Cashing checks through the Higher Standards in Bank of America01.27.05

The words “Higher Standards” in the Bank of America logo and brand have a special meaning. You can hear this phrase being repeated on TV and on the radio all the time. Higher standards are standards that raise this bank above all other banks. I used to bank with Bofa, and I still use their credit card. Many of their services and the reliability of their services are unquestionably unparalleled compared to numerous other banks. However, like other banks, they have their own set of issues that are their policies now, things they have adopted to do to cut down on costs, or to simply give many tools for conveniently performing many banking transactions without hassle, while bringing extreme and very annoying inconvenience to customers through other services and benefits that these customers and non-customers deserve for dealing with any products and financial transactions originating from this bank or customers of this bank, or from any bank for that matter.

An off-topic introduction with an old man01.26.05

Hello there.

I heard a mans’ voice behind me while I was putting things in my car. I turned around, and saw an elderly man walking up slowly towards me in my drive way. It was around noon, and I could see that he had been enjoying a walk along the street with a small radio in his hand.

New Police Story (2004) - starring Jackie Chan01.24.05

Media Type : DVD | Rating : 6.5 out of 10 | Watched on : January 22nd, 2005

Release Date : September 23rd, 2004 | New & Used DVD Price : $14 & above

Setting aside all traditional and the most recent movies he made, Jackie Chan returns to Hong Kong to make a movie named similar to his previous famous movie series “The Police Story” [which have been considered to be the greatest action movies ever by many]. Some consider this movie a sequel. However, this movie starts on its own and starts fresh with every character, and does not show any relation to the other movies. Thus, one can watch it without knowing anything about the previous movies. This movie is anything but a comedy, which has somehow become the so-called trademark of Jackie in the recent years in America and abroad. The movie does have a small sense of humor. However, the movie actually shows more violence than probably all of Jackie Chan’s recent movies in America combined, even though the violence is not extreme. This movie brings Jackie back to what originally set him to be a star; quality action movies with very good stories. The following paragraphs offer a little bit more in depth account of the movie. If you do not like to know the details of movies before you watch them, you should skip the next paragraph and go straight to 3rd paragraph and read onward from there.

Ulead VideoStudio & normal pictures in Berkeley01.24.05

I have been working on a small movie and editing it through Ulead VideoStudio 8. For some reason, the final output has no audio; it is getting “lost” somewhere along the way. Since the software’s GUI is supposed to aim at a “beginner”, one has to try to play with all the options like a “beginner” in order to see where the audio is being muted along the editing. For now, I took a single snapshot from the entire video, and it will somehow have to stand on its own until the video is fixed.

The moral choices in paying a citation01.21.05

After going online to pay a parking ticket I got earlier, I noticed that the police officer who had the courage [and maybe anti-sleeping pills] to be awake around 3 am and give me a parking ticket had not only written down no VIN/Serial number of my car on the citation, he/she had also written down the incorrect license plate # [one letter was wrong] and the wrong color of the car.

I asked a number of people about it, to see whether I should just ignore it or I should be a good metropolitan and pay the ticket. All the boys I asked told me to keep the $20, party like it’s 1979 and throw a huge party [buy hot dogs from a department store and get water from the tap for everyone with such a huge amount of money?]. All the girls I asked told me to pay the ticket, to be on the safe side and thus have inner peace. That leaves no doubt in what the correct thing to do would be, right?

A parking ticket for parking your car01.20.05

The current budget situation in California is slowly creeping into our lives deeper. Now, the effect is visible in many smaller areas in the system which weren’t affected that much before, or at all, by the decrease in funding for school and local city projects, including development in many densely populated cities. There is visible increasing in imposing fees and fines for various “facilities” on the residents. In the city where I currently live, there is a law that parking in areas where there is a board stating that there must be no car parked in areas within the visible distance of the signs. This law had not been practiced for over 10 years.

Getty Museum Photo Collection - January 14th, 200501.19.05

I went to the Getty Museum last week. Here is a collection of some of the images. Since the Museum requires that in most of the galleries either no pictures be taken, or that no flash be used, some of the pictures in the collection appear to be “fuzzy.” This is the defect in all the Minolta Dimage Xg models so far; if there is not sufficient light visible to the sensors and the flash isn’t used, the picture may come out as if it was taken while running.

Spam and snail mail on their way to unification01.13.05

Pennysaver is the only mail many would consider a blessing when it comes to dealing with mail that comes uninvited [aka, junk mail]. In fact, a good part of California looks forward to getting the Pennysaver. Not only does this short magazine/catalogue type booklet come for free, it also comes with useful information on things you would like to buy and sell in your specific area. I recently read an entry over at Kissui.net, and it shows the way with which the advertisors in Japan currently target their audience. This is an open area that spammers and advertisers in America have yet to wander into. Junk mail in America, snail junk mail that is, has advanced from credit card offers to more “advanced” offers such as life insurance [insurance companies want my wife, kids and my grand children to be happy after I am gone..] from Kaiser Permanente and newspaper subscription offers. Something that I have noticed myself since December of last year is that these direct advertisers [not the ones listed above], are using another tactic to lure people in; combining the snail mail with the Internet to target you more. One now gets emails with the same information as ones home mail. “I’ve been getting junk mail for ages now; what’s new here?” you ask. The difference is that these emails now contain your home number and your address, listed out, telling you that you submitted this information on a certain date to a company that shared the information with others [others meaning advertisers]. Which “company” is it that you submitted the information to? In most cases, it is your phone company.

Our concern for the victims of the Tsunami Crisis01.08.05

While we in California wander around in our cars, hiding from the rain, people in the recent Tsunami affected areas are still without the necessary food, shelter and protection from further damage and harm. This even is not something we have to put behind us; this is something we have to put in front of us. We cannot try to ignore this and “move on with our lives”; we cannot move on. This is not a situation where the strategy of putting the situation behind us to return to normal and build stronger lives than before will work; we have to fix this first, then we can think up of any strategy. Our own people are dying everyday in the Tsunami affected area, even as I type this, and even as you, the reader, reads this.

Southern California & the pouring rain01.08.05

It has been pouring in Southern California, with only a few hours break [sometimes a few minutes break] from the rain in some areas. I personally wish it rained everywhere constantly; however, it is clear that the weather Goddess does not agree with me. Many places are buried under the snow right now, while other places come under the blessing and sometimes the wrath of this white substance called snow, which comes and goes away at its own will, usually coming more often than leaving. Even Las Vegas was saw its share of the snow.

Tsunami Disaster01.06.05

Now that I have access to a computer [I just returned from a 3 week trip, about an hour ago], I would like to invite everyone to come together and make a donation of any kind, any amount, and in any manner, to the recent TSUNAMI disaster victims. More information on the Tsunamis is at the Tsunami blog at Blogpost. Following is one of the ways to make a donation at Amazon. 100% of the donation from the link below will go straight to the organization which will receive the donation.
