New Police Story (2004) - starring Jackie Chan01.24.05

Media Type : DVD | Rating : 6.5 out of 10 | Watched on : January 22nd, 2005

Release Date : September 23rd, 2004 | New & Used DVD Price : $14 & above

Buy this DVD

Setting aside all traditional and the most recent movies he made, Jackie Chan returns to Hong Kong to make a movie named similar to his previous famous movie series “The Police Story” [which have been considered to be the greatest action movies ever by many]. Some consider this movie a sequel. However, this movie starts on its own and starts fresh with every character, and does not show any relation to the other movies. Thus, one can watch it without knowing anything about the previous movies. This movie is anything but a comedy, which has somehow become the so-called trademark of Jackie in the recent years in America and abroad. The movie does have a small sense of humor. However, the movie actually shows more violence than probably all of Jackie Chan’s recent movies in America combined, even though the violence is not extreme. This movie brings Jackie back to what originally set him to be a star; quality action movies with very good stories. The following paragraphs offer a little bit more in depth account of the movie. If you do not like to know the details of movies before you watch them, you should skip the next paragraph and go straight to 3rd paragraph and read onward from there.

Woman in the Dunes (1964) - by Hiroshi Teshigahara11.07.04

Media Type : Dvd | Rating : 8.0 out of 10 | Watched on : A sand-free day in September, 2004

Release Date : January 4, 2000 [originally released in 1964] | New & Used DVD Price : $24.25 & up

Buy this DVD

This movie is one of the most interesting movies I have seen in this life. Out since 1964, this movie will show you a new boundary [unique to this day] of what you can achieve in a superb movie without the use of any digital special effects. You will be so much dragged into the atmosphere set in the movie that it will not be until someone else tells you that you will realize the entire movie is in numerous shades of black and white; no other colors are to be found anywhere in this classic suspense movie given its time frame of production and release. The portrait of the sand, the landscape, and the characters in almost every form possible is almost flawless; you can almost feel how it would really be to be in such a position, and the way that the sand is shown to approach you from all sides in every way possible, you almost get a feeling that you have had a real experience just like the one shown in your own real life, simply because of the way everything is shown in vivid motion in the entire movie. This movie can be used as the prime example as to why colors other than shades of black and white are not necessary to create a masterpiece.

Napoleon Dynamite - by Jared Hess10.09.04

Media Type : Cinema/Theatre | Rating : 6.0 out of 10 | Watched on : A sunny day in Summer, 2004

Release Date : June 17rd, 2004 | New & Used DVD Price : Not known at time of this post

This movie is probably the quiet, surprising comedy “hit” among all teenagers in America. The movie revolves around a character called Napoleon. That is simply it. The whole movie keeps revolving around him, bringing into this revolving circle those around him momentarily, and then the focus shifts back to him. There is no single purpose of the whole story. The everyday life of Napoleon is shown very clearly, and simplistically. The actual way that Napoleon lives his life, thinks and deals with others is the main theme of the whole movie. This movie’s appeal lies mainly within teenagers, who view themselves close to Napoleon, or who understand the dynamics of his brain functions better than other age groups because of what they see everyday at school. Napoleon’s character may make you wonder from time to time as to whether he is acting or if he really is like “that” in real life, since his acting is superb, even though the acting is to convey the message that he is specially weird compared to others around him.

White Chicks - Shawn Wayans & Marlon Wayans07.07.04

This movie was supposed to be very funny, and it turned out to be very dry, and not funny overall. The story line is simple; two undercover cops change their style and have a plastic surgery-type makeup to look like girls. Sounds interesting, right? No, it is not, once you see that the makeup is as bad as it can get. Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans do not look anything close to looking like a girl, let alone mimic two beautiful girls. The plots in the movie, like kidnapping the girls, are so childish and superficial beyond normal belief, you will wonder if the director thought that the audience would be hypnotized when they watch this movie.

How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie - ISBN # 067172365007.05.04

How To Win Friends And Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Media Type : Book | Rating : 8.0 out of 10 | Read on : Sometime in 2000

Released : 1937, re-issued repeatedly & in 1990 | New & Used Book Price : $7.99 & $1.25

Buy this book

This is one of books I have that people borrow from me the most after I tell them a bit about what it is. This is also the book that I rarely get back on time from those people. Even though this book first came out in the late 1930’s, Dale Carnegie has written many books along with this one that pace through time and have held their heads throughout the decades. The book focuses on how to build your communication and behavior with people around you and thus make friends. By friends, Dale focuses on both the friends we know in life and also strangers who could be potential friends or customers, or people we deal with in everyday life. The book offers real examples from people who have adopted the changes from the classes by Dale and also from their own experiences.

The Fast and the Furious with Vin Diesel & Paul Walker07.03.04

Release Date : January 2nd, 2002 | New & Used DVD Price : $17.98 & $3.50

If you have seen 2 Fast 2 Furious, you may get a completely wrong impression of the original “The Fast and the Furious”. The original has Vin Diesel giving out a performance that adds character and depth to the whole movie. It is a story with the background of Vin Diesel as the main focus of Paul Walker, who is assigned as an under cover to bring Vin Diesel in. However, Paul notices that Vin is not just a criminal mastermind; he is also a family man with a lot of depth in his life and is not a bad person overall. The whole movie revolves around that, with some interesting surprises along the way.

Every once in a while you come across a movie that sends some spine-tingling shocks through your body when you least expect it. This movie comes very close to such shocks, telling us a story line that’s unique and very well told. The movie tells us the story of Paula Henning [the talented Franka Potente from the masterpiece Lola Rennt, otherwise known in America as Run Lola Run], who gets accepted to an Anatomy University and gets involved in her classes and practical experiments on deceased human bodies until she starts getting hints as to how these bodies were deceased.

Equilibrium with Christian Bale - Kurt Wimmer06.28.04

Media Type : DVD | Rating : 6.5 out of 10 | Watched on : May 7th, 2004

Release Date : October 18th, 2002 | New & Used DVD Price : $16.39 & $14.46

Equilibrium goes a little bit along the line of The Matrix, though it has its own unique story line overall. The movie has some very good acting by Christian Bale, and the story line is very interesting. Set in the very near future, the whole world is a fascist society where emotions are outlawed. Without emotions, every person acts the same, like a robot from an assembly line. People take doses of a medication periodically during the day to keep any emotional behavior or sentiments away from themselves. People found in breach of this daily routine are sentenced to death and either shot to death during arrests and raids or cremated alive after being arrested. I am surprised this movie did not make the same or even a close impact such as The Matrix; however, this movie is one of the top rated movies of 2002.

I saw this movie on June 19th, 2004. The movie centers around a European traveler who comes to New York for a purpose. Even though many people around the web have been calling him an immigrant, that is wrong. He is not an immigrant in the movie. He plans to go back to his country throughout the movie, back to his home. The story line is simple, yet a bit unique [based on a true story, though under different circumstances]; a traveler arrives at the JFK airport to find that he cannot be allowed admission to the country because his home country has been under a coupe and now the traveler cannot enter the United States. He is told to stay within the airport until the situation resolves. The whole movie is around this whole experience and how Tom Hanks copes with this situation and how he meets different people and how in the end, he gets what he came to do.
