up an alarm clock to make us stop watching TV after a few hours, stop eating beyond a certain number of minutes, stop talking for too long for each phone conversation, stop driving out for too long and of course, stop studying for too long. We can of course keep using the same alarm clock to wake us up in the morning, in case we can’t wake up on our own.

It could be an alarm clock that has multiple digital displays, telling us the name of each event for which it rings. It should be able to remember the different events and any other details we wish, so that by simply looking at a ringing or a beeping alarm clock, we can immediately know why it is making annoying noises. Thus, the real change will come in the way we treat alarm clocks. So basically, we use the alarm clock to remind us of things we usually remember on our own, like trying to come up with scenarios to get rid of uninvited guests after a certain period of time.

What do you think? Does that sound like an interesting idea? I think there must be an alarm clock that can display event names and other customized information. I haven’t found one so far though, so I have to keep relying on my cell phone and computer alarm clock to wake up.

actually my cellphone has that function. each day i have 3 alarms. one for waking me up. second, time to go to school and the third is to remind me for laundry service.
if you’ve been waking up at the same time everyday then you can rely on ur biological clock to wake you up. dont need any alarm clock

LOL you didn’t tell them what my go-to-sleep alarm clock was! Yes, when Elimidate comes on, I know that it’s wayyyyyy too late for me to be up because now the crap TV is on. I hate that show. I mean, seriously, talk about a stupid concept. Razz

    Anyway.

I use my cell phone as an alarm, too, though to wake up. I’m allowed 5 alarms to be saved and we use 3 of them in any given day, set 15 minutes apart. Wink We also use the iHome which turns on my iPod and the volume starts low but rises fast and you can’t turn it back down until it’s reached about a thousand decibles. I think it wakes me up better than our old buzzing… as long as I’m not going on 2 hours of sleep or something.

I knew a woman who claimed that she never needed alarm clocks. She’d be a counselor at camp and would have us tell her what time we wanted to be woke up and that she could go to sleep and wake up at that time, as long as she knew what time it was.

That actually does sound like a good idea.. Smile Why don’t you invent it? lol.

I do have a PDA-kind of thing on my Sidekick II that puts up alerts on my phone when I need to remember to run an errand.

i’m used to getting up when the sun is up high enough to filter through my windows and annoy the fuck out of me Wink

i don’t think i’ve ever needed an alarm. my body knows when to get up when i have to be up early. i have a friend who sets 5 alarms to go off 3 hours before she gets up. it’s so annoying when i spend the night because she’ll be kinda awake, but wont turn off the alarms. and they don’t go off by themselves either after a while.

there are "alarms" on some mail/calendar programs where it alerts you of a meeting, etc. but an actual alarm clock to do that would be interesting too. and an alarm that tells you when to go to sleep is called "mom" when you’re a kid Smile

there’s this neat "alarm of the future" thing i want to show you. i’ll leave a second comment when i find the link. or if i find the link. i promise that you’ll think it’s nifty though.

Jerine — > That’s nice. Grin For some reason, any subsequent alarms after the first one are not played on my cell phone. Thus, I have to rely on the computer alarm clock also. Yeah, the biological alarm clock works too; however, I would like to have a backup for deadlines, appointments, exams, etc.

Valerie — > LOL. Yes, I forgot, sorry. That’s funny. Whenever I see Elimidate I think "Oh boy, all the good programs on TV are gone now. Time to tune into the computer right away." Razz It’s a good idea and a good form of alert.

That alarm clock is nice! [iPod ooooh]. Hmm, I only have 3 alarms on my phone. I think they are enough for now, along with my computer.

Hmmm, interesting about that woman! Wow!

Chelsea — > Yeah! Grin I should do that! Grin The Sidekick does have many features, and I’m guessing it comes with a special alarm clock that’s better than the ones found on regular cell phones.

Stacee — > Hmmm, the windows in my room cover any direct rays of light completely. Wow, you are lucky [regarding waking up on your own].

Alarm of the future; looking forward to it. Razz

Chau — > heh. I’m sure even I will have to try a bit to allow myself to be controlled by the alarm clock to turn off things like South Park [whaaaa!].

As alternatives to your two suggestions above:
For the gradual wake up there are bedside lights available which mimike the sun rising and slowly wake you up at the correct time, all naturally. For the sudden, no option but to get up, wake up you could try one of those clocks which shoots the alarm off into a different corner of the room so you have to get up and turn it off.
