Are your reactions based on how others react?02.28.07

I saw two men fighting for some unknown reason in the Costco parking lot yesterday. Some people were running away from them, yelling “Security!!” while others watched from a distance. People who were watching from some distance would start walking further away whenever they saw people near the fight stepping back a bit. That exact moment made me realize something: the only reason most people were trying to get away from the fight was because they saw other people around them doing the same thing.

Thought: On sticking to the point in your posts02.27.07

Last week Daniel suggested that blog writers should stick to the point in their posts. While I agree with the point, I realize that sometimes it is hard to figure out what to share and what to avoid writing in posts. Things you write in your posts may be extremely important to you, but your readers may find them boring. So what should you do?

Making it easy to allow peeping into your public past02.26.07

When you meet someone new, the most important things you usually want to know about them is not about their present but their past. You want to know their name, realize their gender, find out their habits and even know their current occupation or education; all these things were decided long time ago. People will usually tend to inquire about your past, your previous actions and your background. You can make it easy if you want for others to look into your public past.

Retiring online and offline is not for me02.25.07

If you had a choice to spend most of your life working hard and not being happy, while hoping for very happy and enjoyable last few days of life, would you choose it? The first thought that comes to my mind regarding this is about the lives spent being unhappy and at the same time being focussed for almost 60 years in order to be financially independent during retirement. I would not want to lead such a life, and I am not going to.

Helping someone today did not make me happy02.24.07

Help others“, I hear that often. People usually think that helping others is a good thing because one feels happy afterwards. I recently considered a mistake an investment by making someone happy, which involved helping a girl who gave me a haircut. I felt good being nice to that haircut girl. Today at a supermarket I helped someone who needed 50 cents to make a phone call. However, I did not feel happy about it. In fact, I almost felt nothing.

Realizing that earthquakes can hit your blog is good02.23.07

I was talking to Ronald around 3:45 pm today when my entire building started shaking. It was a minor earthquake that shook Berkeley for about 3 seconds before moving onto nearby cities. Ronald said that I should expect such things because of being in the San Francisco area, and that got me thinking: disasters and unexpected events can happen to your website at anytime, and if you realize that, you will panic less and fix any damage due to such disasters faster.

This concept can be applied to the offline world too. Planning and starting your tasks early can help reduce stress and avoid problems you may face later on.

Why you should focus on as few goals as possible02.19.07

People do different things in order to achieve different results. Many of us usually make goals every now and then in order to achieve certain results. Even though aiming for certain results is a wonderful thing, you should avoid aiming for a lot of results at once. Doing so would affect the important goals you should be solely focusing on. Trying to achieve everything at the same time will probably result in low quality results for most of your goals. Aiming for fewer and more specific goals will result in better results and a higher level of achievement.

Is it ever ok to treat you like a business transaction instead of a human being?02.18.07

Every day, many people prefer to be be treated like human beings rather than business transactions. However, it is sometimes better to be treated like a customer instead of a human being in certain business relationships. Emotional satisfaction develops for participants of many business deals which results in such people expecting good treatment in addition to getting a good business deal. While such expectations are good and recommended, you should make sure that your emotional satisfaction, not related to the specific contents of a business deal, does not become the deciding factor when considering entering a business deal.
