What are niches and subniches?

A niche is simply another word for specialization, or a specific category for something. For example, the newspaper industry is a category, and newspapers focusing on traffic in your city have a very specific niche, or specialization, in the broader, more general newspaper industry. Chris Garrett wrote an article on the concept of niches on Performancing back in 2005, which you may find interesting. You may also read a post by Anthony Baggett in which he talked about his site Antbag focusing on not focusing on a niche.

I am not sure if other people use the same word, but a “subniche” is a word I just came up with, while talking with Valerie, to express how someone can specialize within something that has already been assumed to be specialized in by other people.

By a subniche, I am simply referring to a subcategory within a broader category, which can be a niche. Many people consider a niche to be a very specific and a very targeted category of something. In my view, however, as the blogging world starts to mature further, we need to start focusing on targets within targets, and subcategories within categories. Thus, in my view, a subniche is a specific niche within a niche.

Personal blogging niche is the most crowded, yet one of the most underdeveloped blogging niches on the internet

The personal blogging arena is one of the most under-developed blogging niches on the internet. The personal blogging market has without much doubt become very crowded, but personal bloggers are not yet specializing in specific personal blogging subcategories. Sure, we can read all sorts of personal posts ranging from cats attacking their owners to bloggers using their keyboards to play baseball. However, most of such personal blog posts are random. They move from one topic to another, trying their best to be the perfect examples of a personal blog:

Since a personal life has a lot of random things happening every minute, why can personal blogs not focus on everything at the same time, all the time?

That very question is the reason there are too many general personal blogs on the internet today, since many people think that personal bloggers do not have to follow any rules or guidelines, and can simply post whatever they wish, whenever they wish and however they wish. That same question is also the reason personal blogs have yet to mature into more specific and specialized forms.

Many, if not most, personal blogs are too random

Majority of the personal blogs today are too general in their writing. Personal blogging is thought by many to have no clear focus because of the misunderstanding that personal blogs must treat personal lives as being too big and general. Personal bloggers have yet to stake claims in different types of personal blogs. If you look deep enough, you will realize that the personal blogging niche can be broken down into dozens, of not hundreds, of sub-topics or subniches that different personal bloggers can choose from to focus on.

Bes Z’s 7 Types of Personal Blogging Subniches

To give you an example of what I mean by personal blogging subniches, I present to you the following 7 subcategories of the main personal blogging niche that need to be developed and specialized further in my view. I came up with the different subniche names to help you remember what each subniche is all about.

1. Personal Emotions Blogging

   Emotional blogging, or Emo blogging, usually revolves around emotions. Personal Emotional Bloggers talk about emotions they feel daily due to different things. This is a very specific niche where people talk about emotions they feel daily due to all sorts of random things. This can be divided further into smaller categories, where different emotions are categorized based on things that trigger such emotions.

2. Personal Criticism Blogging

   This is the kind of personal blog where a blogger critically analyzes different things and probably criticizes things. Personal Criticism Bloggers may even be critical of their own actions, feelings and emotions, and will explain such criticisms in their criticizing posts. People in such a subniche may focus simply on criticizing things they run into in their daily lives, including their own selves.

3. Personal Positive/Negative Blogging

   These kinds of personal blogs focus on the positive and negative things that are seen in daily lives. Personal Positive/Negative Bloggers do not need to criticize things, though they can talk specifically about things they like and things they do not like. Again, this is a very specific niche that needs to be specialized in.

4. Personal Relationships blogging

   This can be a big separate category on its own. Many personal bloggers talk about relationships in their lives. Such relationships range from dating relationships to relationships with parents, and even business relationships. This subcategory of life, relationships with others, can be specialized in very easily by many personal bloggers who already post a lot about their analysis of the relationships they observe and the relationships they themselves run into daily. A Personal Relationships Blogger may even devote their entire blog to one specific relationship, like relationship with their child, a parent, a sibling, a spouse, or even a friendly relationship with a specific neighbor.

5. Personal Moods blogging

   Many people go through mood swings every hour of the day, and my recent series on moody signs of moody people may have shed some more light on the topic for you. Personal Moods Bloggers can specialize on moody blogging, where they either blog about their mood swings, or they blog because of their mood swings. I think this can be one of the most random type of blogging types out there, as such bloggers can change the entire focus of their blogs based on their moods.

   While many personal blogs today talk about random things because of feeling the need to write such things on specific days, you should know that Personal Moods Blogs will be different than the usual types of blogs we see today, as Personal Mood Blogs depend solely on the mood swings and revolve around the mood swings and talk about mood swings as being influential, whereas today’s blogs simply post random stuff because of feeling different everyday. A Personal Moods Blogger specifically outlines the mood swings that cause different blog posts to be written.

6. Personal Feelings Blogging

   Feelings blogs can usually revolved around 2 specific feelings: happy feelings and unhappy feelings. Personal bloggers can also specialize in confused feelings if they wish. Personal Feelings Bloggers can talk either about the things that made them happy unhappy, or confused, or the things that happened because of the bloggers feeling happy or unhappy, or even confused. The same way Personal Moods Bloggers rely on moods to run and revolve their blogs around and explain the moods behind their posts, Personal Feelings Bloggers run and revolve their blogs around feelings, and actually cite those feelings so that readers can know which happy, unhappy or even confusing feelings caused which actions or blog posts to be written, and why.

7. General/Random Personal Blogging

   This is the type of personal blogs you see today. General or Random Personal Bloggers can blog about anything, as they try to cover the concept of personal blogs in general and in depth while at the same time covering everything in their lives that they can. Thus, many of the personal bloggers you see today could continue to blog about personal things, since that would become a specialty of its own.

Those are 7 of the many other Personal Blogging Subniches that can be developed further by personal bloggers. Since the very concept of a personal daily life is probably unique to almost every blogger, the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating a subniche within the main personal blogging category.

Life is full of different things. Personal blogs should also specialize in different personal things instead of not specializing in anything.

The fact that life itself is full of random things when analyzed with care makes many personal bloggers forget the fact that life is divided into smaller parts, and that personal blogs can also be divided into smaller parts with each part dealing with a specific part of life. There is a lot of potential for specialization and categorization within the main personal blogging niche.

The personal blogging niche is far from being crowded, because of the possibilities of having personal blogging subniches. In fact, I think the personal blogging niche has the highest growth potential than any other type of blogging niche, because it focuses on life. Life itself probably has no boundaries other than death, and many would argue that even death is not a sign of a limitation of life. Why, then, should personal blogs focus on life with only one perspective, the general perspective, when personal blogs can instead focus on life in depth by talking about specific and different things?

Wait! What about people who think personal blogging is not a niche at all?!

Of course, many people still say that personal blogs are not niches at all, that they are too general or boring to have any kind of a niche. For such people, the very concept of having subniches within the personal blogging niche may have sounded weird throughout this article. Many people take the fact that some prominent bloggers got their blogging ideas from their personal blogging, like Darren Rowse talking about getting an idea for a niche from his personal blog, to assume that personal blogs are not niches. Personal blogs are niches. Making money from niches is a completely different topic and issue to pursue, and should not be confused with the concept of what niches are, and how and why personal blogs are niches.

I have been blogging for more than 6 years in different forms, so there are a few things I enjoy about blogging. So far, the money factor is not one of the top 5 things I enjoy about blogging, so I am happy to actually write what I want instead of writing something I do not want in order to earn money.

5 things I enjoy about blogging

Following is a list of 5 things I enjoy about blogging:

1. I meet other people.

   This is one of the best things, if not the best, that I enjoy about blogging. I meet many other people through my site. I have realized that blogging is an amazing way to develop real friendships, as it is really not that hard to convert an online friendship into an offline friendship. All we need is the will to experiment with different things to see which elements will result in better friendship bonds, as Ronald recently explained in his post “Discover Your Readers Through Goodwill.” The same concept applies to business relationships.

2. I find out what my own thoughts really mean.

   Many times I will start writing a post, thinking I am going to write something specific, and as I write, I realize that there were many things on my mind that I never paid much attention to. As I write an article, those other things come to light, and sometimes I will write about things in great details, even when I wanted to write about something in general. This is good, as I learn more about my own thoughts as I lay them down for practical use.

3. I find out more about the validity of my reasoning through blogging.

   As I write and edit my own writing on topics I otherwise rarely think about, I change my own opinion on a lot of things. I find out where my logic and reasoning works perfectly, and where I need to find out alternative ideas in order to come up with the answer.

4. I learn through comments.

   My blog is a lecture and a discussion board heading in two directions: I am telling you something through my writing and discussing it with you by allowing comments on this site. At the same time, you are telling me something through your comments and discussing it with me by taking the time to actually let me know about your views on certain topics. The guest blogging initiative should help me give you more power on this site.

5. I learn about other people through their blogs and comments.

   The same way you can find out more about people through what they say, you can gradually find out more about people through what they write. This is a really important point in my view, as I can slowly find out what people really think and what they really are through their writing, even if they try to portray a character that is different than what they really are.

Brief summary of Guest Blogging

Guest blogging, at its simplest, allows a blogger to have a guest write some posts on a certain topic. The guest blogger, in turn, assumes a writing position and writes on someone else’s blog. The blogger benefits by having someone else write posts in a different perspective, and by having more posts on a blog. The guest blogger benefits by having more people appreciate his or her writing, and by having more people find out about the guest blogger’s blog or writing. I think it is a win-win situation when done correctly.

What kind of writing is allowed on The Reasoner?

If you are interested in guest blogging here, please contact me directly or leave a comment below. As of right now, I would like to invite guest bloggers to write any kind of post that at least has a reason or a message in the post. Such a post should avoid philosophical lessons which are impractical; instead, the post should use philosophical reasons or lessons that can be applied in real life right now, this very instant. Results can come later, but they should come somehow. Also, the thoughts in such a post can be converted into action right away. If you have time, please read my About page to find out more about the kind of writing on this site. Consider the following advertisement-type summary I wrote for this site recently. It was written on a whim, so I expect a lot of things to sound really confusing:

This may be the strangest form of moodiness you may encounter. Some people feel the tendency to act rude around people who are already acting rude. If you are one of those people who feels their moods changing around moody people, chances are you are allowing the moody person to indirectly affect your moods. You may actually be a person who does not allow different things to affect your moods that may in turn affect your interaction with others, but for some reason, other moody people tend to set an alarm in your mind that results in you becoming a different person. Even if you feel moody at a moody person, you yourself are still a moody person, as the following example shows.

An example of people becoming moody on the freeway because of other moody drivers

Some people may even say that the traffic on Los Angeles freeways, specially the 5 freeway, causes more stress than actual murder in front of our eyes. I cannot blame such people. Imagine getting up at 6 in the morning and heading to work, and getting struck in traffic for literally 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours when you are heading back home in the evening, for a total of 4 hours of hitting the brakes and speeding up slowly. Even on my recent trip to Los Angeles and Orange County, I saw people hitting the steering wheels, throwing coffee cups out of their windows, and lashing out their anger even at children in cars who happen to just glance at them. Such frustration due to traffic actually makes such people change their moods.

Here is the funny part: some people will be very happy in stuck traffic until they see some other driver become moody because of the traffic. These happy people will be sitting in their cars, simply listening to music and trying to cope with the stress in a relaxed manner, when suddenly, because of seeing a driver hitting his or her steering wheel in anger, start getting upset themselves. They do not get upset because of traffic but because of seeing the moody person. No one knows for certain if such calm people get tense all of a sudden because they do not like seeing people get upset, but whatever the actual reason may be, such people actually start becoming moody at the same things as the other moody person. Slowly, as they become really moody, they start lashing out their moodiness at everyone and everything around them.

Becoming moody because of moody people still makes you a moody person

Among the several other reasons, there are two main reasons why some people start acting moody around moody people:

1. They portray the anger that they themselves see
2. They become upset as they do not like to see others getting upset

Either way, these people act moody to the person who is already moody, and as time passes, they also start acting moody around everyone else. You may notice this at parties sometimes: a happy person may simply see a person acting rude to everyone around them, and may in turn end up being quiet for the rest of the party also. They may not only act rude to the rude person because of their mentality that “a rude person deserves to feel rudeness from others“, but they may also starting acting weird around everyone else. This is the same as driving in a busy lane and getting moody because someone honks at you. A frustrated driver may honk at you because of your slow speed, and after a few minutes you may be honking at other people for various reasons, even if on regular days you never honk at anyone for any reason.

You are probably a moody person who acts moody because of other moody people. Now, it may seem as if being moody around moody people is a good thing. However, unless you know how to limit your moodiness only to the moody person in question, you will end up being moody to everyone. Also, even if you are able to act moody only around the other moody person in question, that does not mean you have to act moody. If you decide to be moody, you should realize that you are being moody, no matter what the reason.

This may be the most common sign of moodiness out there. Many people feel frustrated or agitated because of things like stress, hunger, lack of sleep, health, work pressure, relationship issues or even because of boredom, and they will let out such feelings on everything in the world. These people will act rude to everyone while they are feeling frustrated, and these people will also release their stress on anything that crosses their path.

Following is an example of someone I knew who displayed such a moodiness.

An example of someone being rude to everything in the universe because of frustration

One of my old classmates used to be obsessed with perfection. He had to write perfectly, and he had to dress perfectly. He had to talk perfectly, and he had to work and study perfectly. The only thing he did not do perfectly was to control his moods perfectly. If he made a mistake in any part of his life, say, at work or in his class work, he would act moody all day. He would not talk to people on purpose, hit the brakes really hard while driving, throw away food when he did not feel hungry instead of keeping the food for later, etc. He was frustrated at his inability to be perfect all the time.

The result was that people focused on that negative aspect more than the positive features in his character. He got and is still getting into many relationships, but they do not last for long. His inability to hide his moods or even communicate his frustration nicely to others results in people wanting to avoid him, as they do not know when he will start venting his frustrations on things and people around him in an extreme fashion.

Everyone feels frustrated over something, but not everyone acts moody by letting out that frustration on innocent victims

If you are a person who exhibits the above mood, you are not an evil person. You simply do not know how to release your stress in ways that does not affect others or even yourself. Hitting your car brakes hard because of feeling stress may be fine, but think about this: would you rather pay a huge bill to fix your brakes because you of not wanting to crush a squirrel, or would you rather pay hundreds of dollars on car repair bills simply because you felt moody that the breakfast you cooked tasted horrible? Such moods result in people feeling the need to take anger management classes, because in simple terms, you are simply being angry at everything if your frustrations about various things are affecting the way you treat everything around you in a negative fashion.

Some people not only feel comfortable hanging around people from their own ethnic background, they also feel uncomfortable running into people from different ethnicities. These people may not be racists, but they sure act rude around anyone not from their ethnic background. If you are such a person, you act moody simply because of some stereotype you may have about other ethnicities, or because you may feel your own ethnic background is superior to every other ethnicity on the planet. You allow such a mentality to affect your mood, which in turn controls your behavior and makes you act rude around people from different backgrounds.

Following is am example where I saw many different ethnicities hating each other for no reason other than everyone being from a different ethnicity.

Example of students acting moody because of not liking other ethnicities

In my first Japanese language class, I noticed many people hanging around people from their own ethnic background, and at the same time, acting rude around everyone else. Even if everyone could speak English, these people only acted nice around people from their own culture, and came close to other people only when they needed something. These people were a hybrid of many other moody people that I have talked about so far, including the moody person who acts nice only when something is needed.

It did not matter if the above people were Europeans, Asians, Africans, Americans, or something/someone else; these people did not want to do anything with people from different background. I see such a thing happening in different ethnic communities almost everyday: people hanging out with their own ethnic people while being rude to all innocent people simply because of the ethnic factor. Such rudeness is a sign of moodiness that results from feeling uncomfortable because of stereotypes related to specific ethnicities, and such mood swings can result in one turning into a real racist individual.

Such ethnically moody people are also indirectly being racists

Racism and discrimination usually starts with mood swings. Some people act rude because they cannot stand the fact that a person from a different background may be comfortable enough to interact with them. I have noticed a lot of parents actually telling their kids not to talk to strangers when the kids talk to people from different ethnic backgrounds. However, these same parents, right on the same spot, have no issues with their children talking to strangers from their own ethnic background. These parents are actually creating moody little people, who will in turn grow up to swing their moods at innocent people and end up hurting others through racism and discrimination. Hanging around a specific ethnicity is one thing, but discriminating against any ethnicity is simply a case of either racism or discrimination.

You probably notice this sign every single day. Some people judge, discriminate, disagree or hate other people simply because those other people do not share the same political beliefs as them. It is like a mind controlling religion, with people being taught to hate everyone who is not affiliated with a certain agenda. It is funny how political parties talk about uniting people within a country under one political party, but rarely talk about uniting people from different parties under one country, or about uniting all people from the world under one planet. Following general example shows how such people act rude when they hear something related to politics that they have strong feelings about. Throughout this post, when I say politics, I will be implying government politics.

A general example of people being rude to others because of politics

You can see these people at bars and parties almost everywhere. They may not even know you, but they will start arguing with you, devoting their entire energy in life to prove that you are wrong and that your political views are wrong. You may not even be talking about other political parties but some good things about something related to the general idea of politics, and these people will jump into your conversations and do their best to disagree with you instead of disagreeing with the topic.

Such people believe more in politicians than their own spouses. They are willing to defend a political idea, created by the political party they love, at the cost of friendships and relationships. An innocent victim may be talking issues like conservatism, liberalism, green party, global warming, war, gun control or something else, and they will end up being insulted or ridiculed in public by a politically moody person who does not know how to control his or her moods when it comes to hanging around people who may have different political views.

A politically moody person values politics over respect for others

In my view, such people allow their strong feelings for their political beliefs to manipulate their respect for other people. The same way as with a few other types of moody people, including religiously moody people, politically moody people do not know how to co-exist with people having different views about different things in this world. They probably want everyone to have the same exact ideas. These types of people will also sometimes discriminate others outside of parties simply because of their own obsession with politics, and because of their inability to accept the fact that someone else may have a different view about something. Such politically moody people even get upset because someone may not have any political views about something.

Having thoughts that everyone should have the same exact thoughts is better than actually harassing and being rude to innocent people simply because they say something about politics that you yourself do not believe in. You are simply a moody person who allows political views to control your moods and in turn allow your moods to control your interactions with other people. You probably need to grow up, as everyday people will say a dozen things that you would not believe in. That does not mean you can become moody and start being rude or discriminatory to those people. You are probably only dependable to the political party you believe in; everyone else should stay away from you, as you value political ideas more than respect for life, and probably life itself.

Vera suggested this sign as she also experiences this from time to time. You may be a moody person if you say different things from time to time to other people, and then regularly not stand by what you said. You tell people things you will either do or plan to do, and other people start doing things also because of what you say. Later on, you just change your mind for no good reason, and other people end up wasting their time and thus avoiding you later on as you are simply a person who says things without meaning them. Take a look at the following example, where I briefly describe a situation I go through every week where I meet such moody people.

An example of how some people ask me to be part of online projects when they really aren’t serious

I get at least 2 online proposals every week by people who ask me to either guest blog or be part of a writing project somewhere. Recently, I got an online proposal to help someone work on a book about blogs. I agreed, since I am myself writing a book on blogs. I worked on ideas and writing styles for her book for almost 3 weeks, putting work for my own book aside. Each week, I would e-mail her some updates. Three weeks later, after I had done a lot of work, I got an e-mail from her saying something along the lines of “Wow, you have done a lot, I was traveling and do not know if I may be able to start this book this year. I will keep you updated! Thanks.” Here is the funny thing: she had asked me to help her before as she was “desperate“, and told me to start right away if I could. After I did all the work, not only had she not done anything, she was not even serious about writing a book yet.

You may be allowing either happy or negative moods to affect your commitment to what you say

Regardless of the exact reason that makes you not stick by what you say, you are simply not a dependable person. You may be having negative mood swings when you change your mind. For example, you might wake up and find something really unpleasant in your home, and allow that unpleasant feeling to change your mind and plans completely, even if you made sure other people plan their parts of life around your plans. That makes you a person who lets emotions take over your actions and interactions with others completely.

Also, you might be having positive mood swings when you plan things. For example, you might feel happy and excited about something, and thus may start thinking positively too much without planning things. Along the way, you may start telling other people things that later, after your happy mood swing has gone away, you simply forget or do not stand by. This results in people wondering if you are simply a liar or a person who can never be trusted.

Forgetting to do something can be ok, but changing your mind simply because of your moods is a sign that you are not good at interacting with others, and are letting your moods take over your ability to decide on things. Such a kind of moodiness makes you untrustworthy, unfortunately, since other people realize that in the long run you say things without actually meaning them.

You may be a moody person if you act nicely only around publicly known rich and prominent people, while acting rude on purpose around other people simply because of the fact that those other people are not rich or do not talk about ways to make money. You may think that being nice only to prominent people is the same as looking up to a role model. It is not the same thing. Looking up to people does not mean you have to be rude to innocent people you barely know, like the people who do not blog about ways to make money. Following is a simple example of how such people are simply moody because of their own frustration of not knowing how to communicate effectively with everyone.

Example of the world of online blogging and commenting where you act nice only on prominent blogs and are responsive only to comments by prominent bloggers

You may see this online all the time. Many bloggers and commentors will go around commenting only on blogs run by really rich or really famous bloggers who talk about ways to make money. At the same time, these bloggers and commentors will either ignore or act rude towards everyone else who is not so rich or famous. The way these people act rude is by disagreeing and making the not so prominent or not so rich people look bad, not replying to their e-mails or comments in a nice way, or even by ignoring them completely, while at the same time treating any comment, blog post or e-mail by a prominent blogger with extreme happiness and respect. These people simply do not treat all online people equally.

Sucking up to rich and prominent people may be fine, but don’t pass on your rudeness and moodiness onto other innocent people

You are simply a moody person who does not know how to act around people who do not talk about the thing you are obsessed about: money. Online, you value five comments or e-mails consisting of only “hi” by rich bloggers more than 10 detailed, informative and useful comments or e-mails by everyone else. The mere fact that you cut off ties with people who do not claim to make a lot of money while shielding the rich and prominent people from your rude character means you have personal issues, and you are venting your inner frustration on innocent people who, in your view, are not out there trying to make you money. That is pure moodiness mixed with some kind of a psychological disturbance within you, in my view.

I was talking on the phone with a friend when she mentioned the Blacksburg shooting. 33 people died, with 1 of them shooting the other 32. It was a shock; the same shock I felt when I read every week how homeless children are dying everyday because of hunger. It was a little bit less shocking than seeing bodies floating in the rivers after hurricanes, or seeing bodies scattered after an explosion. It was, regardless of the intensity, a shock, that someone else out there had mustered up some unknown thoughts and gone after other people. I thought of the people who died in the shooting, and I wondered why this shooter would kill all these people and then kill himself. I also wondered about the families of the victims, and the family of the shooter. What was the reason behind all of this?

Then Valerie told me that she noticed in her WordPress dashboard a link to a post by Lorelle that talked about the killings. She felt that it was strange that a dashboard (that was supposed to only talk about WordPress) was now linking to a post related to the Virginia Tech shootings. The post by Lorelle basically advocated a site called One Day Blog Silence, which wanted everyone to observe April 30th as a day to be silent in order to remember the people who died in that shooting recently. Valerie, as a response to the very site that advocated such a stand, posted “Silence is not the answer.” Later that day, I ran into an article by Vivien titled “Can Silence Say More Than A Thousand Words“, which prompted me to write out more on the topic.

Basically, Lorelle was telling everyone to observe a Day of Silence on April 30th. She was telling people to follow what the site, OneDayBlogSilence.com, was telling people to do: to be silent for one day in memory of those who died.

Take real action instead of being silent

In my view, if someone wants to do something, they should write letters of support to the people in Virginia, especially to the families of those who died. Can you imagine the pathetic stance many people are taking right now? Setting up that site, One Day of Blog Silence, sounds pathetic unless it is run by the relatives of those who died. What will such a site do? What can such a site do? Why not make sure the families feel better by writing them letters or going to visit them and showing them in person that you care?

Why is WordPress allowing personal posts to appear in the WP Dashboard?

Also, why would WordPress allow this personal opinion over the deaths of people to be posted on Planet Wordpress, which gets sent to hundreds of thousands of WordPress admin panels right away? Did we install WordPress to get WordPress news, or did we install the software to read personal opinions about life and death? Does this mean WordPress admins will promote any post by Lorelle to the millions of WordPress websites out there? Really? Are you telling me that anything that is emotional or related to death will be allowed to go into the admin because someone wrote it?

People will be having fun on One Day of Blog Silence

A day of silence? Can you imagine the number of people who are going to be having fun in the offline world while simply not posting in the online world? Why not write a letter yourself to the affected families? Why can’t we create a mentality where we can be happy everyday, and when we find out that anyone died, whether it was due to murder or due to hunger, we feel sad and immediately we resolve to do even more to help humanity if we want to. I can bet a bit that more than a 10 homeless people died today alone is almost every city we live in, yet that did not get broadcast in the news, and thus most people did not get hyper about those deaths.

I will tell you something: I can guarantee you that many posters, including the site linked above, have not even taken the trouble to find out the sexes, ages or even about the character of the people who died unless they came across the CNN article by accident. It is also surprising to see how most do not even talk about the injured people, or about the family of the shooter himself.

Blogosphere is not in deep mourning. Only people taking real action are in deep mourning.

Lorelle said the blogosphere is in deep mourning. I will say that’s not the case. Just because someone dies and I say “the world is sad today” does not mean it is. Almost every commentor to her post who has a blog, probably had lots of fun within an hour of reading that entry and expressing sorrow. Why? Because becoming hyper all of a sudden over a tragedy that is made public over the news does not mean we actually want to do something about the issue. It simply means that we can get emotional and feel ethical when the news wants us to. So I will say this:

“The Blogosphere is posting about it, but it is not in mourning. It is simply news for most online people.”

I get scared of the trends that get started because of the news. More than 500 homeless people died this very day in this country, and they were all innocent. Do we cry about them? No. Yet trends like “Silence Day” are started when the news gets wind of 33 deaths and wants to juice out as much information as possible before moving on to something new?

Is the art of appealing to emotion being used to manipulate us into observing One Day of Blog Silence?

Also, the 2nd post by Lorelle really shocked me. As a friend of mine said, the post used the tactic of appealing to emotion. Right after the first post supporting OneDayBlogSilence, the post that followed talked about the deaths in Israel. Is that post trying to bring out our emotions about the 6 million people who died at the hands of an evil dictator and connect it to Seung-hui Cho, the person who killed the 32 people at Virginia Tech, and the 32 people who died? Is that post comparing the Holocaust to the dead Virginia Tech students? The Holocaust post has nothing to do with what happened, so I have no idea why it would be connected and posted right next to the One Day of Blog Silence post.

I will mail letters ONLY to prove a point. I will then go live my life.

You know what I will do? I am going to start finding addresses of the people whose relatives died. If I cannot find those addresses, I am going to find different the Blacksburg city counsel addresses and different legal addresses for Virginia Tech.

On April 30th and any other “related” day that people are planning without any real thinking, I am going to go to the post office and mail some letters of support and this very post [previously a comment] to the families of those affected. I will also tell those families what I think, how I feel sad, and how I have already moved on my life, and how I would love for them to start living their lives also without forgetting their loved ones.

In the past, I have mailed some letters to people I knew and also people I found out about through other people, whenever I could. If it’s a media blaze like this, one of the reasons I must send letters is to not be a hypocrite and tell others “Silence day is stupid” and not do anything myself. I have counseled and done more for people with all sorts of issues before. Rape, kidnapping, negligence during childhood, and even people from war torn countries and thus people experiencing trauma due to seeing their own families murdered before them. They can choose to remain silent, fine, since they want to forget and move on. But if I want to react to such things, I cannot say “I have decided I am going to observe a day of silence.” I have seen people dying in front of my own eyes because of growing up in war ridden countries, and I have even seen dead bodies piling up less than 12 months ago. Does that mean anything I do is automatically justified? Does that mean I have the right to call for silence illogically simply because I have seen, heard, felt or experienced things?

One Day of Silence may work for you

Some people may like to be silent and that is fine, since they are at least not hurting other people directly. However, I don’t like the concept, as I have been hearing it in vain all my life. Besides, why would I want to follow a trend of being silent when everyday in our own cities hundreds of innocent people are dying due to various reasons? If you try telling me in person that you are sorry about my losses and that you will remain silent to show respect, I will make sure you hear what I have to say over such an idea. And what I have to say won’t be pleasant.

Take some action that helps, or be silent in a way that actually helps

Please do something, or don’t do anything, and if you want to be silent, do it in a way that amounts to something useful. The current form of “silence” that is being promoted makes no sense other than to promote another internet meme that does nothing. When someone in your family dies, I will e-mail you a letter saying “I will offer a Sunday as a day of silence by not posting that day, and by going about my life having already forgotten about your grievances.” Let us see how you feel then.

Yes, silence does sometime make more difference than real action. However, being silent works only when it can be effective. Being silent when someone’s family member dies will not do anything. This is death, not some breakup in a relationship where being silent will comfort a person for a few minutes before you can run off to the movies and forget about everything and find new people to date. This is not a Memoriam; this is just an internet meme.

Doing things just for awareness is just a fad. Do things to make a different and do things to actually see things changing!

Do this: write an actual letter to those families or to their cities and tell them that the incident made you feel sad even for a while before you move on with your life. This is life; you have to remember and care forever. That means if one incident really affected you, don’t just observe a day of silence and forget about it. Keep in touch with that family and show them you are truly sorry about their loss.

If you simply feel sad only when the news talks about it, then I truly for sorry for those that depend on you. Next week the news story will change. Then what? Another day of silence to observe?

4 : You act moody around all people who do not share the same religious views as yourself.

You are the 4th type of moody person if you love interacting with Christian or Muslim or Jewish or other religious people that you do not even know personally, and at the same exact time, you act rude to people who do not share the same religious beliefs as you. Your rudeness and quietness are not signs of professionalism; they are signs of moodiness that is springing towards extremism, where someone innocent who has done you no direct or indirect harm is getting discriminated by you. You are simply a moody religious person who does not know how to interact with others. Take a look at the following example, which shows you how being obsessed with religion, even indirectly, can not only make you moody, but also make you hurt others.

Example of a religious girl being moody because of being obsessed with religion

I will keep the name of the specific religion out of this example, as I do not want to bash any specific religion. Someone I counseled long time ago told me that she was in a happy marriage with a husband and even had a 3 year old daughter when she converted to another religion. Because of her love for that new religion, she would act upset and distant around her family members all the time. In the end, she started asking her family members to convert also. The result? A divorce, and the husband kept the daughter.

She married again and now has a new family. However, she “wonders” if she made a mistake, throwing the lives of her husband and daughter, and the rest of her family, into chaos and turmoil simply because she could not co-exist with people who had different religious views.

Religion may make you moody, but don’t pass that moodiness onto innocent people

I used a very short and extreme example to show the mentality of a religiously moody person. It all started from being moody around people who had different religious beliefs, and ended up hurting everyone. While you may not be going around divorcing people, you may, however, be going around doing other things, like ignoring posts by people not having the same religious views, or even ignoring other innocent people in real life because of your own religion. Such a behavior is a sign of moodiness, which can result in discrimination because of religion later on.

Just like vodka and margarita mixed together makes many people more drunk, you mix your religious moods with your idea that everyone should have the same religion, in order to become the perfect living organism in the universe: The Moody Religious Person [TMRP]. Did I just compare religion with alcohol? Yes, I did. Is that going to make you TMRP? I hope not. If it does, then you need to breathe slowly and communicate with me. Let me know what made you moody. 3 : You act rude only around people of a certain sex

If you act rude around a certain sex all the time, you may be a moody person on your way to being a person who discriminates. Because of some past experience, you are being moody and rude to all the people of that specific sex. Consider the following examples that will show why such a behavior makes you a moody person, and why such a thing can turn you into a person who discriminates.

How bad relationships caused a guy and a girl to hate everyone from the opposite sex

• Moody to all guys: I once helped a friend get out of an abusive relationship where the abuse had resulted in a miscarriage and several permanent scars on her body. She does not even feel comfortable shaking hands with guys anymore. Even though she likes hanging out with me, she will think twice before wanting to even hug or something. She thinks every guy [probably except me] is out to torture and then abuse women in relationships.
• Moody to all females and relationship: One of my previous housemates had a huge crush on one of his classmates for more than a year. Finally, one day, while drinking with her and her friends, he hinted openly that he would love to date her. The girl just responded with a “HAHA” and carried on with another topic, resulting in everyone laughing at the guy. Even though it was not intended as an insult, he took it to heart. From that day onward, he looked at girls as being “slutty” sex objects, and every relationship as either a one-day or even a one-week stand.

Past experiences can make you so moody, you might start discriminating against a specific sex

In my view, both of the above cases are examples of allowing your past to make you moody, and to allow such moodiness to affect and control your life. That is a disability, unfortunately, as it may result in you discriminating against innocent people. Bad experiences can cause people to feel moody around some people, but their own actions result in them hating and discriminating innocent people. In my view, you should avoid having relationships with such people unless you are willing to help them with their moodiness. Why? Because they are confused and unstable in at least the arena and concept of relationships, and they need serious help.
