I recommend you drink Pepsi, while I drink Coke12.28.03

Try calling Sprint PCS service to “see which day the contract ends”, using the exact phrases in the quotes. If you get the answer “Yes, let me check that, and I am sorry you are having this issue, and I will try my best to solve this issue and try to make your experience with us better” is not necessary since you are only asking for the date, not dinner or a thrill ride coupon.

The manager over at my local Cingular wireless services told me the best way to solve the problem of changing my number [instead of porting it], was to call the 200+ contacts and leave a message. If that was not genius enough, him using a Sprint service himself really amazed me. I am sure Sprint is jealous because they do not have such talented people.

Canned customer support12.27.03

I have been observing customer support responses from several different companies through several different mediums. It seems that everyone has a “canned” response now, and cannot think before they start typing, speaking or replying.

A customer support “specialist” should be given the necessary answers to address the customers needs. The language of communication, which refers to the way the answer is presented, should be left up to the support person. If there are “templates” to speed up things, then the templates should be made for human beings, not machines.

The history web site, The Lord of the Rings, actors on the loose, and Amazon12.23.03

I have finished building an educational History web site from scratch, completely rewriting it in php from its html “table-ladened” ancestor. I could have used that time to upgrade my own sites. However, my sites can wait. It is time to put the History project to the real test by testing the site live.

Junk mail, & transferring domain names12.21.03

CapitalOne really wants my business. I have received so many offers from them, each with better APR than the previous one, and each with a better design offering than before.

Shopping for cars & Amazon.com visitor stats12.20.03

Car prices have went up a bit because of the holiday season. If you are looking for a new or a used car, you should wait till the end of the second week of January to make your decision. Prices tend to go down a little bit at that time.

Tip of the day : Remember to ask the seller if they can have the car smog checked at your expense. If they cannot, something might be wrong with the car itself.

The count below is valid as of around 11:50 pm PST.

Shipping via UPS, and tracking other carriers12.17.03

I had a guitar packed today via UPS, which I was then supposed to ship via USPS. Interestingly, the packaging was more than 10 inches in area than the required total area size accepted at USPS, bringing the total shipping price to more than $70. Using the same box for shipping via UPS, the shipping was $50. That is a job well done UPS. I wonder how big their packaging would be if they had been told in the start that the shipment would be done through them.

The packaging was two boxes cut from the bottom and taped together, with peanuts put inside. The tape was transparent. I am sure this costs a lot to UPS, however, they must have passed the savings onto me.

Google now includes tracking for USPS and FedEx; simply enter the tracking number into google. You can track more carriers through iShip also, which tracks 5 different carriers as of today.

Updated Amazon.com Holiday Shoppers meter12.16.03

At around 11:26 pm, PST time, it seems that the number of holiday shoppers to the shopping giant decreased significantly. It may show that the majority of the shoppers for the giant, more than 50%, way more, are from within the US. If you do not know how that is possible, please know that most of the people in America sleep at nights. You can also see the number of pop-ups blocked so far, I did not exclude that on purpose since someone has been asking to see my browser bar for sometime. Someone might be surprised.

Redesign, and slashing prices affect Toys R Us12.14.03

Today was the day of redesign. I have redesigned some of the sites [not this one, apparently] to be converted to fully CSS-based prototypes for their applications.

Wal-Mart has been slashing prices so much, that Toys-R-Us and Amazon have been affected indirectly.
