A Vegetarian in Oklahoma City

In a region that features one of the largest livestock markets in the world, one may expect to find a relatively paltry selection of Oklahoma restaurants offering vegetarian and vegan options.

And with the major secondary industries being oil and petroleum, one may think it just as unlikely to find businesses there devoted to eco-friendly practices.

But both of these assumptions are untrue, as OKC features a healthy assortment of vegetarian and vegan restaurants devoted to sustainable eco-friendly business models.

Here are three of the best:

The great American food trends of 2013

Food and fashion are very similar. Both are made to look beautiful, both are most appreciated when the highest quality products are used, and both experience strong seasonal trends.

Just like clothing styles, food goes in and out of fashion. Many restaurants offer seasonal menus with locally sourced ingredients that naturally grow at that time of year, but certain foods are deemed ‘trendy’ and start popping up all over the best restaurants in the country.

So, what ingredients will you see making their way onto menus across the country this year?

Well, I’ll give you a hint: a beef casserole with horseradish makes this classic winter dish so 2013.

Yep, that’s right. Horseradish is one booming trend at the moment. This pale, knotted vegetable (which looks a lot like a tree root) is part of the mustard family and adds a peppery hit to a dish.

This is just one way to incorporate a fashionable ingredient into your everyday cooking.

Looking for ways to jazz up your dinner party recipes or reinvent your usual breakfast? Here are some other trends that are appearing this year:

The Real Reason I Want to Visit Florence

One of my favorite, yet corny movies of all time is “While You were Sleeping.” It is a romantic comedy with laughter and love. The main character, Lucy, played by Sandra Bullock has always dreamed of visiting Florence. She even has her passport ready, although she has never left the country, just in case she gets the opportunity to go to Florence. Ever since watching that movie I have dreamed of visiting Florence Italy.

But, the real reason I want to visit Florence is not just for the movie, it’s for the gelato! Did you know for many people Florence is the Gelato capital of the world? I have a passion for that creamy and decadent stuff, and I can only imagine how delicious and amazing it tastes directly from Florence!

With so many gelato shops in Florence, I can hardly choose just one. But if it came down to it these 3 shops are the ones I would venture out of my way to visit.

1) Gelateria La Carraia

Flying Solo? You Still Need Snacks.

Pilots get to live the dream – flying above the clouds from continent to continent, visiting incredible places that many people only get to dream about.

However, that does not mean that the time spent in the air passes in the blink of an eye. Every flight is basically a very long flight, almost inside the same chair for the entire duration of the flight.

There is still plenty of time in travel that requires entertainment and comfort, particularly when there are two pilots manning the cockpit.

If you are a pilot, new or old, there are some things that you should have in the cockpit with you:

Healthy snacks

Focus on snack items that will keep you alert and energized while you’re in the air. Fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts are a great option. Avoiding snacks that are high in sugar will help prevent an inevitable sugar crash.

That said, some treats in moderation, especially snacks like high quality dark chocolate can definitely improve the enjoyment of time in flight. Something as simple as having a snack to look forward to can break up any long hours in the cockpit.

Water with lemon

Pilot snacksPassengers are encouraged to stay well-hydrated while in flight, and the same rule applies to pilots. Water with lemon provides an additional level of hydration when consumed, and it tastes more refreshing.

Remaining hydrated will ensure that you are clear-headed and focused when you need to be in the cockpit.

Sleeping mask

When you co-pilot i taking over during a long flight and you have the opportunity to take a nap, improve the quality of rest by using a sleep mask. A pilot shop carries many items and gadgets designed to improve in-flight comfort for pilots (and often passengers as well). Another item that may improve physical comfort is a neck support or pillow.

Book or e-reader

When you are not the active one on duty, relaxing with a book can make travel time more enjoyable. Consider picking up something focused on the destination that you are traveling to in order to make the experience even more unique.

Everything else

Of course, there are additional items that pilots should have for their time on the ground in new locations. In order to take in the destinations, travel with a guide book. You can get a physical guide or an application for a smart phone or tablet that can help you identify the areas that you must visit, and learn more about the culture and environment of the country.

While you may not have a cell phone that works internationally to keep in touch with family and friends at home, you can get an international calling card, or simply find internet access that allows you to connect on one of your devices.

As a pilot, improving the quality of your time in travel can help you take more enjoyment from your job and your destination.

Plus, a relaxed, focused pilot is in a much better position to confront any safety issues that may occur.

Eating Well in Malaga

Malaga is one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations, and it’s easy to see why – situated on Spain’s stunning Costa del Sol, Malaga boasts spectacular weather and a rich cultural heritage. The historical centre of the city is a veritable “open museum” with over 3,000 years of cultural history on display. Between its vast cultural offerings and incredibly stunning seaside location, the city continues to attract a large population of jet setters, meaning that flights to Malaga are often easy to find.

Malaga offers some of Europe’s most delicious food, and to help travelers avoid overpriced mediocre meals, we have compiled a list of the three best restaurants in town:

Sip Champagne….in Champagne

Drinking champagne in France is an art, reflecting the joy and pleasure of combining fine dining with wine. The best way to drink champagne is of course cold, as the bubbly fizz sensation is intensified and the flavour is more pronounced.

Whenever there seems to be an uplifting reason to celebrate — be it a wedding, a job promotion, or a graduation — people pull out the chilled bottles of champagne, pop the cork, and pour out the bubbly to toast with friends and loved ones. Yet why limit the consumption of champagne to important moments like these? Why not instead celebrate the everyday, the beauty of life and living, at one’s own leisure — in one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world?

Day 27 – Tomato Bisque Soup & Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Today Katie asked me if I wanted to participate in the ritual called cooking. I grew up in a culture where cooking happened every 5 minutes, so it is not something that bores me. However, becoming vegetarian has made me, for a reason not fully known at the moment, respect food more and celebrate it more. So I helped Katie with cooking today, albeit very little.

She wanted to make Tomato Bisque Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwich. For me, anything with tomato used to be a very doubtful element in life. Too much of tomato for me used to be a big no no, and now I’m going to be having to eat Tomato soup? I was actually hoping the grilled cheese sandwich would turn out to be the life saver for me.

Is Tomato Bisque Soup good? I wonder!

Day 14 of Being Vegetarian – Boca Burgers Are Evil?

I got the Royal Red Robin Burger with Gardenburger instead of the beef patty. The waiter asked me “Are fries ok with that?” Yep, I wanted fries. However, I forgot to ask him to not include the bacon in the burger. So my burger came with the bacon, which I happily gave to Katie.

I have to say: the burger was DELICIOUS! I got A1 steak sauce to put onto the burger. It was fantastic. The picture you see in this entry is of me going to the Red Robin website and customizing the awesome Royal Red Burger with a Greenburger. I also left the bacon on there like it happened today. I think bacon always looks gross in real life and in the picture too.

Boca Burgers Are Meat Addiction Replacements

Royal Red Robin Burger - with accidental baconRoyal Red Robin Burger – with accidental bacon – as customized on RedRobin.com

There was an option to have Boca burger instead of a Gardenburger. The reason behind Boca burgers is simple: they taste a bit like meat and they are not meat. I had to think about the reasons why I would like a Boca replacement, and the only thing I could think about was the taste: the only reason I would want a Boca burger would be to eat something that almost tasted like meat. Sure, it may be a problem for many to give up meat taste, but I’m focusing on not caring about meat taste altogether.

For me, that is a bad mentality. Why would I want to have something that tastes like meat when in my mind I want to stop caring about eating meat forever? Simply stopping eating meat while still craving for meat smell or taste is not good in my view. Gardenburger it was, and it tasted good with the overall burger flavors and the A1 steak sauce on top of it.

Kashmir Spinach from Target is good!

Kashmir Spinach from Day 13 was actually very good. It had a lot of flavors, though they were mild flavors. I did enjoy every bite with the pita bread, so I can safely say that Kashmir Spinach even with very mild flavors tastes very good.

What do you think of Red Robin or Boca burgers in general? Thanks for reading? :)

I’ll start working on and releasing some books (digital and print) later this year hopefully focusing on different topics related to vegetarianism and life. My other site will focus on releasing some blogs, WordPress, websites, online and other related books (digital and print) and maybe videos.

Day 13 of Being Vegetarian – Flavor

[UPDATE: May 22nd, 2011 - 1:49pm] Found out that Katie got the Kashmir Spinach from Target and not Trader Joe’s. :O [/UPDATE]

Tasty Bites Kashmir Spinach – from Trader Joe’s Target. See more Vegetable Side Dishes

Today was supposed to be Rapture day. It’s around 9pm right now. While we noticed an earthquake around 7:01pm, there have been no sightings of anyone flying into the sky. No one has come forward claiming to be Jesus Christ. What I did see today, however, was me focusing a lot on food flavors.

The scariest thing about being a vegetarian for me has been the change and absence of flavor that I am used to. Meat of any kind tastes good only because of flavor; imagine eating sushi without any soy sauce and wasabi. Imagine eating a rare steak without any A1 steak sauce. Imagine eating any kind of meat without any kind of flavor. Imagine eating any vegetarian dish without any meat.

While many people do eat a lot of salads and vegetarian dishes that in my view have absolutely no taste and no flavor of any kind, I prefer having anything that has good flavor. Flavor, of course, translates to good, bade or strange tastes, depending on who is tasting it.

It is all about FLAVOR for me
