3 random annoying things people say and do without thinking much

Posted in General by Bes on Jun 07, 2006

I meet a lot of people everyday. I talk to a lot of people everyday too. Sometimes the people I meet are funny and interesting. Sometimes the people I meet are boring. Sometimes people are both funny and boring; that’s when one usually feels like crying. It’s the same case for me online; many people online are boring, and many people online are funny and interesting like Jess and Valerie. Many online contacts are funny, and many online contacts are worth blocking.

Here are some of the three things I notice on an almost daily basis with the people I meet in person, whether or not I know such people. I’m sure I would also do such things sometime, maybe because of midlife crisis. Regardless of that, these things are sure to annoy someone besides me when done or witnessed regularly.

  1. When people try to leave a room and you ask them where they are going, their reply is usually “I’m going outside.” You know they’re going outside. That’s why you’re asking them the question in the first place, right?
  2. When you take some clothes to the cashier in a department store and the cashier knows you want to buy those clothes, you are usually asked “Are you going to be purchasing these today?” No, you will be purchasing them next week. Even better, you just brought them to the counter so you can show them to the cashier before running out of the store with the clothes without paying for them.
  3. When people ask “What time is it?“, they usually point to their wrists. Do they point somewhere on their body too when asking for the restroom? Do these people point to their tummies while ordering a burger?

What do you think about this? Have you ever noticed something similar, or done something yourself? Does such things interest you, bother you, or not affect your curiosity at all?

    LOL about #3!!

Hmm… Nothing really bothers me, though… I don’t get "annoyed" by stuff like that easily; I just let it slide. Hehe. I guess I’m an easy-going person, that’s why…

Chau — > Grin That’s nice. Yes, most of the time it doesn’t bother people, and sometimes people notice and let it slide. I didn’t let it slide as it was a good thing to write about. Smile

    Hi Bes,
For #1, perhaps when you ask someone where they are going and the answer is obvious, they will come back with the obvious answer and sometimes with sarcasim. Or, perhaps the person being questioned feels as though the question is invasive and would have volunteered the info if he/she wanted you to know. I think the best way to get a detailed answer would be to make an educated guess on where they were going and ask. This shows you are thinking of them personally and kind of create a bond. Even if you don’t know the person you could suggest they were going out for fresh air because it is stuffy inside. Most people, if you ask them a question based on an asumption, will correct you if you’re wrong. So if you ask ‘Are you going to the bank?’ they will rarely just say ‘no’. They will go on to tell you their real destination.

    Hi Harmony,
Very good points. That was the whole point in my post: the answer isn’t obvious and these people think that their answer explains everything. They aren’t into sarcasm. For example, a student leaving a class during an exam and the teacher demanding “Where are you going?” and the student replying scared “I’m going outside for a while” isn’t a good answer.
Also, you have a good point on socializing. However, I was pointing in the post to the above trend, and not the socializing aspect. Also, regarding sarcasm, like I said, many people do it for that, as I mentioned also that I do and would do such things also.
Very good points, however. That shows I should have been more clear in that point regarding the above points. Thanks! Grin Nice gmail username, btw. Wink

Jerine, thanks for sharing. Smile Do you do some of the things, or have noticed some of the things? Yes, people are different which is good, and surprisingly, I think I do some other things too, in addition to the above, and it seems normal. I am guessing it is not annoying but a habit of many people copied from other things and maybe movies around them? Some things can be good, while others can be annoying depending on how much they ignore being considerate to others. Maybe one day I will have another list ready. Wink

I found another annoying thing btw.. when someone says to u "Did the bus come yet?" uhh..if the bus was here.. am i just gonna stand here to wait for another bus to come?? mayB i was just in a bad mood, that i could pick on someone easily? LOL i dunno… or when you are trying to find something.. isn’t better if you help them figure out the possibilities on where the item would be instead of saying "oh dun worry, it will be the last place you look" of course it will be the last place.. i wouldn’t be searching in another place if i’ve found what i m finding.. hmm…i dunno.. just trying to add Razz

lol. That usually happened to me when I was waiting at a stop where only one bus ran through. May be people wanted to know if I missed the bus and thus they missed it too.
Heh, yes, it’s going to be in the last place always. Razz

johnny, thanks for the comment. Those are some good points too. Smile I should do another post soon on when some things may be random and when some things may be out of respect, or a combination of the 2 or something completely different.

Erin, thanks for the comment too. Smile That is a very good example, heh. That makes me want to start an article on such labels and trends. Smile

And Jerine (from comment #4), I just reread your comment and thought of this: you saw the post as a negative post and offered a positive suggestion: isn’t that interesting? Smile
