If I could, I would spend all nights in the fog. Until, of course, I see someone with a hook.

3 possible meanings of the words “Hanging Out”

Posted in General by Bes on Apr 05, 2006

Let’s hang out tonight!” I hear those words, and see the exclamation mark on a face, everyday; sometimes other people say that, and sometimes I say it. For different people, there are different meanings to the words “hanging out.” When I want to hang out with people, I want to talk, go around places, eat, and get involved in some activity like a movie or something that would round up a nice day of “hanging out.” I want to do something that makes everyone involved in the gathering have a good time, and it can happen in many ways Hanging out for me means something else, something that is fun, intelligent, and unique.

I do not like sitting in cars all night and talking about how good or bad someone looked, or how weird someone acted. Those talks can be started and finished in less than 3 minutes, and it’s something I do in front of people, specially when it is about them, in such a way that they appreciate the honest observation [hoho]. I have many different kinds of friends, almost every strange kind out there, both good and weird. Here are 3 different meanings of the words “hanging out” that friends might think is the most appropriate for them:

  1. Hanging out means using friends: Such friends consider hanging out to be simply a way to get what they want by acting as if they’re hanging out with someone. We will go to a restaurant or a Walmart, and after they got what they wanted, they would immediately want to call it a day. “Hmmm“, I always think to myself in such cases. These people need to be driven a 100 miles away and kicked out on the freeway.
  2. Hanging out means moving through friends: Another kind of friend is the one that calls and wants to desperately hang out with a friend. I arrive and they leave the friend they were with to hang out with me by saying “I’m going home, bye!“. I ask her [hint hint] if I interrupted them or something, and she would say “Nah, I was about to leave anyhow.” Then, she would receive another call and tell me that she has to go home by hitching a ride with someone else. Heh, Hah, Hoh, not sure how to laugh over that. I consider leaving someone, because of someone else for no important reason, to be the rudest thing you can do to someone when that someone knows it’s a lie. Stories of revenge and “getting back at them” will come soon. :p
  3. Hanging out means trying to learn what socializing means: Another friend is the one that calls you, wanting to desperately hang out with you. When they do, they don’t want to eat, they don’t want to talk, they don’t want to watch a movie, and they are not depressed either. You really don’t know what to do with such a friend. You ask what they want, and they always say “I don’t know.” If they’re females, you can’t stare at them quietly, back and forth that is, without feeling retarded. If they have a hidden agenda, oh well, not gonna happen. If they’re a guy, it will probably be only a one way stare in this part of California, and that’s retarded also. You try to talk about the weather, and they try to talk about nothing. It’s really weird, and when you’re calling it a night, they say “Wow, let’s hang out tomorrow too. I’ll call you! :D ” You can’t really say “HELL NO!” because such friends, hmmmm, simply don’t know how to socialize with you with ease and comfort, to put it in simple terms. They’re good people, in the end. I think. Hmmmmm.

How about you? Do you have any friends that you hang out with and they’re boring[LIKE ME, YAY!], annoying [HOPEFULLY NOT LIKE ME!], semi-quiet [LIKE ME, YAY!], pretty quiet {NOPE, NOT ME!], freakin’ quiet {NO WAY!], or too excited [LIKE ME, YAY!]? Do people consider “hanging out” differently than what you assume it to be? In the end, each and everyone of such friends has their own character, and as long as they don’t use you on purpose, they’re good friends, regardless of how happy they get hanging around someone who is excited, and also regardless of how bored I get hanging around someone who is, hmmm, annoying or boring.

Here is a picture, taken on Monday, April 3rd, 2006, of a Six Flags Magic Mountain billboard advertisement that I took near my home since I was talking about that very Six Flags promotion with Valerie before that. I haven’t been to Six Flags for a while now, and probably won’t be able to for a long time.

Hehe, wow, about the different meanings of "hanging out". Hmm… I’m either one that’s boring, or semi-quiet, depending who I’m "hanging out" with. LOL. But sometimes I’m just one of those who’s talkative, yet I would listen to the other person also, so 50/50? But yeah, like you, I hang out with just anybody who’s willing to hang out with me. LOL.

Anyways, wow, I need to go to Magic Mountain!! LOL…

  2. Bes :

Yeah, many times it depends on who you’re hanging out with. 50/50, that sounds cool. lol . And yes, I’m also willing to hang out with people who want to hang out. Many times, however, it results in a weird day because of the way people act and not act during a "hang out", lol.

Go to Magic Mountain, it’s cool!!

  3. JeSs :

i’m more to a quiet person if i dun really know who i’m hanging out with..but when it comes to my close buddies…i can go WILD n CRAZY  but these days..since i’ve moved to Canada…i’m more to a loner and a listener…wonder y…

  4. Bes :

Wow, a quiet person who can go WILD n CRAZY and also listens….that’s amazing. :p Hmmmm, changing completely depending on each person that one hangs out with seems to work well also.
You’re probably waiting for the right people to come along so you can go CRAZY n WILD again, no? :p

  5. Lisa :

I used to have a ‘friend’ I hated spending time with. She was self-centered and only talked about herself, so any excuse I could find to get away from her I’d take it. I don’t know why I never told her how much she annoyed me. I suppose I thought that would hurt her feelings, but I guess if she ever knew I hated spending time with her that would hurt much more…

  6. JeSs :

hahaha..that might be it..but i also think that i changed alot already and know i realize being quiet is waaayyy better for me…i dun have to worry bout my friends or anythinig..i can just enjoy my personal time…but i think this impact is because sum1 really change who i really m rite now but seriously NO REGRETS!!! hehehe…from wat i see Bes, i think u r more to a quiet type of person.. (maybe because i hv never seen a picture with u in it? *hint hint*)

  7. Noha :

lol, you just said it all!!

I had troubles though with hanging out these days.. all my friends are having exams.. :(

    I loved reading that!

  8. Bes :

Lisa — > Yes, many of them are self-centered and I hate that. lol @ any excuse; I should write a book on such excuses. :p

JeSs — > Yes, personal time is the main thing, even when you’re hanging out with friends; though, it’s good only if it doesn’t make you use others for your own fun and in turn they get burnt or annoyed or they don’t get anything in the end. lol @ No Regrets. :)
Heh. A quiet person you say…hmmm…… hint hint ;) [thinks about it....]

Noha — > Yeah, many people here had exams too, like myself/me/I. However, many friends don’t care if they get a 100% or a Z-minus [copyright], so they hang out anyhow and annoy others. :p
    Thanks. :D

  9. JeSs :
