A Series of Blamable Events03.27.07

Here is what happened today from around 5 am in Bay Area until around 11 pm in Orange County and Los Angeles. This should give you an idea about 2 different ways to look at certain days.

I woke up this morning around 5 am to get ready to head for the airport. I printed a few things on the computer and then got a ride with a friend. We left the house about 15 minutes late and got stuck in traffic. Once at the airport, the plane left about 30 minutes later because the cleaning crew was taking some time to clean the plane, and maybe also because the pilot was walking around enjoying the terminal.

Update - traveling for around 5 days03.27.07

[update]This post was supposed to go live earlier. However, either due to some online issues or because of something I overlooked, a few posts along with this one were not published. I apologize for any inconvenience.[/update]

I will be traveling again soon to Southern California for some personal reasons and also to help a friends’ company jump onto the blogging platform. As is usual when I travel, I will probably not be able to respond to emails within 24 hours. The posting schedule should hopefully not be affected beyond today. I should be back by either this Friday night or this Monday evening. If you are in or around Southern California, please contact me if you would like to meet. :)

If you have any questions or would like to contact me, please do so via any of the contact methods on my “Contact” page.

Thank you so much for your support all this time. I really appreciate it. :)

Avoid telling people they are wrong03.24.07

One of the biggest mistakes I see people making everyday is to tell someone during an argument: “You are wrong.” Those three words, when combined, have a very scary effect on people. The word “You” makes a statement very personal. The word “are” makes it sound like there is no way to argue about it. The final word is like a final blow in an action movie: “wrong” says that someone is stupid enough to not be right, since that word is coming out of someone else’s mouth with so much intensity.

Many people do not like to be told what to do, let alone be told that they are wrong. Even if a person is wrong, he/she becomes defensive because of the natural instinct of not wanting to look like a fool in front of others. That is what you make someone feel or look like, a fool, when you tell them that they are wrong so clearly. Avoid telling others they are wrong. Focus on other things instead to make your point.

Announcing my participation in the Reader Appreciation Week - April 9-13, 200703.24.07

I will be one of the the Reader Appreciation Week (RAW) Participants. You can also be a participant at any time if you wish. The RAW is being held from April 9th to April 13th, 2007. I recently announced the Reader Appreciation Project that promotes reader appreciation, and the RAW for April of 2007 is a good way to start spreading the concept a bit further.

Thought: on donating to charity to get more blog readers and customers03.22.07

The following post is written to all bloggers who talk about donating to charity based on the number of comments they get, the number of MyBlogLog members they get, or anything else that means more readers or money for them or their blogs.

I am seeing a continuing trend on a few blogs where many bloggers are talking more and more about how they want to donate to charity. These bloggers say that they will donate something for every comment they get on their site. While this may seem like a nice thing to do, think about this: if your own life, or the life of your father, mother, daughter, son, sister or brother, depended on the number of comments on your site, would you feel good about it? Would you not wonder why your life depends on the number of comments a rich person gets?

Do you donate because it is a good thing, or do you donate to get more blog traffic and comments?

Thought: On John Chow ranking higher on Google than ProBlogger03.21.07

John Chow recently announced that his site JohnChow.com site ranked higher on Google than ProBlogger when searching for the words “Make Money Online.” Most people on John’s site are excited over the results, since it means that using anchor text efficiently helps in search engine ranking. For me, here is the most important point that is missing from the post and the comments: would visiting John’s site actually give me more useful information than ProBlogger when it comes to making money online?

Working hard to appear before another site on search engines can be good, though that also means that you are promising a reader that your site also delivers more value than the other site.

Avoid following people’s advice without thinking yourself03.20.07

We do it almost daily. We ask others for advice, both online and offline. While asking others for advice is a good thing, you should analyze each advice before you act upon it. Just because some famous person recommends something does not mean you should follow that recommendation. Anyone can try to give you advice; you have to see whether or not the advice in question applies to your unique self and situation.

Thought: On looking at mass emails as a group and as an individual03.19.07

I received an e-mail yesterday from Broc Copeland in which he told me that my readers may be interested in a MyBlogLog Giveaway. It is a contest where people who subscribe to Broc’s MyBlogLog community get added to a contest to win two nice printers. Browsing his site, I found out that he had also e-mailed a lot of other bloggers about the same contest. I thought of a question then: while mass e-mailing can be intruding or even a form of spam, when is mass e-mailing a good thing, and when is it a bad thing?

Announcing Reader Appreciation Project03.18.07

Because of your support in everything I wrote, even if you disagreed with some things, I am happy to announce a new project : Reader Appreciation Project (RA Project). The Reader Appreciation Project intends to do one thing: appreciate people more. It will hopefully help us appreciate our blog readers more. Since all bloggers are also readers of their own comments, this should help everyone. You can also read what the RA Project is all about.

Thought: On Online Copyright Laws03.18.07

I face one issue regularly while blogging: how to treat online content created by other people, and how to let others treat online content created by me. Copying and pasting written content online is easy, so sometimes it is tempting to use someone else’s writing in your own. While giving credit to other people is a good idea, does giving credit to someone automatically justify the use of other people’s content?

I recently saw an article by Daniel that listed 12 things you should know about copying and using things online. That article made me realize that having good intentions alone does not make people who copy with good intentions innocent.

Site Update : No Moderation of Comments - v 0.9503.18.07

Here is a small update related to leaving comments. I have decided to completely remove moderation of comments on this site. From now on, whether you are commenting for the first time or the 50th time, your comment will be published right away without any moderation or approval from me. I somehow think that making readers wait before their comments are published on my site is something I should avoid. Spam should be taken care of automatically, by the way. If spam does manage to get through, I should know about it when I check the site.

Slow down when facing problems achieving your blogging goals03.17.07

If you face issues while trying to achieve some goals, you may be tempted to give up. What I would suggest before you give up, or before you even think of trying harder, is to take a small step back and see why things are not going smoothly. You can do this by observing yourself, and by observing both people who are successful and people who are not successful at the same goals you are pursuing. When you run into problems, continue your efforts at a slower pace in order to figure out why you are facing problems.

Why Non-Intrusive Ads give you more freedom to avoid ads03.16.07

With so many shopping places to chose from, no wonder more and more companies are getting aggressive in placing their ads in different places. Because these ads are everywhere, people have started to avoid them. The companies have in turn become even more aggressive in their advertising techniques, which results in people who hate ads to run farther away. What the ad companies need to realize is that showing ads everywhere does not work, even if those ads are creative. Why? Because most ads are intrusive and waste people’s time. Non-intrusive ads are better at marketing a product or a service.
