Narrow-minded business approach of wanting either a lot of money, or no money08.29.06

I took my car to an authorized Honda service center to get an oil change around 5 pm today. There weren’t that many customers there, and the only cars that were there were already being looked after. The staff that wasn’t looking at the cars was either doing paperwork or sitting around. I told one of the staff members that I was there for an oil change. He said it was too late for an oil change, since any oil change after 3 pm required an appointment. He further said that all the people who specialized in oil change had left for the day. He did, however, have people who specialized in the 30K service, which was “only $130 including tax.” Oil change costs only $19.95 these days at most Honda dealerships, so he further explained that the $130 was a bargain as that would include the oil change and a host load of other tuneups.

Magazines in a typical hospital waiting room08.28.06

Here I am, sitting in the waiting room. This room looks exactly like every other waiting room in any other hospital. There are a few chairs, several magazines, and a small window through which one can talk to the nurses and staff. This room has a coffee machine also, though. That’s weird; why would a patient need to drink coffee before they see a doctor? I’ve never seen a coffee machine in a Gynecology doctors’ waiting room before. Doesn’t matter, as I’m not going to have coffee anyhow. What the heck am I doing here? I don’t know, though I know I’m stuck for a while. That’s ok, let’s read some magazines.

Hiding movies to create demand for their remakes08.25.06

The brilliant Korean movie “OldBoy” used to be carried by both Blockbuster and Amazon.com. However, I’ve started to see many Blockbuster locations discard that title from their inventory. I recently asked a few employees at a few BlockBuster stores for reasons behind such a move, and was told that the decision to remove titles from inventory depended on the demand for the movie and the contract with the companies that market the movie. The reason for not having a movie like OldBoy available at Blockbuster anymore could also be because of that fact that Hollywood is remaking the movie into an English version slated to be released in 2008. More and more foreign movies are being taken off the shelfs quietly at big movie chain stores like Blockbuster and online stores like Amazon, in order to make way and create more demand for the Hollywood remakes.

Offering alternatives to customers instead of turning them away08.24.06

Businesses have to develop an attitude where not only they try to sell a product, but they also try to keep in mind that they are trying to fulfill a need or a want of a customer. With that mentality, businesses can train their employees and customize their products and have a broader sense of how to offer products to customers even if the products differ slightly that the exact requirements specified by customers. Thus, instead of saying “We don’t have that, sorry“, businesses can say “We have something similar to what you need.

3 questions to think about before forwarding chain emails08.23.06

Many people forward me different kinds of emails everyday. These emails range from topics like cancer patients needing attention to the moon coming closer to planet earth and so on. Some emails are good; most aren’t. Next time you get an email forwarded to you, let the forwarder know of the following 3 basic guidelines that they can follow before they forward you anything else in the future:

Emergency babysitting, babysitters and money08.22.06

Can you get here in 10 minutes?” I heard someone say on my cell phone. I had just woken up because of the crying voices of the phone, and the first thing I heard when I answered it was someone requesting me to come over. “It’s me“, she said. I knew who it was, but her house was more than 25 miles away. “Why 10 minutes?” I asked, a question that required answering before I could ask “Why?” She said she had to go to the hospital in an emergency, and had no one to look after her kids all day. “Ok“, I replied, and thus my day began. I was told to pick up the kids from a nearby babysitter’s place as she had to leave right away and wanted to leave the kids with someone until I got to her house. I guess she wanted a free fake alternative to the real thing for her kids as soon as I got to her place.

The man who cried because he missed the very first show08.21.06

What a day it was, last week. To the guy who cried while waiting in line for “Snakes on a Plane” for hours and finding out that the theatre was full: have heart, and go back home. You came to stand in a line since morning waiting for a movie that was also playing in a hundred neighboring theatres.

Coffee at auto repair shops is a bad idea08.19.06

All auto repair shops offer free coffee to customers who’re waiting for their cars to be fixed. The coffee table in mechanic shops usually contains two types of coffee and a lot of sugar. While it may seem like a nice thing to offer to customers, coffee actually hypes up many customers, something that a business would not want to see unless that hyperness is being used to sell something to a customer that the customer is not aware of. Many auto repair shops don’t even offer water unless you ask an employee for it. I went to an auto repair facility today and saw a customer, waiting impatiently for his Dodge truck to be fixed, drinking more than 4 cups of coffee, while adding a pack of sugar to each cup. When it was time for him to pay, the bill made him yell “rip off!” repeatedly at a volume that would have put many Bose speakers to shame.

Screen all money from stores for fake bills08.18.06

You know how different stores use a marker to verify bills when you hand over a big bill to buy something? Like when you hand over a 50 dollar bill to buy a movie ticket, or a hundred dollar bill to buy an ice cream? The staff takes out a marker and puts a big line on the bill, and then holds it up against the ceiling light to clearly show you that you are not being trusted. Instead of wondering how to make them stop doing that, try doing the same thing to them.

ABC vs. T9 mode, and horror movies08.17.06

I went to Blockbuster today, trying to find a good horror flick. I text messaged Jerine to ask for some recommendations. She responded quickly as usual, letting me know a few good names. I usually type on my cell phone using the standard ABC mode, in which I have to type each word manually. While I was typing a response to her text message, a young girl in her early teens near me was also typing something on her cell phone while waiting for her parents. She typed very quickly and then put her cell phone in her pocket. I think she was typing using the T9 mode, in which the cell phone will automatically assume the words you want to type, saving you from typing a lot of key strokes.

4 random values in society that make no sense08.16.06

Do you ever wonder why certain things in the society are accepted as normal when they concern a few people or some specific situations, and why those same things do not make sense for the society when applied to someone else or a different situation? Many people do things daily that make sense to them, and they justify those senses based on the fact that majority of the society does or thinks the same thing. I present to you a list of 4 random things that make sense to most people when applied to a certain situation, but if applied to a slightly modified situation, makes absolutely no sense at all.

Spending 2 hours & getting only a business card in return08.15.06

I called the business department and asked them for some basic information. The staff over the phone told me to come down to their office around 4 pm and meet someone who could answer all my questions and give me some advice also. I went down to the place and couldn’t find any parking for more than an hour. I parked in a 30-minute parking about 30 minutes away from the business department building and had to walk over to the building, hoping to get some answers to my questions.

Businesses venturing into unrelated fields08.14.06

While businesses try to rush online to get more business, many companies are expanding their product offerings in order to rely on multiple sources of income. Google is one such company, expanding its offerings from search services to instant messengers, online email and a variety of other online services. Last week, Sawai talked about the concept of “Sticking to core specialities“, and points to some very good things. In it, Sawai talked about sticking to a basic business model and not expanding one’s products into different areas simply to be more fancy or to get more customers. Such things might backfire, and I agree. Most of what I’m saying here is deduced from a comment I left for Sawai’s original post.
