One reason behind sympathy06.27.06

Have you ever heard someone say “Oh, he/she’s cute and going through this! What a pity!” when the thing that “he/she’s” going through is some sort of a condition that is not usually understood by many people? People usually assume that a person might be suffering if he or she is going through a condition that many people in the mainstream society do not experience.

Prematurely analyzing effects of Bill Gates’ departure06.26.06

Now that Bill Gates has announced plans to work less at Microsoft after two years, blogs around the world are jumping onto the wagon to announce how Microsoft is going to change and how Microsoft is changing because of that very decision. These predictions are so far without any merit. In the case of Bill Gates leaving, no connection has so far been presented between his departure and things happening at Microsoft.

Guessing the size of food by its price06.22.06

Go to any fast food place and ask them that you want the biggest sandwich or burger they carry. Usually, they’ll say that all of their burgers and sandwiches are big, and most of the time, they’ll recommend something on the menu that’s the most expensive item they carry. In reality, many of these items are actually smaller than their cheaper counterparts. On top of that, the pictures on the menu make even a small fry look like a foot long.

Amber Alert vs. Baseball ticket sales06.21.06

I saw several Amber Alert warnings on the freeways earlier this month. The displays, just like the one pictured below, show information about the abduction of young children and about the abductor: the car that was used, age of the person, the license plate, the clothes they were wearing, etc. That same day I saw 4 displays on the 5 North freeway displaying the fresh Amber Alert.

The summer heat and dead a/c06.20.06

The summer heat in Southern California is making many people use A/C all day long. The a/c in my house was also running at full steam for about a week before it committed suicide two days ago. I don’t know exactly what happened, but the a/c simply won’t start. Now there are fans in the house that are doing their best to keep things cool. At night, the entire house cools down a bit to a more comfortable temperature. During the day, however, unless I have two fans pointing straight at me, I keep thinking of taking a shower every two hours or so.

“Guys are like that”06.19.06

Who else is sick of hearing guys say “Guys are like that?” Every time you point out to a guy that he’s a pervert, he’ll say “Guys are like that.” Every time you point out to a guy that his actions are pointless, he’ll say “Guys are like that.” Every time you point out to a guy that he’s only into sex, he’ll say “Guys are like that.” Every time you point out to a guy that he’s looking at everything on a female’s body other than her face, he’ll say “Guys are like that.” Every time you tell a guy he’s just sitting around drinking beer while the female is doing all the work, he’ll say “Guys are like that.

9 types of annoying drivers06.18.06

California freeways around Orange County tend to make people throw up. That’s a local specialty you won’t see in many other places. Everyday, I encounter different kinds of drivers. Many drivers are patient while others are the exact opposite. Some drivers drive in a fashion that makes the driving experience a good one for everyone. Other drivers, however, tend to ruin the driving experience for everyone around them.

4 trends you easily notice at different businesses06.17.06

You always see most of the businesses advertising their products in a cheerful manner. On television, you notice workers greeting customers happily. The customers themselves are shown to be overexcited, smiling and laughing along with the company staff. In reality, however, things are much different. Almost every customer is turned into another transaction regardless of any existence of happiness or respect for that customer. Many businesses refer to you by your name, which is supposed to make you feel better. However, even then, you are treated like another transaction. You are not “Mr. Joe“; you are “Mr. Joe with 2,400 dollars in his bank account.” You are not “Miss Ana“; you are “Miss Ana with 2,400 dollars in her bank account.

Advertising in radio traffic updates06.11.06

Many radio stations talk about how good their traffic updates are. These traffic updates are usually brought to you twice an hour and last around 2 minutes each. You get to listen to information about the location and severity of any accident or slowdown that lies ahead of you. However, each traffic update starts with a “This traffic update is brought to you by Ben & Jerry’s” or something similar, as if any accidents or slowdowns were caused by the sponsors for that day.

Coming up with reasons for refunds and exchanges06.08.06

I buy stuff online and in retail stores all the time. From basic stuff like bread and water to keep me alive, to stuff like gas and oil change to keep my car alive, I buy something almost everyday. Whether I buy something online or in person, the cash from my hands or my accounts disappears immediately. However, if I ever want a refund for anything, I get asked a myriad of questions as to why I would like to return an item, even if it’s for an exchange for another item in the same store.

3 random annoying things people say and do without thinking much06.07.06

I meet a lot of people everyday. I talk to a lot of people everyday too. Sometimes the people I meet are funny and interesting. Sometimes the people I meet are boring. Sometimes people are both funny and boring; that’s when one usually feels like crying. It’s the same case for me online; many people online are boring, and many people online are funny and interesting like Jess and Valerie. Many online contacts are funny, and many online contacts are worth blocking.

Here are some of the three things I notice on an almost daily basis with the people I meet in person, whether or not I know such people. I’m sure I would also do such things sometime, maybe because of midlife crisis. Regardless of that, these things are sure to annoy someone besides me when done or witnessed regularly.

Top 14 signs you are obsessed with your webcam06.06.06

I have been using my new Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX webcam for several days now. I think webcam is a very cool piece of technology, bringing us closer to a virtual world where many people will not feel the need to meet someone in person. While I do believe that real physical touch is a necessity in many cases, I still think webcams are a step in allowing the internet to bring more people closer, people who would otherwise never able to meet each other.

With more and more people buying webcams these days, a new trend of allowing a webcam to become our representation on the internet, and in our minds, is brewing. Here are the 14 top signs that you should know about in order to see if you are getting closer to your webcam more than anything else.

Earthquake myth - taking cover under door frames06.04.06

California gets a lot of earthquakes. In fact, there are several earthquakes in California almost every hour or so. Many of them are small and in desolate areas, so not many people feel them most of the time. Other earthquakes are felt regularly and daily in different areas, usually in the deserted or desert regions. One of the most common advice given to anyone living in an earthquake zone is that the best cover inside a building is under a door frame. In real life, you have more chances of being crushed under a door frame than many other parts of the house during a strong earthquake.
